how the heck is this even a thing?
im talking about normal matches, with equally strong teams on both sides.
those matches are really fun, intense fights on the point/payload/choke/whereever.
then, when you press tab after a few fights to check if the enemy swapped something, you notice that you have gold damage with reinhardt.
im always like “how the heck did this happen?”.
in the particular match i experienced, my teams dps were using cree and phara for the most part.
they did a good job, getting some picks here and there, phara got a 4man kill with a grav combo, u know, normal stuff.
so how the heck did i get gold damage with reinhardt?
how do you feel when this happens?
do you point it out? (in my experience this only makes the dps players play worse, so i usually dont say anything, and we did fine in that match anyway)
again, im talking about the games where this happens when you do normal reinhardt play. (no shieldbot, aggressive when possible and defensive when needed)
im curious if other reinhardt players experienced something similar

Gold medals don’t matter. Stop focusing on the comparison of gameplay and focus on you and your role.

If you spend a lot of time brawling, you get gold damage.
Rein does enormous damage if he gets to brawl much. Most teams will not allow him to do it, or they’ll die or fold before he gets to do it much. But, have a good game on Rein and have good support, into another brawly team, and there you go.
It could also be that someone capable of face tanking you (Ball or Hog or both) face tanked you a lot.

If a gold damage Reinhardt, Zarya, or Hog is new to you then i don’t know what to tell you because that is pretty much how it should be

Depends on the match.
It could mean your dps are playing badly. It could mean you aren’t actually making space for them. It could be that the supports are ignoring them. It could be that you’ve just done a lot of aoe damage in brawls. It could even mean nothing at all.
It’s impossible to say what without watching the match in question.

More serious, its not hard for rein to get gold dmg, i was spending half of game before barrier nerfs with shield up, still got gold dmg quite easly because map was good for plaing rein for example
?
i thought i made it clear in the opening post that this happened on a normal match. both sides equally good. fun match.
i didnt “compare gameplay”, i just noticed this by accident.
i was just curious if other rein players had some similar experiences.

Because angry aggro Rein is a particular comp style and works if the team plays it. Sub 30 second ults, massive fire strikes, and fat shatters.

Tanks do a lot of aoe fluff damage that is ultimately healed through. Rein is especially prone to this if he’s doing a lot of brawling with the enemy rein. Damage medals don’t really tell you anything. A widow killing 2 people every team fight might not give her any medals, but she’s carrying that team.

Sometimes, you just get nano’d, go full Leroy Jenkins and steal the medals.
I just don’t say anything when I have them so that the two DPS think the other one has them.
I usually play support and tank. If I ever get gold damage, I get seriously concerned. No, I don’t start blaming my team or anything. Rather, I like to take that gold medal as an opportunity to wonder why my team isn’t doing damage. And usually, that ends up being on me.
If I’m a tank, maybe I’m not playing aggressively enough. Or maybe I’m not making enough space.
If I’m support, maybe I’m not outputting enough healing. Maybe I’m pocketing.
You’re spending more time dealing damage than providing protection for your team. Your DPS are glass cannons, without protection they can’t dish out the pain.
Probably means your DPS are getting melted or hiding because they don’t have a barrier most the time.
When you have gold damage on Rein, it’s probably you that’s the problem.
Or your teammates are just genuinely horrible, or more likely deliberately throwing to derank.
Reinhardt can hit multiple people at once with a lot of damage.
If played with little resistance, he can get gold damage easy.
I suggest getting a Hog to (attempt to) counter him. The other roles have their counters too (Zen can discord him so he’s forced to use his shield more), but I most play tanks, so I can’t speak for other roles.
Gold damage on Rein is easy to get when you’re getting every Nano. Nano-Hammer is still one of the best combos in the game. Doesn’t require multiple ults to be effective.
Also, 75% of DPS damage is done to barriers, which is important but doesn’t get counted towards medals. Rein ignores all barriers with all of his attacks.
This can happen in a few ways. Ir ur rien ur hamm hits for about 75 damage…if u hit lets say 5 of the enemy team with one swing u just did 375 damage… cree hits 1 person per shot cant remeber his damage number…but his over all damage is low. Pharah unless she is hiting a group all the time each rocket dos about 120ish if i remember right. And spash i think is at about 80…so unless she is hiting groups like u can with one shot. Rien can easily out damage them.
Now that is one way rhe other thought is if u were not blockint enough and cree/pharah were dieing due to that they cant be doing damage when they are dead.

I agree with this sentiment, it just comes down to cleave and up time.
I think this is one REALLY important thing a lot of people miss. When a rein is pressuring the other team and going aggro he is often the only one dealing damage. Often time he gets gold damage simply because he is cleaving through shields while his team is breaking them down. Depending how quickly you clean up fights after the enemies shield gets low rein might just end up with gold off of that.
Yeah, I hate the “I have gold damage, why?” as I basically spend half the match soloing barriers. If I get one of those clowns, I go on flank missions, feed and then ask what happened to their gold.
It happens when the enemy barriers aren’t being destroyed. Your piercing damage lets you get damage in which most other heroes can’t do.
