I feel like it’s really difficult to climb as a healer main. For the record, I main Moira, Lucio and Baptiste. This season has been particularly tough due to the Moira nerfs, but even before, I found it supremely difficult to climb. I made it to 3200 but am back down to 2500. My frustration comes from having gold heals every game and still sinking because of losses out of my control.
I wish Blizzard would take this into account in the ranking process. I’m doing my job as the healer. And out of the two healers, I’m doing the better job. Theoretically, shouldn’t my SR remain flat if we lose?
META hasnt been determined yet, Id stay away from comp till that chaos subsides.
Pro tip . you can have 4000 more healing than the other healer, but if you stop healing the tank or the carry on the final push in over time you’re responsible for the team’s loss.
This sounds a lot like you are not taking accountability for your own actions and resorting to “but I always have gold healing” when you play a main healer who should have gold healing by default.
It is possible to climb, and there is only one common denominator in what is stopping you from climbing and that is yourself.
Everyone is going to have these same “bad teams”, “smurfs”, “throwers”, etc just as much as you are, yet they will still be able to climb.
You have to work on something, and it might take a pair of fresh eyes to see why you are struggling. I suggest recording an average match, or a match where you dont understand why you lost, and get other people to look at it and give suggestions and critique your play.
As someone who plays Baptiste, Lúcio, Ana and Zen (I peaked 2.9k with Support and 2.7k with Tank), Baptiste is the best main healer to rank up with right now. You should focus on making your teammates alive first and foremost, but also focus on killing/securing elims here and there with his gun when the opportunity shows up. Use Amp Matrix to give your team offensive openings (unless you desperately need to keep them alive - like they’re caught in a Graviton - in this case I always use the Amp to heal).
Thanks for the rec. I typically outheal the main as Lucio as well. I guess the struggle I have with the team dynamic is the low quality of DPS you get when you start slipping down into low Plat. It’s a stark difference between low Plat and 2800+ so it seems to be tough match after tough match.
I guess I’d just like to know what a good measure of success is. A level set.
Thing is, healing alone really doesn’t win games. It maintains a 6v6, but that doesn’t give an advantage moving forward like getting a kill will to put it at a 6v5. It’s glorified stalling that puts your odds of winning entirely into your teammates’ hands. Supports need to go beyond that and do something that directly tilts the odds in their team’s favor (like eliminating and/or excellent shot calling).
Supports can do A LOT more than healing.
If you want more information on that concept id watch ML7’s unranked to GM with Mercy only. Id explain it myself but its a lot. ML7 goes over how to well, basically hyper carry with Mercy.
This is a huge issue going all the way to masters.
The lack of education in this game is strikingly high.
There is very little in game education which forces players to go outside of the game to learn about it through youtube videos and watching high level streamers.
Well, under diamond it’s performance based sr, so basically you gain little/more depending on your performance, comparing that performance to those of the same rank and hero.
The support with the most healing doesn’t say whether they’ve contributed a lot, we have to take what support they’re playing into account. with you logic, a zen shouldn’t and probably won’t ever get gold healing, that doesn’t mean he is contributing less than the other support. Support isn’t all about healing but also using their utility.
Them taking this into consideration is what caused things like GOATS and Double Barrier, tanks and support ended up with too much utility to carry a game without needing each other too much
There will always be situations where you just lose without being able to do anything. If you have the feeling like you lose every game due to things like that than imo that just shows that the role doesnt suit your or your mentality is too focused on something else
Did you try playing other roles? When you feel uncomfortable on your main role you might just need a little break
Kabaji is doing an unranked to GM support only educational stream for this reason. He’s a top 500 Tracer that rarely ever heals, but dominates as Baptiste while keeping his team alive. You should check it out for tips on how to climb.
You’re right, and I think this is absolutely the point the OP means to make. As a Support, you don’t just have to keep your team alive, you also need to provide some DPS.
This means the best Supports are the ones that are also DPS, hence why the two best Supports lately have been Moira and Baptiste because they’re just the best at DPSing and Healing at the same time.
Then there’s Mercy, who (surprise surprise) is NOT even the best healer in the game anymore and has ABSOLUTELY NO DPS to speak of. You’ll boost maybe 1000 damage in a game, but thats not even close to the 6-8k you’d get for playing Moira or Baptiste or even Zen, and you might get about 6 Res’s, but thats nothing compared to the 20-30 eliminations you might get on Moira, Baptiste, or any other hero.
Just being Support doesn’t work. You have to kill stuff too. That’s why Mercy is in such a rough spot right now. She’s fine if your team can actually DPS stuff and you can focus on keeping them alive, but that’s a really rare situation and you’re just better off playing someone else.
try focusing more on your decision making and less on your stats. are you in the right position, are you healing the right person at the right time, are you reacting to what the enemy is doing correctly. if you die do you understand what mistake you made.
you need active focus on that stuff. if you just focus on stats it encourages a passive state of mind.
good stats naturally come from good play. but good stats are not good play, you can get good stats from bad play.
It can feel that way with every role. You playing tank but dps aren’t doing anything, you’re playing dps and your supports arent doing anything, your playing support and your tanks are doing nothing.
It’s all the same really.
If you’re below diamond the game will try to boost you based on your personal stats if it thinks you should deserve a higher rank. This combats elo hell a bit.
If you’re above diamond it only ever looks and if you win or lose the game. So it’s harder to rank up there.
But no matter the rank, you can absolutely get better. You do make mistakes and those mistakes do decide if you win or lose games. Also you having gold healing means nothing. You could be healing a Rine to full health when instead you could have healed two dps and a support instead with the same amount of healing. Also supports do more than healing, they support the team fight in more ways than just healing.
Record a game and il be happy I review. I play Bapt in Mastres so I can probably help out.
I know how you feel. On lucio in competitive I did over 27,000 healing and we still lost the match. I feel you can do absolutely everything on your part and it doesn’t matter if there’s someone not doing their part. It’s really frustrating
