For the past month and a half or so, I have been getting frame drops in Overwatch. Everything was going smoothly for months before this started happening!
It started when I got a BIOS update. I play on a Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop and I get a BIOS update every now and then.
Before, I was playing on the lowest settings, to get the highest FPS, even though I’m playing on a 60hz screen. These are my settings: h t t p : / / on-winning . com/best-overwatch-competitive-play-video-settings/
So when the BIOS update came in, I would drop from ~160 fps to ~30 and it would shoot back up. This would only last about a second or less and it would happen every minute or so.
Today I did some hardware monitoring while playing. I set the game on windowed mode and played vs 11 bots in custom game, even spectating their 6v6 for a while. My GTX 1050 Ti temperature on uncapped FPS would be around 75c.
So whenever I got the frame drop I would check my task manager and nvidia inspector. My CPU usage was always consistent, at around 70-80% (i7-7700HQ) and my RAM was at around 40% so that isn’t the issue.
Whenever I got a frame drop my GPU usage would drop from around 60% to 20% on max FPS at temps ~75c. I could turn on extreme fan cooling and the drops would stop for a few minutes, but the temp would stay the same, at around 75c. After a few minutes it would start dropping again, even with extreme cooling.
I played on display-based and got temps of around 55c and the frame drops would become very rare, only ocuring once-twice per game.
When I capped it at 144hz the temp would be around 66c and the drops would be a bit more occasional.
Also around the time the frames started dropping I uninstalled OW from my SSD to my hard drive because I had no space and the weather was warmer and so was my room temperature.
I know I can play without the drops on display-based but I’m planning to get a 144hz monitor soon and I want this problem fixed.
Thank you for reasing this long thread and I would appreciate any help possible.
