Why is he officially named Wrecking Ball and not Hammond
Wreckingball is his public stage name.
Also, him being a hamster means that he cannot verbally tell people his name (assuming he wanted to out himself as a rodent)

Hammond is better known as Wrecking Ball.
Gabriel is better known as Reaper.
Aleksandra is better known as Zarya.
Olivia is better known as Sombra.
Amelie is better known as Widowmaker.
Jamison is better known as Junkrat.
Satya is better known as Symmetra.
Akande is better known as Doomfist.
Angela is… hmm… Maybe she just likes Mercy better?

For the same reason that Hana Song is in the gallery as D.Va. Hammond is a performer in the junkertown arena, and that’s his stage name, if you will.

Do people not remember that noone knows who hammond is except Winston, but he presumed he went to earth alone. And then he made Wrecking Ball, the Mech. And Piloted him. So noone knows that Hammond is piloting the Champion in the Junkertown arena.
Because Hammond is the pilot of the hero Wrecking Ball

I think the dev explain it once that Hammond is the name the scientists choose for him and Wrecking ball is the name he choose for himself thats why he wants to be called wrecking ball.
I could be wrong tho.

Hammond was his slave name given to him as he was born in a cage by man who he would grow up to destroy in the arena
These two are slightly different since they had to reinvent themselves. For all intents and purposes, Amelie and Gabriel are dead.
But yeah, nothing unusual about being known by something other than your real name in the hero-world.

The same reason Tracer is called Tracer and not Lena.
Hammond is the name the scientists of Horizon Lunar Colony gave him.
Wrecking Ball is the name he gave himself, and what the general public know him as.
This is the same as Sombra, Reaper and Mercy among others.
All have “real” names.
However, they go by what people know them as in game.
You’re free to call him Hammond, if you so wish, but officially he is called Wrecking Ball.
