Hero mastery going away

Yeah I guess probably no one is playing these (it’s funny I actually played them for the first time in like a year the other day) but not sure why they have to retire single player content. I mean I guess it probably costs something to host it and also makes the game bigger, but still a bit of a shame.

The courses are pretty decent honestly I recommend at least trying to get 5 stars on some of your mains before they go

So instead of just leaving what’s there already

Or making it so you can play them while you queue

They’re just deleting them LMAO

I’ve been patiently waiting for more cources, i’ve 4 starred every single one when they came out, i guess i’ll just try to get to some 5 stars now…

It’s sad to see them go…

Them deleting the mode is so damn cheap. Like “we’re sunsetting the mode because no one plays it”… ITS CAUSE YOU NEVER PRODUCED ANY NEW HERO COURSES??? Like WHAT? Another terrible decision

Making new ones doesn’t get people to play the old ones.

Be it a better solution would just making it so you can load these locally, and not have it tied to whatever server is running.

I will legit miss it, both normal and Gauntlet were so cool to play.

I feel like that would require a lot of work that wouldn’t be worth it for just this mode. Custom games would be a more sensible local play mode to work on.

Makes sense. They lock themselves more in with character changes with this mode. They can’t completely change a hero without also changing their mastery map, and vice versa. It was never going to work.

Can’t say I’m surprised. Tried it a few times and found it utterly boring

It’s pretty disappointing, but the writing was on the wall when they released Ashe’s as a single Hero Mastery course instead of their usual 2 heroes. Not to mention Aaron recently saying that they were working on streamlining the game’s modes, hinting that there were too many options. I’m confident that the only reason they haven’t gotten rid of the Story Missions is because people paid money for them.

That last Hero Mastery course featuring Ashe also struck a nerve with me, as it’s the only event in Overwatch history that was only a week long. I wasn’t playing much at the time and went to participate during what I was expecting to be the event’s second week, and it was already over. It’s the only event I didn’t get the weapon charm from.

Either way, I’m glad they gave us a full season’s head’s up instead of the 4 or 5 week notice when they were scrapping Hero Mastery: Gauntlet (which also had Lifetime challenges). I’ll be sure to finish 5-starring everything to get all of the remaining cosmetics I haven’t collected yet.

feel like writing was on wall when PVE was cancelled as it was kind of an offshoot of it…just glad i managed to finish all the ones that came out.

It was the Hero Gauntlet, now Hero Mastery met the same fate.

Hero gauntlet I get because the queues would’ve been dead dead in a few months I don’t get why they didn’t just turn it into a seasonal event

RIP hero mastery, but probably for the best :frowning:

imo they shouldn’t have applied so many hero changes for hero mastery. for example, the health regen passive messed with tracer’s recall objective, where she needed to be low hp to regain a certain amount of health.

they also made some arbitrary changes without ever explaining why:

  • Mei Veteran - removed 10 seconds from the timebank, making it one of the hardest courses to 5 star (good luck if you’re still going for this)
  • Lucio Agent - increasing Sound Barrier requirement from 5 to 10, which meant you needed to use Ult two times in a run instead of just once (there’s only one Ult pack in that course)

and probably a bunch of other minor things that caused the leaderboards to be a mess, making some scores unbeatable.

there was also a bug that allowed players to carry over points after resetting the course, allowing for higher scores than normally possible. idk if it’s still doable though.

missed opportunity to not be able to play hero mastery while queueing other game modes

Good. This was so pointless. Tried it like once or twice and got immediately bored of it. Clearly they’ve got no idea what to do with it either, given how few of them are there.

Honestly, I’m glad they are going away.

Those were some of the most pointless things they added. I am one that never bothered with them beyond the first couple that launched.

What they need to work on are better versions of the VS Ai modes. Right now Lethal is anything but. You might have the rare game where you get a combo of teammates and bots that roll your team pretty well, but most of the time its a snooze. But it needs updates:

  • Allow for hero stacking. Its sucks when a new hero drops and you can’t all play that new hero at the same time for example. Hell the bots tend to stack the same hero sometimes, why can’t the players??
  • Try to update the Ai pathing, especially on newer maps. Make them more random and more likely to split up sometimes and take angles.
  • Update their targeting: Prioritization and coordination when attacking targets. Let them remember players that did well the previous fight, things like that.

Obviously we all would like to see more PVE content, but we know that’s a nearly dry well. Still its worth asking for. I mean the mission section is still there, we just need more missions to do. It might not be as active but I’m sure it gets some play still.

I mean, they distributed 2 heroes per season when they were actively being worked on, and the team behind them were likely part of the PvE team that was let go in January 2024. Considering they still had enough to keep distributing them throughout all of 2024 shows they were well ahead of schedule and could possibly pump out more at a faster rate if demanded, but the demand wasn’t high enough to warrant increasing their pace.

Edit to add: They’d eventually catch up to the full roster, putting 4 out for every 1 hero added. Players today just have no patience.

Talking about dead game modes that should be sunset… I’d rather they keep the solo Hero Mastery courses that don’t need queue times than the “advanced training room” vs AI mode. At least with Hero Mastery courses, there was some skill involved with interesting time attack challenges and adequate rewards.

hate to break it to you but them removing this doesn’t magically make some other part of the game better

If they are designed to be played solo, why do they need servers to work? It makes no sense; the single-player parts of the game should work directly on the player’s device.

This is why the Stop Killing Games initiative exists.
