I want Genji to have his sword all the time, I know it sounds crazy. But please indulge me just little.
Imagine that genji gets a new weapon he can swap to, and it’s the same sword he currently uses for dragon blade. The damage would be much reduced probably around 50 damage. That way it’d be a four swipe kill or three and a dash. To be clear I would still want his shurikan to be his strongest weapon though.
For his ultimate it’d be much the same as it is now; but with a new addition. He’d now be able to swap to his shurikan mid ult. These shurican would also be slightly changed by making them explosive (no headshot dmg though)
Genjis blade is such an exciting and fun move, but it only lasts a few seconds; And I am of the opinion that Genji could be a much more enticing hero to play, if he had his sword as a part of his regular kit. It definitely would fulfill a particular fantasy in a hero, that I’d personally like to see in overwatch. Genji would finally stand a chance against a shield. Also I believe that having the sword all the time would give him an easier entry point to those without experience; while also increasing the potential skill cap with him.
If 50 dmg was to much I can imagine him being very balanced around 40dmg. So five swipes or four and a dash. And if that was still to much, I’d still happily take it if he only did 40 and couldn’t multihit when not using his ult. What do you think though? Please tell me.
I would like to point out that an earlier version of Genji during the game’s initial development did do this, however having an extremely mobile hero with a melee weapon tends to be a very hard thing to counter.
Not only that, but permanent Dragonblade was incredibly hard to balance for another reason as well:
It was almost impossible to find the balance between murdering everything and “WHY WONT YOU DIE ALREADY?!?!” (This was said by Kaplan some time ago in an interview I believe.)
Which is kinda why it’s an ult in the first place
