Before, we received a change to no limits. No limits created these wonky strategies like 6 winstons/dvas on the first point of volskaya industries or these weird 2/2/2 strategies with 2 reinhardts and 2 lucios. It ultimately had to be scrapped because it limited design space and created very unfun cheesy hero compositions.
We might be getting into a point where creating more supports and tanks which are very important for creating versatile different strategies and compositions will only deepen the need for 3/3 or 4/2 (3 tanks 3 support or 4 tanks 2 supports) compositions in the game. Hell we might even get to a point where 2/4 (2 tanks 4 supports) might be the best composition in the game just because of the sheer power of the support ultimates and heal in general.
By limiting 2 heroes per role we never get into this issue. People need to choose compositions where 2 dps are important part of it like dive used to be.
Goats which is the prevalent composition in the high level of the game that includes 3 supports and 3 tanks and its core is brigitte, lucio, zarya and reinhardt needs to be adjusted or completely scrapped.
I feel like no limit to heroes per role is heavily limiting blizzard in creating new interesting heroes like another similar hero to brigitte (what i mean by this is a hard counter to a different problematic hero) which was supposed to counter tracer but needs to be nerfed because of completely different reason - Goats.
This change also eases the creation of role queue, which was recently discussed a lot here.

No more, Road, Orisa, D.VA comps? No more Nepal Sanctum Hooks… No more Hooking off people down the hole in Ilios Well?
Thanks but no…
I don’t like the idea of a hard limit because it prevents you from playing the role you want to simply because 2 of your teammates have also decided to play that role. I think a role queue would be much better because then you can tell the game what you wanna play and you won’t be locked out of that role by your teammates.

The role queue should be part of the change and it should come out in the same patch. I agree with your argument.

Oh sorry. I kind of skimmed your post, probably missed some things you said.
I used to be very against role queue for this exact reason, but I now think it would give a net benefit to the experience of playing overwatch. These non-2/2/2 comps are very powerful sometimes (GOATs) and fun but they’re just not very common on the ladder (except for 3/4 DPS, which is almost never the optimal comp). What is quite common is not having enough players willing to play tank or support. A huge number of lower-ranked games are plagued by this problem, and role queue would solve it. Yeah we’d be sacrificing our ability to play these interesting heavily stacked compositions but the end of the day it’s worth it.

I don’t understand your argument. You can still play roadhog/orisa in these maps and hook people how you want, just not with D.va in the same composition.
Thats the point… D.Va is mandatory in every comp…
Loosing out on matrix is a huge disadvantage
What if I want to play tracer and another player picks tracer? Why shouldn’t we go back to no limits?

It’s a disadvantage you have to take if you want to play roadhog on ilios well. That’s the point of my argument. You have to make compromises and can’t choose what’s best composition all the time - 3/3 comp right now.
Because then only 3 heroes get played.
You kinda missed my point. I started with no limits to compare what needed to be done before to follow up what needs to be done next for the game. No limits was scrapped and it won’t be coming back to competitive play. You can still play no limits in arcade though.
Exactly so once you remove the option to play triple tank you open the floor for more balance options without nurfing a hero into the absolute ground.
Right now to take dva from a must pick to a lower pick rate you need to make her trash. If you’re capped at 2 you can give her smaller adjustments
Just remove Brigitte’s AOE heal and replace it with a stationary healing ability that way the enemy can actually decide if they want to take the fight knowing that the enemy team has additional healing. That would nerf GOATS in general
Yeah, that might be a good nerf, but what if blizzard wants to make a support with AOE heal in the future. It will create a similar composition. If you limit the heroes per role blizzard can create this hero and this hero can see a play in a healthy 2/2/2 composition.
What you did there. I see it.

I think adding a one-trick game mode (or several of them) would be a better idea than no-limits. In a one-trick game mode the player can pick a hero before matchmaking and there is no in-game hero switch (so having per-hero MMR isn’t a problem and that could result in better matchmaking).
