All these arguments; role q, balancing, everything. It all comes down to one central and fundamental problem with Overwatch:
We can’t play who we want to play. Thats it.
I’m a dps main (surprise) and sure, while playing tanks and support have lower queue times, I prefer to play dps. Because that’s what I like to play. 222 has made it easier to play who we want, but we have to sacrifice queue times for it. What we could do is incentivise people to play other roles, but it doesn’t solve the fundamental flaw. If my favourite hero is Tracer, and I want to play Tracer, I’m queuing as a dps. That’s it. Thats who I want to play, so that’s what I have to do.
“Play Classic then!” I will, and I do. In my experience, it’s become a 6v6 dps deathmatch with an objective somewhere. I lose a lot and my team comp is terrible buuuuuuutttt at least I’m playing Tracer!
But lets say I want to play regular QP. I queue for 10 mins, lock in Tracer, get told to switch (or get flamed otherwise) and then I play someone else or risk being a toxic teammate.
Here’s the next problem. The other contributor to this is the meta. Before I mained dps I was a Dva one trick. I don’t find any of the other tanks fun or interesting, so I don’t like playing them as much. This is probably the main reason why I haven’t done my tank placements yet. I’ll be told to switch to Orisa or Sigma or Hog, and sure I can do it, but now I’m not enjoying the game.
People complain about balance because their mains aren’t meta, or their mains are hard countered by the meta and they have to play/learn something else. Yes Overwatch is a game about being flexible, but it’s way more fun when you get to play who you want. The less restrictive a meta is, the more fun people will have.
TLDR: Giving DPS incentives to play tank/support won’t work, and this meta is too restrictive to be fun for a lot of the playerbase.
