The gyro controls are absolutely terrible on the Nintendo Switch version. Please work on them, I have no idea how they got past any testing that’s been done.
OMG I thought i was the only one I been in the training room for hrs trying to find the perfect settings and I just cant seem to get the feel of it. I played splatoon and I have 200 hrs on the game with gyro so I know something is really off.
can you explain to me whats wrong with the gyro I wanna here your input of what they need to fix?
It’s the same thing wrong with every other console game that uses gyro. They all add smoothing you don’t need and all seem to have a minimum movement threshold.
To see an example of what I mean by minimum movement threshold, start Overwatch or even Splatoon. Now slowly rotate the controller to the right. And I mean very very slowly. You’ll notice the screen doesn’t move. This is because if you don’t move the controller fast enough the game ignores your input. The idea is this helps stabilize the screen, but it makes it feel unresponsive. It’s not too bad in Splatoon or Overwatch as it is in Fortnite, but it is there.
You might think, “well that’s just a limitation of the controller”. I assure you it’s not. You can connect your Switch Pro Controller to your PC and load a game using Steam with gyro enabled and you’ll see how proper gyro can be just as fast and responsive as a mouse.
The other thing they do is they add Smoothing. To remove jitter in your movements the game applies aggressive smoothing to your gyro input. This again makes it feel unresponsive and laggy.
The gyro re-center button is done wrong. Instead of re-centering the gyro it should disable the gyro when held. When used in this way it emulates a player picking up a mouse off the table and resetting it. Since you can’t do that with the controller you press a button to disable the gyro and release to enable it again.
It jitters and shakes, I can hardly flick, and it just overall doesn’t feel good to use. I have 1500 hrs in Splatoon 2 and I’ve had no issues in that game
Yep same problem I had when I tried it out. Its to shaky and jittery and know matter how many times I try different settings it doesn’t feel smooth I think its because since the game is running in 30fps maybe thats why its running really bad, I hope they could take a look into and fix it because I was really looking forward to the gyro controls and im really disappointed that its not like gyro splatoon at all
Also some people are saying its really bad in the OW switch discord server im in
What settings are you using? If you can place the controller on a flat surface and do not see the shake then chances are the shake/jitter you see is on you.
Here’s the settings I use and I can easily keep the screen steady as I aim.
Invert Gyro-aiming Pitch axis - off
Invert Gyro-aiming Yaw axis - off
Invert Gyro-aiming Roll axis - off
Gyro-aiming Pitch axis sensitivity - 25
Gyro-aiming Yaw axis sensitivity - 0
Gyro-aiming Roll axis sensitivity - 50
Disable Gyro while using stick - off
When it comes to the sensitivities there’s no need to use all 3.
Do either of you have access to a PC with Overwatch or any shooter? If so please try connecting your Switch Pro Controller to your PC and use Steam to setup Gyro controls. If you need help I can give instructions. I guarantee though with the proper settings you’ll be amazed at how much better it is than Splatoon or any other console game that uses gyro. And no, it doesn’t have to do with the FPS or resolution.
So I used your settings for about 5 hrs and testing different hero’s with it and its alright, but it still feels wired for me in this game it just doesn’t feel right. I’m not really sure if there’s smoothing applied as well, but I’m guessing there is. Aiming feels a bit delayed. Maybe it could be related to the FPS. I’m not sure if you played splatoon but play a few games with gyro and then come back and try them on OW switch, and see the different’s in smoothing and aiming. Hopefully they could optimize the fps and gyro a bit more.
And I don’t have a pc to test the gyro unfortunately but if I did I would try it out.
try using hes settings and see if you like it
If you are still getting jitter/shaking I’d recommend going into the Switch system settings and under “Controller” update all controllers and calibrate the gyro.
I’ve tested handheld mode, joycons detached, and the switch pro controller and I’m able to keep the screen steady.
I don’t know your play style, but I’ve seen many hold the controller in such a way that is going to invite jitter because it’s not actually easy to hold the controller perfectly steady without some help. If not already I recommend resting your forearms on your legs or something while you play. Also, you should be tilting/rotating the controller and not moving it left/right.
IDK if you can post videos on here, but in a few days I’m going to try and post a video comparing gyro controls on PC Overwatch to gyro controls on Switch Overwatch and I’ll see if I can show the smoothing. Although the smoothing is actually there to help with the jitter.
Oh one other thing. Not sure if you are playing with aim assist or not, but disabling “gyro aim assist” in options doesn’t actually disable aim assist while using gyro. To completely remove it you also have to turn the aim assist window/strength to 0.
Although personally I think aim assist with gyro in Overwatch is OP even with the issues I have with Blizzard’s gyro implementation.
Unless I’m mistaken my settings are a higher sensitivity than the default which could introduce more jitter for the two of you. Although as I said you only need 2 of the 3 aim modes (pitch and roll) . Set the 3rd one (depending on how you hold the controller) to 0. Setting it to 0 could help with the jitter or weird feeling controls.
And instead of using my sensitvities try really low sensitivities and work your way up. Keep pitch (vertical sensitivity) half of roll (horizontal sensitivity). So maybe try 5 and 10. Then 10 and 20. and keep working your way up until you feel you are turning as fast as you need or you notice jitter.
I personally like to set my sensitivity so that when I tilt the controller to the left as much as is comfortable for me my character does a 180 turn. That for me in Overwatch for Switch is 50 roll.
I updated my controls and the gyro still feels wired for me. I play on a pro
controller btw. I tested out putting aim assist at 0 and it made things super hard to hit lol so i changed it back to normal, I also have steady hands and I have my controller in a good position. I don’t know man maybe its just me that doesn’t like the gyro in this game at the (moment) maybe it isn’t the jitter, or it could be gyro in this game isn’t smooth enough. I really cant describe why I appreciate you helping me tho and I would like to see your video whats your youtube.
I cant record my overwatch clips but here’s how I use gyro in splatoon if you wanna watch

I tried out Ice’s ssettings and it feels so much better. Thanks a bunch
Cool. Yeah, it looks like in that training clip you didn’t have a problem holding the controller steady. I’d love to see your Overwatch clips. I’m guessing though you can’t flick as good as you do in Splatoon due to the amount of smoothing that Overwatch has.
In my testing Splatoon’s cursor seems to keep up more with my gyro movements than Overwatch. I can turn the controller quickly in Splatoon and when I stop turning the controller is about the time my crosshair stops in Splatoon. Where as in Overwatch the crosshair will continue to move for a split second after I stop moving the controller.
That to, and the weirdness the gyro is in OW
unfortunately.
I made a video where I tried to highlight the problems of the gyro controls in Overwatch for Switch.
Thank you for making this video the gyro seems to run good on pc then on switch. I wonder how long its going to take from them to fix it. Blizzard if you see this video please fix the gyro, it isn’t good on the switch version.
