Isn’t Winston a hard counter to Genji? It’s time to switch to Reaper right?
Before I see Genji defenders say that they do well against Winston, I would like to say you’ve played against poor Winstons. A good Winston OWNS Genji.

a genji can keep away from a winston if they choose to, sure it’s a hindrance if you don’t have anything at all to deal with a winston in your team.
but the thing with genji is that he can follow up on a winston that has low hp and is trying to escape a situation.
but other than that i really don’t see the point in picking genji myself tbh.
Winston soft counters Genji. Winston is only a threat to Genji if he can keep Genji within 9 meters (the range of his gun). It requires quite a bit of positioning for the Genji to stay out of that range but still be able to pelt Winston, but it’s not impossible.
People play games to have fun and Genji is fun for a lot of people, so they play him regardless of counters.
I see it too often that Genji likes to dare Winston’s abilities. Rather than play for a win they would rather try to play through their counter?
Some Genjii are in their own fantasy land trying to beat their counters. Selfish play.
Are you in plat? Because plat Genjis think dying to Winston every fight is going to win them that sweet POTG.
i mean there’s a lot of genjis just playing genji no matter what, but still there’s things in the game that can let genji still be used.
let’s spin it like this, your team has genji and a reaper vs this winston, the whole situation becomes much more complex to discern the outcome of the fights.
because now you have counter on a counter, and we can also add in something like a counter to reaper, the whole scenario is a complex battlefield of strategy at this point.
I agree with you. I don’t mind as long as I see a Reaper in the comp versus Winston. In 2-2-2 Reaper, Genji is acceptable.
Not Genji, Mcree
Not Genji, Tracer
Not Genji, Widow or Hanzo
When I see a Winston we need Winston control. Heroes like Bastion might work if the team supports him.
Meh, Winston is a softer counter than other options. Genji’s mobility lets him play keep away, and having a Winston chase him around leaves the team at a 5v5 that benefits Genji.
2 tanks, 1 dps, 2 healers > 1 tank, 2 dps, 2 healers.
This.
This harps back to the day where there were counters, but you could out play. Unlike the hard counters we have today where it’s like, “well I guess I have to switch”.
honestly all you might need is a good brig, just boop him away every single time he leaps and when he gets shut out he can’t contribute to the fight because he has no leap to get in in time.
i think if you’re gonna be that serious in games you probably want a more specified team composition that has a certain plan or strategy to it.
just picking counters to counter is not allways the call, sometimes it’s just a bad situation and people were just not good enough and got caught out.
like people can still run dive and everyone picks the right dive characters, but if no one knows how to run dive, there’s no point to that strategy and it will simply not work.
but as the game is revolved around strangers trying to cooperate, they have to come up with a gameplan that simply works for that specific comp they end up with everytime more or less, and that’s what Overwatch is for the most part.
a bunch of random strangers trying to make their weird comp work.
There’s only like three of those. A lot of Hard Counters aren’t actually hard counters, they’re just harder to deal with than the WInston Genji matchup.
It’s obviously an unbalanced matchup. But the professionals never hesitated running Gengi into Monkey, and they made it work.
I’m not an avid Gengi player, but I would guess it’s just about avoiding the Monkey. Winston really shouldn’t be just sitting in his own backline, he’s a naturally very aggressive hero. A lot of the time he’ll be absent from his healers, and this gives Gengi opportunities to attack them without Winston harassing him.
If Monkey targets the Gengi specifically then he’ll almost always be able to kill him, or at least ensure that Gengi can’t do anything exept evade. But towards the higher tiers and in professional play you really don’t want your main tank tunnel visioning on one target like that.
That’s 3 too many, not even knowing which ones you are referring to. OW used to be a mix of counter picks and skill match ups, but the way the OW dev team has taken it it’s just pick meta vs meta and stream roll or lose. It’s terrible.
I’m referring to 2 that have been in the game since the start and two recent additions; Winston vs Bastion/Reaper and Wrecking Ball vs Mei/Sombra
Uh, Bastion has had the clear counter play that he has to pick a position and can’t move to do that.
After that, Wrecking ball is a fairly new hero so “since the start” … not even sure what you are getting at.
but now he can only counter it if theres not a mercy behind him.
tesla weapon does nothing to a pocketed genji.
And? Winston cannot attack a Bastion Sentry. He is guaranteed to lose. That’s a Hard Counter.
Notice how I said “two recent additions.”
… That was always the case?
