Hidden problems of hero bans

Hero bans have some bad side effects that don’t seem to be considered:

  1. Earlier and more extreme counterswapping.

E.g. if the enemy bans Ana (in low ranks), you know that their tank will likely play Hog / Mauga or whatever. Instead of rolling out on a hero that you want to play, you can easily just pick counters to ruin the tanks day by counterpicking straight out of spawn.

Why wouldn’t you go Orisa, Bastion, Soj, Zen and idk, Juno/Bap/Kiri from the very start and make it even more difficult for the enemy to get at least a little bit of progress before the counterswapping?

  1. Not so oppressive heroes suddenly become really oppressive

E.g. I’m talking primarily about heroes like Dva, who under normal circumstances aren’t extremely oppressive, but then turn out to be way too strong the moment Sym / Zarya are banned.

Sure, there are still options to shut the Dva down, but it’s way more limited, especially when your teammates don’t have these heroes in their hero pool (more bans = less chance at least one person can counter)

  1. Rank manipulation / lack of interest to play ranked

E.g. people going afk if their hero is banned but also players either not queueing for a role anymore / purposefully losing to stay in a rank where their main isn’t banned as much.

  1. Based on 3): “Smurfing”

I’m not talking about otps deranking because their hero is banned here (I doubt they derank that much). I’m talking about players who keep their rank low so they can play their favourite hero more often (since he’s banned in high ranks every game) , even if their skill level is way higher.

Just look at Sojourn: in low ranks, most people wouldn’t even consider banning her, but in high ranks she’s almost always banned. Why would you not just not try at all some games to stay in like plat where Soj isn’t banned

  1. Lack of adaptation

If you can ban a hero you struggle against every game, why would you bother learning to adapt to one if that hero isn’t banned? It takes away a crucial skill that you need to have in every game: being able to adapt to any enemy and your teammates to coordinate. This isn’t necessarily that bad of a problem, but still something to keep in mind.

Not to mention that this can boost you to a rank you don’t deserve because your overall skills are still lacking in some aspect that kept you in your previous rank. Which leads to even more stomps if you come across such a boosted player.

  1. Demotivating flexing

There are a lot of people who occasionally flex to other roles, but don’t have a massive hero pool on those roles. With hero bans, it’s likely that one of their most played heroes on that role gets banned, which leads to them being flamed and overall demotivates them from playing said role again.

This is especially problematic when said players would offrole to tank (role which needs players the most) as this removes potential tank players from the tank queue. Longer queue times incoming.

  1. Teammates banning your preferred hero.

It should be pretty obvious that this leads to even more toxicity and tilting than there already is. And guess what? It makes people play worse because they can’t play the hero they want.

Those aren’t even hidden, every single one of them is obvious and was brought up in here ad nauseam since the announcement that it would happen.

I’m actually getting with a lawyer about a class action suit for anyone who has purchased a cosmetic item. Not letting you use it is technically refusal of goods paid for. Not sure if there is a case but it was neat to be randomly contacted by a lawyer lol.

Yes, hero bans is imo among the THE very worst changes ever made to OW

Hero Bans are terrible, Sombra doom and Zarya always seem to be banned, as a zarya main whos good at most other tanks I just find them boring, while zarya is fun. out of about 50 games of tank only 4 games zarya wasn’t banned, so i’ve just given up on tank until they get rid of bans and can actually play the heroes I enjoy. The bans only benefit the bad players who can’t counter or don’t know how to play against certain characters. or the 1 tricks who want to ban their counters, it’s lame

i would LOVE to see what lawyer would even take up such a ludicrous case. nothing is stopping u from using the skin because u can simply play quick play or arcade. no one would take up this case lmfao unless ur paying them enough that they dont care if its a loss

This is a advantage of hero bans, lesser played heroes can be played more freely.

If they’re going afk because the hero they prefrerred got banned, theyre throwong the game.

If they’re in a tank because of one hero then they werent that tank anyway.

Sp only 3 point’s not 4.

This happens without Hero Bans.

Because theres more to adapt to than one herp in a game.

Thats a great joke.

So the devs know thay something needs to be done about the heroes? So its a positive thing overall

had a game where they banned sombra doom and ball.
my best widow gane so far. :blue_heart:
Thats how she must feel when she’s called lobby admin. absolutely amazing.

  1. Earlier and more extreme counterswapping.

Each team gets two bans. If they spend one on Ana and then don’t spend one on a tank like Orisa, that’s their own fault. Besides which, I think a team showing their hand with their bans is a fair enough trade, considering the ability to remove characters from the pool.

And of course, there’s always the possibility that the enemy team does something unexpected. People are unpredictable. Maybe it’s the supports that want a game without Ana and not the tank. Who knows.

  1. Not so oppressive heroes suddenly become really oppressive

Then people need to choose their bans carefully. They also need to look around for other answers than “they picked rock, swap to paper”.

In my plat 6v6 games so far, the characters that reliably get banned are Sombra, followed closely by Zarya. I always make sure to stick Widow as my number one ban vote on any map with daft sightlines because as far as I’m concerned, Widow is awful enough even with a Sombra around to annoy her. If my teammates don’t follow suit then they deserve what they get.

Same goes for D.Va. If D.Va runs riot, then people are going to have to either spend a ban on her or find other solutions than Zarya.

So I don’t see it as a problem and it’s certainly not hidden. Remove four characters without considering the consequences and it might very well backfire. That’s surely how it has to be.

  1. and 4. Rank manipulation / lack of interest to play ranked/ smurfing

Unfortunately, jerks are just a fact of life. We shouldn’t lose out on stuff because of nose-pickers and empathically stunted losers, though.

  1. Lack of adaptation

No hero, not even Sombra, has a 100% ban rate. Also, let’s think about point number two here. What do players have to do against D.Va if they can’t insta-swap to Zarya? Adapt.

Lol nothing needs to be done against those heroes, people just need to get good, I happily play zen against sombra because I trust my skills despite sombra hard countering me. its just giving low skilled players an excuse to be bad and now Dva and Ana are too OP. I watch most of the people who cry about those heroes just have bad positioning and poor aim. The heroes themselves are average or even weak. Zarya is easily countered with Range or High damage, but people continue to play as squishies right up in her face, then cry about how OP she is when they inevitably die to her. Sombra has had a 100% ban rate in all the games I’ve played this season, I’d hate to be a sombra main, Doom and Zarya I would guess about 90% or higher

Well, erm, actshually she does have a 100% ban rate in my lobbies.

Oh I’m sorry am I the one making posts talking about getting a lawyer and saying that only comp is fun?

If you’re so scared of specific characters even when they are played by low skilled players, then its’s definitely a you problem and you should be going to QP

She’s slipped through a couple of times in my games. What’s funny, though, is that I suspect that the non-Sombra players in those lobbies will make sure that they don’t make the same mistake twice…

this is such a good week ngl

Why do you decide who, how and where to play? Maybe someone likes to play at a low level and not strain themselves. That’s what rank is for, so that anyone can play with equal players.

Why do you decide who I play by banning characters??
