This is a hard truth for everyone. It’s completely impossible for something new to topple something as well-established as Overwatch no matter how good it is. They’ll form their own playerbase, but many people will not take the risk of jumping to a completely new game vs a game that has been critically acclaimed in the past. That’s the tragic truth. Too many people know about Overwatch without paying attention to its flaws like the community does. This game will always have a strong playerbase. Overwatch 1’s critical success made sure of that.
The only, and I mean ONLY thing that can ‘kill’ Overwatch at this point are the people making it.
Competition and rivalry is good, it drives change, blizzard has rested on it’s laurels for too long, that’s not to say that the game will kill overwatch (nothing, but Dev hubris will) but put pressure on the only thing blizz care about (bottom line) and it will drive change more than any boycott will.
A debatle example of this can be seen with FF14 and WoW.
WoW for years has been the king of MMORPG’s however alot of changes where made over the years leading people to start growing more upset with WOW.
Then 2-4ish years ago, FF14 supassed WoW in player count. It was ground breaking.
Due to that alot of disscussions started apearing comparing the two.
And while i have little proof of this next part, I think that all that talk and comparison did something to the devs, because the next expansion Dragon Flight had alot more care put into it then previous expansions (at least IMO)
If always good to have rivals and competitions between games, it forces the devs to try and better.
On a side note, that is why I think Minecraft has been “failing” these past few years, it doesnt really have a good competitor, as such it seems like the devs are complacent (once again IMO)
The thing with MMOs is that they demand so much time investment that once a player becomes established it is hard to move on to another one, I played wow found it boring and repetitive and moved on to ESO, that game blows wow out of the water in my opinion (but that is because I like story and freedom)
It’s a bit different with shooter games because they are a dime a dozen and unless you are into comp and want to reach the big leagues overwatch does not require that time investment so it is much easier to move on from.
These new games would be so much more successful then they already are if there words “Overwatch” and them weren’t put in the same sentence.
Helldiverse 2 and overwatch should never be put in the same sentence.
Palworld for whatever reason and overwatch never in the same sentence.
The finals and overwatch?
Hell even Marvel Rivals.
These games are completely irrelevant and none essential to the existence of overwatch that it’s an insult to them to think you have to compare them to something just to give them a leg up, yes overwatch is high quality weather we admit it or not even if its just for nostalgia reasons.
But if yall want a game to become popular don’t mention and especially don’t compare it to an already popular IP, because unless you basically create a brand new all new never before seen never heard of gaming experince, you’ll make your game just constantly look like its trying to be and play catch up to something better.
And at that point just play the already established better thing.
Overwatch can stop existing tomorrow and if your game can stand on its own that’s all that matters.
Look how much CoD brings in. Yall expecting too much from a F2P.
Call of Duty has significantly contributed to Microsoft’s financial growth following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In the third quarter of fiscal year 2024, Xbox content and services revenue surged by 62% compared to the previous year, largely due to the inclusion of Activision Blizzard’s games, including Call of Duty. This increase helped boost Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue by 51% during the same period. The success of Call of Duty and other titles from Activision Blizzard has played a crucial role in Microsoft’s strong financial performance, which saw total revenue reaching $61.9 billion for the quarter.
Nah. It is possible. The current competition is just not good enough except maybe for Valve (their game doesn’t look good but it probably won’t launch in a bad state anyway)
