Help at aiming?

After 100+ hours spent in this game I still can not manage to aim consistently ;

At first my sensitivity felt too high ( used to play with default and 1600 dpi ), after doing researches on google I saw a lot of people suggesting low sensitivity over it so I decided to give it a try and sticked with it for the most of my playtime hours…I eventually got used to it but it felt too slow to track my opponents or do quick 180s or even flicks.

So I’d like to know…does anyone have any tips about finding your own sensitivity or simply about how to manage to aim better ?
I don’t want tips such as “play symmetra” , I’d like to improve at heroes which require some aim ( I mainly play genji but I love playing Widow and Hanzo as well in QP and I just feel like while I do okay at them I am not great at any of these three, barely managing to reach respectively 30% , 50% and 30% accuracy…thing which…after so many hours…sucks ) .
Does anyone also have tips about projectile vs hitscan differences ? I know a little of the basics but the more I can get to understand the better.

I’m one of probably the few who think it’s mostly untrainable – you can either aim or you can’t. There are some slight things that will change your ability to aim, but ultimately, it comes down to your innate hand-eye.

Random Q, but do Grandmaster DPS exist on console? I’ve seen about five and they’ve all been hardcore Mercy mains with 98%+ of their playtime on her.

I main Mercy in comp cause none of you people wants to heal, mate.

It’s not like I wouldn’t love to dps as well but considering that people in silver pick 4-5 dps a team…uuugh…I don’t know…

My suggestion would be to practice a lot in deathmatch. My aim isn’t the best but it has improved a lot as I’ve been playing heroes I’m not usually comfortable with in Deathmatch. I’ll do something like pick McCree and refrain from using fan the hammer so I can get used to getting the headshot after flashbang. Or pick Tracer and practice landing most of her clip as headshots.

Also, some people are more comfortable with projectiles over hitscan/hitscan over projectiles. Projectiles require that you can do some predicting of the enemies movements and lead your shots where as hitscan requires you to track where your target is at.

I have 800+ hours in the game and my aim is still pretty mediocre. It’s really all about having a consistent practicing routine. I have Aim Hero that I use to help build muscle memory, in game I do practice range first to warm up a bit and then play FFA DM, that’s also where I figured out what sens I wanted.

Im not good either with aiming.
On thing i do know is that its almost impossible to track ur opponent.
So, try aim where u think he/she will going. In that case u need half the reflexes of tracking.

Man, I have 50+ hours on Genji in QP , 20+ as Hanzo and 15+ on Widow.

The reason why I played Mercy during this season was that no one wanted to heal.
The fact that I pick her in comp doesn’t mean that I can not use other heroes, it means that I am less selfish than those 4 other players who instalock dps and do not switch even if you pray them cause you need a healer or a tank instead.
I can play the whole next season on any dps hero if you prefer and derank to bronze cause of 5-6 dps teams…that won’t make me be a better player.

No matter the sensitivity I have it at, it always takes a while to get used to in the beginning.
Personally I like extremely high sensitivity and DPI. I don’t want to drag my entire mouse around for some movement.

I do think that having a button on the mouse that, when you press it it goes to a lower sensitivity temporarily, is very useful for sniper precision. But other than that, just have sensitivity as high as you can deal with and what you find useful to play with.

As for training aim… just pick up a hitscan hero and main them for a while. McCree or Soldier would be best IMO. Tracer is extremely hard as you need to get up close and she is very, VERY ability-centric.
But McCree and Soldier are kind of cookie-cutter hitscan heroes that anyone can learn to play.

And it takes a while to learn good aim. Don’t expect to be good at it after a couple days.

Aiming with projectiles requires leading them.
Means you need to predict where the enemy is, and then shoot there. Which requires some mental math/intuition to know the direction of the enemy, as well as distance, and speed of your projectile, and then shoot there where you’re likely to hit the enemy.
Leading aim with projectiles is harder than just hitscan, especially if your aim is off to start with.

When you can aim right with hitscan, then you can train for projectiles more easily.
At least that’s my experience.

Sticking to the original post, yeah keep your sensitivity fairly low but high enough so you can do at least 1 360 turn with your general mouse space. Next, and this is crucial, leave it there for awhile. You are retraining everything you have learned and it will take a bit of time.

Finally I would suggest sticking to hitscan heroes like Soldier, McCree, and Tracer until you feel you have a solid skill base and then move to the projectile heroes that require prediction and aim.

Also important to note at your skill level game sense means way more than pure mechanical skill.

Muscle memory man, it’s a thing. People who are bad at aiming have been practicing the wrong habits for too long. It can be trained into anyone. Reaction time factors in a bit when you get to insane tracking, but up to GM it’s trainable.

OP - pick up AimHero and spend 30 minutes a day, everyday, training your flicks and tracking. Use it as a warmup tool as well. Being consistent and practicing the right habits are what will reap you the most benefits.

Hey Elyann

This is a long response but i hope this can help you.
First i’m not GM or Master but hopefully next season i might be one. I climbed from Low bronze to Plat almost Diamond but you know the ending season its kinda hard. So here are my tips on how you can improve your aim like i did.

1- like you i played a lot of Mercy in Comp but that wasn’t working i’m not saying you should stop playing Mercy no she’s a great Healer but if you wanna improve your aim time to switch to some dps and put it in work .

2- Find your sens : Hum when it comes to sens everyone is different you need to build your muscle memory but i would suggest you to start with a dpi within 400-800 personally i use a 800 dpi and 4.5 sens . So to find your sens go into the training area and start with a low dpi 800 and 5 in sens if that’s either too fast or slow adjust it you must be able to do a 180 fast and be able to track your target once you find your sens believe me its going to take time and once you find it Don’t Change IT even if you are playing bad or doing mistakes its not your sens.

3-Record your games if you can and re-watch them this can help you to find your mistakes and say " okay here i died when i should not i won’t do it again " . This also help with your positioning ( for all heroes ) .

4- Aim : okay so when it comes to aim i can recommend you Aim hero to start with and don’t play against AI Bot if you want to warm up that won’t help you at all because you will be used to their moves and know how to kill them with ease . Before playing OW what you can do play Aim Hero for 30 -15 min a per day will help you ( that is what i usually do  ) And go into Quick play and play a lot of matches you know Practices makes perfect believe me i farmed QP a lot with Heroes like Tracer soldier to get better . As well i watched a lot Pro players/Top 500 game plays this might help you as well. if you like Hanzo, widow , genji or other dps hitscan heroes look at videos were you can find players like Wraxu , Dafran , Calvin , Effect etc… or other top 500 players / GM

5- Take breaks and stay positive
Mate if you want to climb the ranks trust me you going to meet a lot of players ( throwers , Toxic etc…) try to stay as much positive and don’t listen if someone of your same ranks says to you , you are bad nope because you both have the same rank means you should have at least the same level of skills.

6- Motivation
You want to get out of silver fine work hard , practice a lot stay positive and stay motivated if you believe you don’t belong to silver and your place is in Master Or GM for example then you can get there . Keep your Good habits for your warm up before comps don’t change your sens .

Hope this will help you ( sorry if i made some mistakes English isn’t my native language but i’d try ) Good luck

The biggest thing I learned was to aim with your entire arm, if that makes sense. Not just your wrist, otherwise you’re limiting yourself. Make sure you have a big mousepad and a big enough area to aim. I say this because I showed my friends (Two who are GMs and one who is Master) how I have my mouse and they told me that it is working against me because of how small of an area I have to move my mouse around, plus the size of the mousepad.

Bonus, my Corsair is broken so the DPI shoots up to max speed randomly.
