Hello! [copied and pasted both pathping and tracert txt files below]
A problem has been occuring, on and off, since the Baptiste update, at least it didn’t occur before (correlation/causation).
My friends and myself have all been experiencing it, and today broke the camels back. I would normally just submit a ticket for this, however I cannot. Every time I have tried today, it has timed out my connection, even though everything else is fine.
Am on ethernet.
Yesterday my connection was normal, at 70ms latency, with 20ms IND
Today, both before, and after resetting my PC and router, my connection has been no less than 120ms latency, with an IND no less than 90ms.
Occasionally the IND will drop to 20ms, with a corresponding spike in latency up to 1,000ms.
Please help!
This has happened before, and persists for days, at times.
I don’t suspect OW to be at fault here, though it did not start happening until after the Baptiste patch, so there may be an issue somewhere in the network on their end?
Not a tech wiz, just looking for help in solving this problem.
Thank you.

I will update this post tomorrow ( It is almost 11pm currently), when I get back from work and have the opportunity to run it. Especially if the problem re appears.
I would appreciate some input/feedback regarding the trace route in the meantime, if that is possible.
I don’t work for Blizzard and there’s no way to get alerts for new posts.
Traceroutes only show one connection attempt, so they don’t provide a lot of info, which is why I recommended the WinMTR. When you run the WinMTR you get a more full view of your connection over 10+ minutes, making it easier to spot problems.
I understand that you don’t, and thank you for what responses you’ve posted. I also understand about WinMTR, and the difference between it, and a trace route.
But if you’d be willing, lets discuss the actual contents of the trace route? Or what happened with the Ping?
It appears to look like there is at least a 200ms spike between hop 5 and 6, and again a few more times down the line at hops 8 and 9.
Now, hops 8 and 9 i don’t know anything about, but I do know that ALTER.NET is a Blizzard network hop. as far as Blizzard claims. And, from what I can tell about trace routes (what a few searches about them tell me) this data is pointing to a BIG spike in response time as soon as I try to connect to ALTER.NET.
Am I understanding that correctly?
This is just a brief post before my coffee and commute.
No, because many Blizzard hops are configured to respond slowly, or not at all, which inflates both the ping response time and sometimes packet loss value. This is a protection mechanism against DDoS attacks. I don’t know if Alter.net is owned by Blizzard; I have not seen it mentioned before in my last year of reading posts, so I don’t personally have any information about it.
Well, the intent behind the delay ought not to reflect upon its impact.
And I read through articles on this forum for information about what networks are under blizzards domain or not. I am not a tech wiz, so maybe I misunderstood.
To clarify, ALTER.NET is part of the Verzion network. There’s some info on that here. If we look up the IP 204.148.11.177 on a site like https://www.iplocation.net/, we’ll also see that its part of the Verizon network.
The first IP that we’re seeing a spike on (10.31.8.1) is a private IP. If you have a separate router\modem then this would be the modem. If its a combo, then this would be the first hop into the ISP’s network. Generally you won’t see our hops appear that early in the test unless you’re hardwired into the servers.
From what we can tell though with the spikes starting so early on, this is likely going to be a routing issue through the Verizon network.
Sweet! Will be bookmarking those links, and calling verizon, Thank you!
Update : Minor victory??

I see that as per subscription, you are getting good speeds and there is no issue with the Verizon network.

I literally lost connection mid speed test, on verizons own website

can I attach the trace route?

I understand your concern, however there is no issue from our end.

I can copy and paste the file

Please disconnect all the devices connected to the router and connect only one device and check the speed test

Only person here, only one computer

Just to confirm, are you using a PC Wired directly to the modem?

Thats a traceroute to a test server for an online game I play, in which, my connection is relatively stable, until saturday

YES

Is the Internet slow on all websites?

No

Its just fine

unless im using verizons troubleshooter, in which case both internet explorer and chrome ask me to close the tab, since it stops responding

Is it happening only with one particular gaming website?

Nope

I also contacted that game company, and sent them my trace route, pathping, and WINMRT files

to verify

before contacting verizon

I thought it was their end at first too

Alright, May I know the website?

What does that matter?

ALTER.NET is verizon, thats public knowledge

So that I can check this with my network team to check the root cause of the issue

I sent you the trace route, showing that theres a massive lag spike, as soon as I connect to it

its your server ALTER.NET

reset it

its Blizzard, by the way

Please allow me a moment while I check with my network team.

Thanks for your patience, I’m still checking on that for you.

Thank you for being online.

I see that there is a server issue which is why you are experiencing that issue.

Thank you for saying that, for a second I thought I was hallucinating, or my computer had developed a personality and it hated me

I will create a ticket so that our backend team will contact you within 24 to 48 hours.

ok!
