Due to the (lack of) attention that threads on new Hero concepts tends to receive, I have decided to create…

THE HERO CONCEPT LAB!!

In short, the Hero Concept Lab is a central location for new Hero concepts with three main purposes:

  1. Allow those who have created detailed new Hero concepts to share them and garner attention (and constructive feedback)
  2. Allow those who wish to develop a new Hero (and have some concepts) to come to a place with people who can help develop it into a detailed Hero concept that can be subsequently shared and thus garner attention (and more constructive feedback)
  3. In case it is not clear from the prior points, allow people to provide constructive feedback for the Hero concepts included to help improve them further

Feel free to include them in whatever format, as long as at least some basic info is included on the forums (so we can get a basic idea of the Hero; additional info can be provided by a link to a page), as well as some info on whether help is required with developing the concept (and if so, any areas in particular).

Anyway, enjoy the topic!

I’d like to submit one of my own designs:

I’ve thinking about an anti-air / anti-flanker defense hero for a while. Here´s my take on it.

Hope you like it. As always, feedback is more than welcome!

Hero: Sicario (Omnic)
Role: Defense
Sub Role: Anti-Air / Anti-Flanker
Occupation: Bounty Hunter / Assassin
Base of Operations: Italian Omnium in Turin
Affiliation: The Eye (refer to Sombra’s trailer)

Playstyle: Sicario’s playstyle is very straight forward. He’s a backliner. With his Net-Shot he can make short work of airborne characters like the PharMercy combo, D.Va, a jumping Winston or a Jumping Genji. His holoprojector ability opens up the opportunity to ambush enemy heroes.

Look and Feel: Very slim, fully clothed omnic, dressed in the archetypical bounty hunter style (long trenchcoat, hood, and the like). Very plain featureless face. Uses a crossbow as a main weapon. Main threat to flankers is his net-shot.

Abilities:

LMB - Composite Crossbow (Exploding Bolts) / Damage: 90 HP linear projectile. 1.5 shots x sec (No AOE damage, but has a very slight knockback)

RMB - Scoped Crossbow / Medium range scope / Damage: 90 HP hitscan. 1 shot x sec (No AOE damage, but has a very slight knockback). More precise than LMB, but slower fire rate

Shift - Decoy Holoprojector / Holoprojector that creates a decoy (copy of self). Moves in 5 meter radius. Behaves like regular A.I. Shots primary weapon, but doesn’t do damage. Takes damage. Health gets reduced to 1 HP, but can’t be killed. / 1st click to deploy. 2nd click to activate for 20 seconds. Damage to Decoy does not generate Ult for enemies; but generates Ult charge for Sicario.

E - Net Shot / Replace regular bolt with a net shot (similar to Hanzo Scatter Arrow) / Use LMB to fire a net that wraps around and traps the first target it hits and pins them to ground for 3 seconds. Can’t use abilities until effect is off. If target is airborne, it falls for the duration. / As soon as it is shot, net moves forward and travels at a speed of Reinhardt’s FireStrike. Deployed Net has the size of Symmetra’s Phothon Shield. 15 second cooldown.

Ultimate - Smoke Bomb / Throws a smoke bomb into a designated area. Enemies cannot auto target or wallhack your teammates in the area. Enemy has reduced visibility and to them your teammates look like blurry shadows. Blocks beneficial effects that require line of sight. / 10 Meter Radius. Cancels the effect of Sombra’s wallhack, Hanzo’s Sonic Arrow, Widow’s Ult, Solier’s Ult, McCeee’s Ult, Torb’s Turret autoaim, Symmetra’s gun and turret autoaim. Also cancels Mercy’s beams, and Zen’s Orb of Harmony.

Yeah, I’ve been monitoring that discussion (made this WELL before knowing about that, so I wasn’t trying to divide the base). I may join sometime in the future.

I really like that net shot (although maybe not such a large AoE; otherwise may seem a bit overpowered)! It would be effective for handling anti-air, and maybe even some flankers. Smoke Bomb also seems fairly interesting.

I love the shift idea! There’s a lot of different takes on this sort of ability concept, but this is probably the best iteration of it I’ve seen so far. I love that it doesn’t fall below 1 hp, and will actually charge your own ultimate, instead of the enemy’s.

The net ability sounds annoying as hell though, tbh, like an instantaneous Mei freeze from across the map with a hitbox the size of Moira’s orbs. Maybe if the netted person can still use abilities, but just can’t move or use movement abilities for the duration (except Wraith Form, Fade, and maybe Fortify). Or maybe the net acts as a barrier that the enemy team & the netted foe can shoot to break free from.

And yeah, I wasn’t aware of this forum when making the server either. It just seemed like none of these sorts of things ever get much momentum, and quickly die in this Blizz format. Figured if we had a notification system on a different platform, we might be able to give these sorts of threads the attention they deserve.

I know it’s annoying. Maybe a longer cooldown could be better? The idea is for this to be a HARD counter to flying heroes. It’s still moves slow enough that it can be dodged. It’s basically a “skill shot” with less skill than Ana’s sleepdart, of course

This is my dream utility support:

Name: Indigo

Class: Support

Hit-points: 175 (150 shields)

Primary weapon - particle accelerator: fires an accurate beam of light every 1.5 seconds

Secondary fire: can charge up a shot of concentrated light that strikes and arcs between enemies

Ability 1- Attainment: Indigo locks onto an ally, allowing her to use her additional abilities on them without having to be facing them (lock on is removed if regular line of sight is obstructed)

Ability 2 - Protective Membrane: Indigo applies a 50 point decaying shield to her locked on target, this ability has a 1 second cooldown and cannot exceed 50 points. If indigo has no ally locked on, she instead applies the membrane to herself at 50% the magnitude.

Ability 3 - Safeguard: Indigo applies a much stronger membrane around her currently locked on ally, this membrane mitigates the allies received damage by 25% for 2 seconds and removes all CC effects (10 second Cooldown). If indigo has no locked on ally, she applies it to herself, granting instead a 10% damage mitigation and a 2 second speed boost.

Ultimate - Intercession: Indigo applies a field of matter around her currently locked on ally that absorbs all damage directed at them for 5 seconds. at the end of the ultimate, all damage received is converted into a decaying shield for the target. If indigo has no ally currently locked on, she instead applies it to herself, granting a field of effect that grants herself and all allies who stay inside its radius a constantly regenerating 100-point shield and a minor speed boost.

Passive - Unity: 25% of the ult charged generated by Indigo’s actions is shared with her currently locked on ally.

Interesting idea. Which keys would each ability be bound to (for example, does the Particle Accelerator/Particle Reflector (to call it something) need to be reloaded; if not, could be used as one of the ability keys)? It is interesting having the lock-on and apply different protective skills (plus, another non-healing support for diversity!). Unity would also be helpful for charging up certain other Ultimates (for example, helping Zarya get Graviton Surge faster to do earlier combos).

Yeah, it would certainly be handy in lower tiers for those who lack the accuracy to combat Pharahs.

Occupation: Paramedic - Search & Rescue K-9 unit

Playstyle: Lifeline and Waffle are a healing/damage reduction combo. Waffle has auras like Lucio. He can stay near Lifeline, or can be sent to assist teammates like Zenyatta’s Orb of Harmony

Look and Feel: Picture Mutt & Junkyard from G.I. Joe and the classic cop and dog buddy.

Abilities:

LMB - Two handed Shotgun (DP12 Pump Action Double Barrel) / Damage: 80 HP, Fallof 7-20 mts, 8 rounds. 2x sec -pump- 1 sec reload.

RMB - Chewing Toy / Waffle bites an enemy rooting him in place and dealing small amount of damage. Can be targeted on enemies in melee range of Waffle. / Damage: 30 HP, 15 mts range, 1.2 second cast, 3 second root. Targeting system like Zenyatta’s Discord Orb.

Shift - K-9 Protection / Waffle passively buffs all allies in line of sight, in a short radius. Activating K-9 Protection switches between a healing aura and a damage reduction aura / Healing Aura: 25 hps, 8 meter radius / Damage Reduction Aura: 30% Damage reduction, 8 meter radius. (Ideally, you’d activate healing when you know your team will be getting sustained damage, and you’d switch to damage reduction when you feel burst damage is coming your way). This is the only healing ability

E - Deploy Waffle / Waffle runs to targeted ally and stays with him, providing K-9 Protection, as long as Lifeline maintains line of sight. If line of sight is lost, Waffle returns to Lifeline. Waffle can be recalled to Lifeline’s side. To assist players that might be out of reach (no path available) or are up in the Air, Pharra or D.Va for example, Waffle can reach and follow them with a convenient jetpack (don’t hate please, I know a bird would work better, but I love the dog).

Ultimate - Inspiring Howl / Wafflle Howls and teammates in range get immunity to stuns and silences, and removes debuffs. Effect lasts for 6 seconds, 20 mts radius (counter to Graviton, Blizzard, EMP, Ana anti heal)

Passive - Too cute to shoot! / Waffle is Invulnerable. If Lifeline dies, Waffle runs to his body and stays by his side until respawn or rez. K-9 Protection doesn’t work if Lifeline is dead.

He has 200 hp.
Moves at 6m/s

Wields a painball gun
Fires 3 shots per second
Has 15 shots
Deals 45 damage per paintball
Balls move at 25m/s
Effective range of 45m before they arc downwards.
Reload speed of 1.25 seconds

His Left-Shift fires a Burst-on contact PaintBall that makes the wall/floor bouncy. It looks bright blue to his teammatss and bright red to his enemies.

It launches people 10m into the air
Has a 8 second CD
His E fires a Ball of paint that explodes mid air after traveling 10m and has a burst radius of 5m, or on contact.
Pressing and holding E grants a targeting reticle to allow the player to see where the paint will land.

The paint is black with hints of Blue for friendlies and Red for enemies. Enemies inside the black puddle are slowed down by 25%. Enemies caught inside the paint blast have their vision restricted and have their speed reduced to 50% for 3 seconds. It doesn’t deal damage however

The puddle is a 2m wide square and lasts for 5 seconds.

It has a cooldown of 10 seconds.

His Ultimate overloads his paint gun to fire 1 clip of black paint balls, with the same stats as the normal black paint. It also deals 100 damage shots
Reloading early removes his ultimate.

Edit this char was orginally female but we don’t have enough male supports.

Defense-oriented off-tank specializing in Area Denial, defending choke points, defending teammates/assisting in retreats, and providing support over a wide area. Particularly useful in rescuing supports or other backline heroes from flankers or other dangers, and rescuing teammates:

Originally built to assist in keeping the peace during anti-Omnic rallies by the Italian “Arma dei Carabinieri” in the wake of increased Omnic terrorist attacks, the “Carabinieri Assistente di Prontezza di Battaglia Operativa” robot (C.A.P.B.R.O.; pronounced “Capro”) was originally equipped with riot shields for protection, tear gas canisters and a pulse-wave cannon for crowd dispersion, and emergency medical pods to assist injured persons.

Talon began stealing service-robots and re-programming them to create a false-narrative in popular media that “even good robots can turn evil”, so as to generate an even greater divide between human and Omnic, fuel even more anti-Omnic prejudice and legislation, and subsequently encourage ostracized Omnics to turn against humans, further sowing the seeds for war. One stolen C.A.P.B.R.O. was given to Sombra for reprogramming, which eventually became one of her pet-projects. She replaced some key parts and worked with others to create an almost entirely new robot. Now dubbed the “Combat Operative Battle-Readiness Assistant”, or “C.O.B.R.A.”, the newly-sentient robot was filled with images of human aggression and oppression towards Omnics. Now filled with his own prejudices towards mankind, C.O.B.R.A. joined Talon as a means of getting revenge on mankind, but ultimately seeks to one day destroy the humans in charge of Talon as well.

Abilities/stats starts here

200 HP, 300 Armor

LMB/M1 - Pulse cannon - 7 rounds, can fire 1 round per .7 seconds - A highly modified version of a pulse wave that was meant to harmlessly shove groups of people back, the pulse wave was modified into a concentrated beam of light. Hitscan and deals 50 damage (No headshots) in a straight line that can go through targets (Does not pass through barriers, but deals double damage to them) to hit multiple targets simultaneously.

RMB/M2 - Tear Bomb - 3 rounds, 16 second cooldown - Fires a canister in a parabolic arch that does 5 damage on impact, but once it hits the ground releases a cloud of gas that obscures vision and deals 50 damage over 3 seconds. Effects do not stack, but for each 1.5 second exposed to the gas (From a separate canister than the original effective canister), target takes on an additional 25 damage. Because it’s tear gas, targets are capable of having their health returned to them without the aid of a healer or medkit after being free from the effects for a minimum of 3 seconds. Tear Bomb is not capable of reducing a hero’s health below 1.

E - Defense Stations - Switches between one of three canisters (stations), and places them on the ground (Or wall/ceiling) by pressing “Fire”. Has an AoE of 8 meters, and effects of the same type of canisters do not stack with one another (If their AoE overlaps (Pulse Canister), they synchronize so they work at exactly the same time as one another). Canisters have 50 HP and have no time limit; must be broken, or replaced. Up to three can be placed at a time. Effects are as follows:
Canister 1 - Pulse - Every 3-5 seconds the Pulse canister will send out a shockwave, staggering (Does not stun) enemies, so as to mess up their aim
Canister 2 - Sabotage - Enemy cooldowns are increased by 2.5 seconds
Canister 3 - Oppress - Decrease enemy movement speed by 10%, jump heights (Including Pharah’s jetpack, D.Va’s thrusters, Genji, etc.) are decreased by 25%, burst speed boosts (Swift Strike, Blink, Reinhardt’s charge, D.Va’s Thrusters, etc) reduced 25%

Shift - Power Shield - Targets allies only - Rushes to targeted ally (+100% speed for the duration of the rush, in a manner similar to Mercy’s ‘Guardian Angel’ (Different in that C.O.B.R.A. remains grounded at all times, unless going over a cliff)), and puts them self between the ally and the nearest enemy within line of sight. Once in place, faces towards the nearest LoS enemy and uses a barrier projector contained in his palms to create a 500 HP barrier for 5 seconds. Power Shield also comes with actual riot shields to block melee attacks, and enemies from passing through. This includes Reinhardt’s melee as well as Genji’s Swift Strike, etc.

While Power Shield is up, C.O.B.R.A. is able to fire at the enemy with the LMB, and drop Tear Gas Canisters directly to his feet with the RMB. Though Power Shield automatically detects and directs the player towards the nearest enemy, the crosshair of the weapon should not automatically target the enemy, so as to avoid abuse of auto-aim.

Q - Sky Drone - C.O.B.R.A. releases from its back a fairly-large, helicopter drone for up to 20-30 seconds. During this time, the player switches from controlling C.O.B.R.A. to controlling the Sky Drone (Much like how Junkrat controls his tire). The drone has 150 armor, 50 HP, and can fly in three dimensions (WASD are used normally, spacebar to ascend, Shift to descend). The drone moves at speed equal to normal walking speed, +20% and has to pick up speed as it moves. The drone has two modes of fire: Primary fire is a maximum of 200 rounds, 15 damage per round firing at a rate similar to Bastion’s turret mode with, but it’s recoil is closer to Soldier’s primary fire (No reloading available) Alternate fire is 15 rounds, fires 3 rounds per trigger pull, and fires 3 rockets (Like Pharah’s Rockets) that each deal 75 damage with a maximum of 30 splash damage, also with no possibility for a reload. The AoE beneath the drone, in a conal shape (Meaning the AoE grows the further in the air the drone is) has one of the Defense Station effects, selected entirely at random.

Neat idea. Glad you included Too Cute to Shoot (otherwise, it would feel awful having to hurt Waffle :dog:). Inspiring Howl also looks handy for crowd control, and it is an interesting concept having most of the power not directly contained in the main Hero of the duo.

Seems interesting. Considered giving this Hero some brush-based abilities (you know, laying down a trail or just flailing it around; this is inspired by some of the weapons from Splatoon)? I’m guessing this guy is support due to the ability to sabotage enemies (and limited ally support)? Also, have you considered adjusting his standard paint to give allies a speed boost alongside the enemy sabotage?

Good bit of lore behind C.O.B.R.A. (and I know a few guys on the forums want a Talon tank and/or villainous Omnics, so good job creating a 2-in-1). As for abilities, seems like an interesting combination of abilities, and Power Shield sounds like a handy protective ability. Not sure about the Sky Drone ability though. Some suggestions are:

  • Have it so E adjusts the canister effect
  • Lshift projects a frontal barrier onto an ally within range (so it is a short distance in front of them; not sure whether it would be channelled or just a set-and-forget)
    Good to have another tank Hero though!

Overall, it is really nice to see this thread getting such a diverse range of Hero concepts! Great job to those who have submitted thus far (Pachanga, AzshFayd, Doc, and Synaptic)!

Quick question before I try to post any, can the character be like a character who is known in the lore but isn’t in game or do they need to be 100% fanmade? Asking because the main one I have ready for sharing is my take on Lynx 17 xD

I mainly specialise in looking at brand-new Heroes (but am not completely restricted to it). Still feel free to post your idea here, however I may not be able to provide advice on abilities due to there already being lore surrounding Lynx.

Then I’ll post Lynx first and check through my notes because I’ve got more character ideas somewhere in my phone that are brand new :joy: . I tried to base it all around the lore we already know with him being a hacker.

Name: Lynx 17 (Zarya’ s Comic)

Character Class: Support (Not direct healer, a Support for your supports and a Hacker)

Main Weapon: A pair of machine pistols like Sombras but smaller and a clip size of 15 shoots small hard light bullets that cause 15 damage per bullet (?)

General Abilities:

Ally Hack- This is to use on your Healing Support allies basically it boosts their healing output for a short amount of time. Like what Sombra does to healthpacks but like on your healers. It could also have special effects on the healers to like maybe it cuts down rez cast time just a little, puts and even scarier oof to Zens discord, makes sleep dart last longer ya know? 10 second cool down 6 second effect time.

Boost chip- Attach it to an ally and it for a very short amount of time increases the ult charge they generate not by to much but enough that it’s worth using. 20 second cooldown , caps at maybe 10 to 15% gained charge (?)

Shock Field- A small net field you toss down basically it temporarily stun (1 second maybe?) the enemy giving very minimal damage maybe 5 to 10 damage to both him and the enemy it’s to be used more so as an escape tatic than a attack tatic but it can be used as either. It also does punish you with that damage to yourself if used wrong.

Passive: Repair- Small self healing over time maybe 10 hp per second?

Ultimate Ability: Meltdown- temporary of course nerf to opponents damage output obviously not to much of a nerf but enough to put the fight in your teams favor like any ult should. Maybe the effect lasts 6 seconds as well?

And as a secondary idea possibly “Reset” - We’ve all accidentally wasted an ult before but with reset let’s say your friendly Zen panic ulted because he overestimated how much damage would be incoming . What this does is let’s Lynx give his ult charge to the poor Zen who panic ulted so that we can use Trans again quicker if it’s clear we need it maybe he has to wait a few seconds before he can pop trans kinda like a short cool down timer like maybe 5 seconds? It would take longer to build up maybe close to the time it takes Zarya to get Grav

Play style: He’s really meant to basically pocket and protect healers , most put that job on the tanks but his role is to just protect healers and battle it out with flankers. He has 150 hp (plus 50 shields) , he can try to play more aggressively but he does best in keeping your supports from getting picked by those pesky flankers.

Waah! Oh my gosh, this is a wonderful thread. I agree that we should have a fan content thread! I don’t have the time tonight to get into all of these but had to pop in and cheer.
