Getting reported for picking a hero

Today 3 players wrote in chat that they reported me for picking Widowmaker.

As I picked her at the beginning of a round they wrote directly “he is throwing” without giving me a chance.

At the end I had gold eliminations (got good supp kills), silver damage and as we lost the round they blamed me that my pick was the reason that we lost the round.

That behaviour is so toxic in competitive. I wish Blizzard would ban those people from competitive if they write something like that and report people (wrong report) for their pick.

Get ready for your unavoidable and unappealable suspension. Blizzard support will say “it wasn’t because of your hero choice” yet refuse to tell you what it was actually for.

Have fun.

False reports are bannable, so they might be getting some punishments.
But, yeah, some people can’t or won’t understand that hero picks are not reportable. Same for people playing terribly, which is also not reportable as long as it’s not deliberate (fortunately !).

Yea but many people still report under the pretense of, “Well sometimes I can’t tell if they’re actually throwing or not when they have a “bad performance” so I’m just gonna report anyways.”

It’s sad.

Blizzard has been very helpful with many people actually. They have been suspending false reporters and rightfully so.

Simply stated- they are idiots and ignorantly uninformed.

You can pick whom you want and play. This is a rule by Blizzard and them false reporting you - they can be suspended. Report them for false reporting and harassment.

We believe players can choose to play any available hero during any game at any time, and that their choice of hero alone is not a behavior that should be penalized by our customer service team under any of the player report categories (including griefing, inactivity, or poor teamwork).[/quote]

#1: You bought the game. Your temporary teammates don’t have a right to tell you how/what to play. It’s your money, your game, play how you want.

#2: Widowmaker is picked pretty much all the time in high-level Overwatch. I mean, just tune into the Overwatch League to see how many teams run Widow, and often I might add.

#3: As others have pointed out, Blizzard has been very clear about hero choice not being a reportable offense. I don’t think you are in danger of a ban.

I have only witnessed or heard of 1 instance of false reporting suspensions being handed out and that was due to them being a serial offender and the person they were reporting being a high profile streamer. Blizzard will not and does not suspend on the basis of false reporting for the average person on the ladder. It takes very extraneous circumstances for them to take action.

Suspensions are handles by the automated system 9 times out of 10 and as stated in the email you receive when you get one of these suspensions

This decision will not be reversed unless there is evidence of account compromise.

Your faith in their judgement and reason is misplaced. I’ve experienced their incompetence first hand by being suspended for picking Doomfist and Torbjorn, being reported over it, and receiving a suspension that was not overturned when I presented evidence to back up my claim.

I wouldn’t worry too much myself. SO many people have reported me for playing Mei yet I have yet to get any sort of suspension whatsoever because I have great teamwork, I use voice to call out walled targets and who I’m freezing, I also do swap when I feel Mei isn’t working. I know I’ve gotten reported a hell of a bunch but yet to get any punishment because I’m doing nothing wrong.

I am a support - dps flex and medals don’t matter. you can have 10 gold medals and still lose because there is no I in team. If the team wasn’t following up on your picks or whatever the case was, it may be best that you swap to a hero that would work with the team comp. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE widow (climbed to diamond with her and ended last season at 3498 (I will get masters this season!)) Like the bastion, sym and torbjorn “specialists” they won’t swap off so you have to play around them to the best you can. But like in your case it may have been best that you swap to try to compliment the other players on the team that were not following up on your picks. GOOD LUCK THIS SEASON!!! (BTW this is an alt account)

I can tell you that they do because I have reported people for that when I hear it in chat when they have report others. The next day I get a nice shiny window notification.

Will it happen for everyone? No idea. I can just tell you the experience I have had and I am happy when people are suspended for false reporting because they are toxic people usually.

It’s the automated system and not actually Blizzard. The report could be for literally ANYTHING or even false and they would still get the suspension.

It is reviewed when an email is sent in response to ticket/suspension.

hahahahahaha, you actually believe that? How cute.

Fuey500 was being suspended on an almost daily basis due to the system being automated, based solely on player reports - false ones, I might add. If that’s not enough to convince you then I don’t know what would.

You have to send an email in reply/appeal to the suspension.

Also, there is no reason to be obnoxious, seriously. This is a discussion.

That’s dumb.

20 characters is also dumb.

Contacting support gets you no where unless you’re able to get a developer to respond to your claim and that requires you to be a decently noticed person in the community. Fuey500 has a decent, and vocal, following on twitch and received a lot of high profile coverage of the claim from people like Stylosa, BTC, and Your Overwatch before a dev made a comment on the situation.

If that wasn’t the case then I’m 100% certain that he would have been forced to wait out the suspension just like I did.

I’m stating facts about the system, nothing more. You think i’m being “obnoxious” because of that and it’s fine. I think you’re incredibly adorable, however.

The same thing literately happened to me today as well, and on comp. Didn’t even get a chance to prove that I could play Widow before I was getting grief from my ‘team’ who threatened to report me for ‘trolling’. I would have been perfectly happy to change characters had they asked nicely, but when people are being arses about it, it’s really quite pathetic. I get the feeling it’s because they can’t see Widow duking it out with the other characters, so that instantly makes them think she’s useless or the person isn’t playing her right, which is, of course, stupid. I told them Blizzard wouldn’t do anything about me playing her, and they responded “we’ll see about that”. I’m so scared.

Widow gets so much hate… and is a super easy target for anyone that’s tilting or playing poorly.

That being said, because your playing a long-range squishy, you probably aren’t going to be around the objective most of the time. This puts extra pressure on your team because securing kills isn’t the only aspect in objective based games.

So yeah, bam, people will be going out of there way to report you. If you don’t have borderline the best game of your life every game, then you’re going to be called out repeateadly, bullied, and essentially become the scapegoat for your team.

Kind of feel bad for good Widows.

Also, it happens in every mode for Widow, not just comp.

God forbid they don’t give unlimited reporting to these report-addicts.

My smurf just got muted because, even after playing fairly with my team, and being a “good player” (I didn’t throw, I didn’t say anything wrong to my team mates), I said “ez af” in global chat and someone said “report him”.

If I’d done something wrong, I wouldn’t be writing this, but getting reported over and over because i’m practicing on a smurf account and saying “ez af” AFTER the game ended is ridiculous.

You know getting frustrated is one thing, especially after losing, but this is just being an idiot. Don’t do that and please Blizzard, fix your report system.

I played with widow today he was really good but in the second round he could not get any pick half the round anyway he switched after that
I dont mind people playing whatever if they can secure kills with their hero but when they dont what the point ?! why not switch
anyway I report for poor teamwork anyone who just stick with one hero the entire when its obliviously he is the one causing us to lose
but I wont report some one who is actually doing some work
