From the very inception of the game. Healers were designed wrong. All healers should have been and should be dps heros in every way except they have ultimates that heal, mitigate or res.
It makes balancing issue easier, makes game play more balanced.
Now we have this nightmare scenario of tons of healers (a lot that dont play fps games except heal overwatch) who dont have the mechanical skill for 5v5.
They should have been primarily utility heroes with small amounts of healing on the side, not primarily healing.
I love primary healers we have in the game and I disagree supports were designed wrong. It is a very diverse class and there’s a bit of everything there. We have more healing focused heroes and supports who also focus on DPSing a lot whilst providing strong utility.
Yeah heal design is a bit off. It has the biggest influence in the game by existence, but has little impact practically(coz too ez) and an adverse effect(high team dependencies).
It should not have been so ez, cheap and spammable as in MMORPG.
Well, if there wasn’t a role queue then they could add supports that do other stuff that isn’t healing, but as we have role queue that’s never going to happen
That’s how it was when OW was released. You only had 4 support heroes: Mercy, Lucio, Zen and Sym. Mercy at the time had 50hps until a short while later they increased it to 60hps.
A simple fix IMO could just be to nerf healing across the board, bar maybe Zen and Lucio. Then the focus would be on utility, not healing.
Funnily enough they should have trended them toward Sym instead of removing her from support altogether…
I disagree with healing/utility being tied to their ult but I do think that healing was made too important for supports kits, this is naturally mercy’s fault considering she was the one true healer on release and the rest of the first couldn’t compete with her output
That said, player agency has a lot to do with how supports are being played, for example, when I play mercy i use her pistol a LOT and I’m always being yelled at for doing so, other players simply want supports to be healbots and it’s up to the support players to show them why that’s not the case
Their design could be tweaked to be more damage oriented but truth be told, supports do a lot of damage already and giving them more would honestly break them
If i wanted to DPS i would choose a DPS hero, but i main tank/support, when i play support i want heal and use utility i want to do very little DPS unless i have to (self defense)
Yeah, and a more thorough fix would be to buff individual survivability for all characters and no sustain cheap healing imo.
Healing as an expensive and strong(no need to be so strong like ult when the individual survivability is buffed accordingly) utility that could save the teammates.
That’ll lower the amount of healing and the dependence of healing significantly, while supps who have healing utility could have higher impact on the game by healing. They could also have enough time(and kits hopefully) dealing with flankers in OW2 cause you don’t need to babycare all the time.
That’s your prerogative and we simply fundamentally disagree about what supports should do, i think it’s ok to have your play style around though but ultimately ow is an fps first and forcing all support players to play like you has been a mistake, devs have realized this and thus now you’re having a harder time keeping up on ow2
Achieving a balance is ideal of course but to me, they should focus moving supports out of the healbot/enabler play style, just my opinion
Rich for you people to demand that one of the roles from one of the worlds most popular games is “designed wrong”
50million sales don’t lie. We need to just mass revert the game
I wouldn’t blame mercy even though the release supports couldn’t beat her output she wasn’t actually used that much especially in higher ranks despite having mass Res.
I would actually blame ana whose base healing could beat mercy’s 60hps but also had a burst on cool down that for a while double all healing outputs before being nerfed to 50% extra
Everyone loves to bash healing/healers until they get clapped by the enemy.
Then it’s all: “wHeRe ArE mUh HeALz??!?!?!?!??!111??!?!”
We can have both, i have no problem with DPS supports but there shoukd also be healers with utility too that way all playstyles can be viable
I agree with being ok about having both playstyles, believe me, I really do but when the community prefers to be paired with one over the other then we have an issue
think about it, your playstyle allows people to make mistakes freely while mine allows me (and my team) to draw value out of someone else’s mistakes, mine is statistically more effective and wins more games (refer to ml7 video about the role of supports in ow) but yours is loved because people die less
so, at first I wouldn’t force you to play like me but when people tries to force me to play like you, then I have no other choice but to clap back at you for enabling that kind of behavior
they gave us moira & brig but y’all hated them
I have said this before and I will say it again.
Overwatch is a terrible, terrible introduction to video games especially for the FPS genre.
If you watch the forums closely you can tell who never played video games before and still have very strong albeit bad opinions on how the game should be designed.
I feel like all supports other than mercy and brig fit the new 5v5 design very well. Supports finally have a wider skill gap. In my games I’ve been able to heal and get more elims than everybody else in team fights. But yeah, it would honestly be healthier if every character was tuned to be in the line of zen and Lucio. They deal a lot of damage and utility without providing much heals.
