Helping a friend out of silver - should I start a new account for that?

I’ve been stuck in gold for a while though I’ve been up to 2900 at one point. I’m teetering around 2300 now (console) by solo queuing.
My friend got Overwatch a couple months ago and I’m playing competitive with him. He’s around 1700. Im wondering if my rating is bringing the overall average up, so we face people who are generally better than the average of the team? When we play together, we get a 50% win rate usually, unless we land teammates who communicate. The 2 of us are usually the only people talking or coordinating.
Would it be better to start a new account with a fresh SR to climb with him?

If you want the forum people to stay happy or neutral state with you the answer is no because “ITS SMURFING/BOOSTING” or whatever they want to say. Reality says yes since the games are probably easier when you’re at his level and there wont be any punishment for it since blizzard authorizes 3 accounts. And even if there were some other factors that make you place his level you wont be punished for them either. Just look at all the forum post of people complaining about these things and then complaining about them not getting punished unless it’s something like abusive chat or harrassment.

A 2300 really is not any better than a 2000, and you’ll be put in 2000 games if you keep duoing with him. That’s why you have a 50% winrate. You guys are close enough in skill that neither of you are going to carry or hold the other back for now. So no, a new account will not help unless you place it bronze intentionally and play in low games.

I definitely don’t feel like I’m boosting since the range of player skill I face is roughly similar to my teams. So hopefully nobody sees it as that… I see silver players who are stomping all over everybody (maybe smurfs) and sometimes I stomp all over them. I’m honestly just trying to get my friend into gold+ so more people communicate.
Especially on console, the lower ranks are just silence. Even if we lose games, its way more fun when we can talk and try to communicate.

I wouldn’t buy a new account for that. Chances are your friend (or you) can identify what’s keeping them at that rank (poor positioning, mechanics, etc) and proactively work on it. Before long you’ll both be gold making the same climb to plat.

Since you are only one rank above him, it is really hard to help him to climb. But if you and him can play zarya rein combo, you guys might able to do it, it is the best duo climbing heros right now.

If you want to help your friend out of silver, play with as much mediocrity as you can get by with and still win to avoid smurfs on the other team.

You said you are on console. Don’t worry about it, just play.

There is a 100% chance of smurfs in your games anyway on console. SR is a complete meaningless mess below Diamond.

It really is lmao. But if you manage to get low enough you’ll regain more controll and reduce randomness

Yup, I’ve played comp games with diamonds and GMs on their smurfs.

Suffice to say that in a majority of such games we got some “special” team mates that made the games still tough to win.

If your Mmr is too high, you’ll get team mates with low Mmr to balance out the teams.

I think that it is great that you are going to be playing OW with a friend.
Nothing makes the game more fun than playing with people whom you get along with like friends and family (mind the inevitable bickering over a loss, though. remember that it is just a game =)

To answer your question about starting a new account to get your friend out of Silver tier, i offer 2 schools of thought:

First School of Thought - No, do not start a new account.

Instead, play with your friend in QP and Arcade and point out to him what he can do to improve. Maybe even sometimes just spectate and point certain things out to him via Discord or in game chat as the game progresses.

The advantages of this is that you save some money and your friend learns in an organic manner, improve independently and develop his unique play style with and without you as a duo-partner.
It also helps to avoid the potential hassle of people hurling insults and accusations of you “smurfing” and sparing your buddy the tag of being “boosted”.

Second School of Thought - Yes, start a new account.

Playing together with your friend in QP to level 25 should be quicker and along the way, you and him will develop more synergy.
You also can use characters which are not in your normal rotation so things could be more fun as you learn new characters. This, of course, will only benefit your game play in the long run.
Playing together as a duo, with the right team work and right character picks, the 2 of you are less prone to random comps and players.

Negatives would be all the possible accompanying insults and accusations.

In the long run, your friend and you may develop too much of an interdependence to function effectively outside of one another.

Both schools have their pros and cons and i leave it to you and your buddy to have a chat about it.

End of the day, dude, just have fun and don’t let the Tier thing get to you both too much. To me, the tiers are just brackets which helps me find games so that i can have fun and don’t get wrecked.

Game on =)

First off. Stop. This idea of helping your friend out of a rank is not the correct thinking or idea. Sure, you could help him get out of the rank and he will collect more CP. But once you are no longer there to hold his hand, he will slowly just fall back down or stagnate.

Why? Because if he cannot climb or carry on his own, then he won’t budge. If he only plays supports, then he is making a big mistake by depending on low elo teams. Even if you placed him in Diamond, unless he plays like a high tier support, he won’t survive in that elo and will get his team killed and/or picked off.

No matter how you look at it. If he cannot climb no matter how hard he tries, then he is not ready for higher tiers.

Tell him to non stop play QP and carry the games. If he keeps on doing this, he will start fighting harder and harder opponets of higher tiers. QP has MMR just like SR in Rank. If he gets to the point where he is fighting Diamonds+ and then eventually feels comfortable in that environment… then he will be ready for comp.

^ Thats how you get better without a coach. Always learn from your mistakes too. Learn, listen, watch.

Some players do better at higher ELO than low. I can play Orisa pretty good in gold as people use my barrier, follow up halts and heal me.

In silver was a nightmare as healing and dps poor and had Leeroy Jenkins running in front if barriers every game. I had to drop her and play more mobile self sustain heroes to climb.

Well… The truth is… Some players play specific heroes better at higher tiers. But not really.

The only thing a player can bring with him to a Master’s game is Game sense, Map awareness, and Hit scan tracking.

But the mechanics, skirmishing combat survival, proper ability usage, and hero positioning is something you do not just automatically “get” just because you are at a higher Tier. These are things that are learned over time.

In other words. I may play like a Master Hammond, but I will always be a Silver/Gold Lucio because I hardly play him. I may understand him fully, but I do not have the mechanical skills of a Master Lucio player.

So unless his friend plays his specific hero like a Diamond+ , he won’t climb at all and will just fall fall fall.

This is why One tricking is not a bad idea. It not only teaches you a lot overall, but gets you a foot in the doorway while you learn other heroes and master them.

But unless his friend is planning on climbing at Diamond+, he must master multiple heroes. Not be “good” with them. He needs to Master them.

Sure, just saying that expectations of what team mates can do can adversely impact you at lower ELO.

I’ve won games at 2500 as I got solid heals and dps follow up. I’ve lost games at 1300 playing same hero as team not using my barrier, healing me or finishing off what I damage.

If I’m ever low ELO again I’m just going to instalock Bastion and dps my way to gold.
