This is wrong. First of all, when an artist makes a fan concept, Blizzard doesn’t usually make the exact model of that concept. They change it. Just because a fan concept is popular, doesn’t mean the company won’t make the concept real. Look at Riot games for example. Some very popular and highly-fanart-ed skins have made it to their game with no problems. Or in Blizzard’s case: Heroes of the Storm has made many fan skins real (e.g. Death knight Mei)
Still i don’t understand why Blizz doesn’t make Skin Contest like… every company?
Blizzard did it sometimes. Well, not for Overwatch. But for HoTS for example. They made a skin contest during 2016 and Janitor Leoric made it to the game during 2018 Blizzcon.
So i think it’s time for Overwatch?
I hope they make one for Overwatch some time. So many fan concepts out there and not many of them made it to the game.
y’all forgot about Aviator Pharah, which pretty much looks 1:1 like fanart of some person.
Will O wisp tracer? This was heavily requested and drawn
that’s patenting, not copyright, if you make a creative work you automatically have legal rights to distribute and use it, patenting is ideas, copyright is for creative works. Although I have no doubt that blizzard has a clause in their ToS saying they have legal rights to any and all fanart and reserve the right to take it down.
Blizzard can’t use fan art for skins because they cannot guarantee that the fan hasn’t ripped off someone else’s work. Suppose they had a fan art contest, and the winner’s skin is made into the game. A year later, the real artist pops up and claims the winner stole her art.
That’s why there wasn’t a skin from the Blizzard SEA fan art contest awhile back. The winner was crowned, but we don’t get one of their great designs as a skin because of too much potential legal liability.
I could see that making sense, but then why do companies like Square Enix and Hi-Rez do them then? I mean, I’ve seen plagiarism issues show up occasionally in contests but it always seems to be settled quickly and fairly easily.
When there’s a really good fan art skin you want from a real artist, the risk is mitigated if you contact them for the rights. It’s just a matter if the risk is worth it.
I’m just gonna say this straight up - those companies are better at communicating with their playerbase. Community involvement and the feeling of inclusivity is a drive behind these companies as it builds the bond (especially since they do essentially release games for free).
The issue with Blizzard is that there is very little of a bond tbh.
EXCUSE ME???
no babe. You cant ban people hobbys and jobs just because you want to.
i bet you didnt know lot of fanart is bought by this companies and they make it official.
Someone telling others to not create art…
That doesn’t sit well with me. I understand what you are saying but for a lot of people art is a big part of their life.
I can’t draw but if I was told to stop writing Fan fiction, poetry, or poi for copyright reasons I’d tell them off.
I’m not forcing anyone to stop? Where did I say that?
I said, if people want these skins so badly, they will need to make some sacrifices because it makes the legality of these skins have a very questionable suspense about them.
Make fanart if you want, I don’t really care. But I’m just tired of hearing demands as to why this hero didn’t get that skin, or this skin when there are quite logical explanations that are ignored.
Sure, companies buy the art and make them into officials or cut a deal with the artist, but in the four years that OW has been out, I can count on one hand how many have been fan requested (and I mean heavily fan requested).
Where did I say that they must stop and drop all their life passions of making art? lmfao
They don’t have to, but if they really want these skins as badly as they say, then they’re going to actually have to take some action (or lack of action) to increase the chances.
Pretty much in your first sentence of your post. If someone loves making fan art you have no place to tell them to stop just because you hope they make the skins themselves in blizzard.
The more art the better. Blizzard should change not the other way around. Why not advocate what’s right?
The more art the better and it shouldn’t be limited.
I partly agree with this but it shouldn’t stop people from making fan art skins.
We all know Blizzard won’t use hero skin ideas from fans though. Sadly they are to much of stuck up snobs to do that.
Look at what SE did for FFXIV. It’s pretty awesome.

I can’t ever see Blizzard doing something like this.
I don’t care about what skins they make, I’m pretty much always happy.
This was specifically directed at the people that constantly get upset because things like lifeguard mercy, speedo hog and etc HAVENT made it into the game.
Again, I’m not telling anyone to drop their passions. But to be reasonable with not only themselves but the reality.
Also, I’m sorry to say this, but if a thread like this makes you want to drop your passion or you feel so deeply offended, then I think it’s bed-time because no one should really be this concerned about what another person online says lmfao
I will check it out when I get off work, I’m just at work waiting for my energy drink to kick in for the rest of the night atm lol
