"Grow A Backbone" People Have A Part In Toxicity Too

A few days ago I created a topic about asking does reporting deter toxic players in this game. Many people said that it was. However a few stated that it’s not fault of toxic players. Apparently wanting a better gaming experience, not asking for unnecessary abusive behavior is being a baby. Apparently it’s my fault that I am getting offended by N* words or homophobic slurs. I should just act like an emotionless AI, just play the game and git gud, right?!

Well, I can’t. I am playing games to get away from daily life or sometimes problems of the world. How can anyone play better while someone wants that person to get cancer and die?

These so-called strong, edgy people are part of the problem. They are condoning this toxicity under the name of “freedom of speech”, “freedom of expression” " I started to think if they are harassing other players too.

Let me tell you something. Freedom of speech is not equal to hate speech or saying whatever rude thing you want and getting away with it. I am not playing a game to expose this kind of behavior just because a person wants to get attention and feels good about themself. I might stop thinking about them but first they need to learn the rules and act like human beings!

Some smart-minded (irony included) person would suggest me to play something else. Am I not an adult? Don’t I have the option to play whatever I want? Why are we normalizing this problem?

Jerks want to be free to harass other people on the internet, and freak out when someone brings up the fact that harassment is wrong.

Fact: harassment is wrong. Expecting people to “just get used to being harassed” is not the solution, not harassing people is the solution.

There is no easy answer at least not for Blizz.

Toxic people pay Blizz the same if not more (alt+smurf) money. And because the dev’s don’t do anything the simplest solution is “suck it up, report, and mute them”

Yes harassment is wrong, but at some point people are being offended by things that had no intention of being offensive.

Example: Saying GG

People that justify abusive language as freedom of speech are evil. You may have the freedom but you aren’t supposed to abuse it that’s when that ‘freedom’ for that person needs to be taken away because they are abusing it.

Its easier to say something ignorant than something smart.

Are you talking legally?

No, people are telling you to grow a thicker skin because it’s unavoidable.
This victim complex isn’t necessary. Just report someone and go on with your life.

This freedom of speech is really something weird that mostly americans think. The first thing you learn in law lectures in Europe about freedom is: MY LIBERTY ENDS WHERE YOURS BEGINS

you cannot insult people and call it freedom

The funky thing is that the American Bill of Rights (which is one of the founding documents of America, right up there with The Constitution) concludes with the assertion of: YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO INFRINGE ON OTHER PEOPLE’S RIGHTS

Which is something that sadly gets lost in the rabid zealosy that some Americans have of “It’s a free country I do what I waaaaant!!!”

Also, the freedom of speech as enshrined in the US Bill of Rights does not apply to privately owned establishments or networks, which includes video games like Overwatch. Blizzard can and does remove people who act in ways they deem inappropriate.

It’s no different in US courses. Most people who gripe about “MI FREEDOMS!!” have little grasp of what that actually entails.

I mean calling it out will not only provoke more, but add to the problem. Block, report, mute not in that order, and move on.

Well, maybe you are too sensitive. People are rude, especially online, and nothing will change that. You’re better off muting, reporting, and ignoring the people that act that way.

As far as freedom vs hate speech, I do side with freedom. Just because someone dislikes you doesn’t mean they should be punished. Again just mute them and move on.

For the record, I try to treat everyone I talk to with a certain level of respect and not ruin anyones good time because my parents love me and raised me right lol

If you become discouraged or distracted, something becomes more difficult. Correct?

Of course that’s correct, I won’t even argue it.

So if you are worried about what other people are doing and distracting your teammates with your complaints about it instead of focusing on winning then then you are decidedly distracted and therefore throwing the game by choosing not to play at your best.

like dude y’all wouldn’t survive an xbox live lobby from 2004. there’s a lot of things in overwatch that irritate me and i’m sorry to say this kind of behavior isn’t anywhere near the top of the list of things that irritate me.

it’s wrong and everything, but it really doesn’t effect someone’s ability to play the game.

There isn’t a whole lot Blizzard can do to curb toxicity when as a community we can’t come together and define it. What one player might see as toxic isn’t so bad to another player. Nobody can really agree with where to draw the line.

Like a poster above said, some people even see “Gg” at the end of a game as toxic. I’ve had others in game flip out and scream toxicity when our main tank asks to group up politely and push the point as a team. You can’t start handing out bans because someone thinks “Don’t play like an idiot” is offensive. It’s very easy to block/report other players. Don’t let them ruin your game otherwise they win.

I can see being annoyed over trolls and being tired of hearing it in games. I just don’t play game to listen to people whine at each other.

but that’s different from being offended.
Most troll like stuff is mindless txt or rabble rabble in a video game, being played online, for the goal of trolling people. It’s bait, big glowing neon colored bait. So when one is offered up bait they should see it AS BAIT. Don’t gulp down the bait then act shocked and offended one just got hooked and trolled by some jerk with their very lazy level of bait.

and a whole lot of troll moves is triggered by someone not switching heroes, not playing well or whatever and it brings out the trolls. They want to get a barb into that player, it’s lame but it’s still 100% bait.
Mute and just go about one’s life.

Overwatch isn’t real life. It’s a video game with random strangers from all over the world. The crud they say to bait/troll/hurt a person carries very little real world weight.

The easy answer is to have principles beyond profits. I am confident Bliz, or at least the overwatch team do have these. They aren’t ignoring toxicity though it really is still an issue. Report them and let Bliz do it’s job.

As for those tough guys who think it’s cool to be abused and that people should ignore it? They are just set in their ways and have accepted being mistreated as normal, they feel it makes them have a “thick skin” and that others should be like them. I don’t fault them I’m sure they have reasons for it. Just try to remember that you making a stink over abuse opens their old wounds. You make them remember and they don’t like it. Just worry about cleaning the toxic players out. The abused will heal from it also even if they don’t help you right now.

In my opinion obviously.

People getting mad over GG is top tier overwatch shenanigans. Ive never seen GG hated to this level in any other games besides this one.

But it works. If you’re not sensitive - you’re protected, no word can harm you. It’s great feeling. Like you’re above mere mortals, but only in word world.
