Getting disconnected from server

Since the last patch I’ve been getting disconnected a lot from the server. I check my internet connection everytime this happens and the problem isn’t on my internet, because it’s working perfectly. Don’t know what’s happening but from what I see many people are having this problem too lately. And then it takes a huge time until I can reenter games.
I just got disconnected from a competitive game and only was able to return 2 minutes later right when defense had started. I won the match and got a penalty (ok I accept it) but no sr win for the game won.
From something that almost never happened to something that happens quite regularly, I’m starting to be afraid of playing ranked because it already happened on 2 ranked matches. This match I was able to come back in time and win, but the other time and the next one I might not be so lucky, and when this happens not only does my team get screwed but so do I, even if I win. Is this problem on my end, on Blizzard’s end, on both? Is there something I can do to prevent this? Because the fear of getting disconnected is ruining my game experience.

The best thing to do is avoid Competitive play and investigate where the disconnection is occuring. A WinMTR test helps:

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR from http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/ (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West - 24.105.30.129
  • US Central - 24.105.62.129
  • Brazil - 54.207.107.12
  • Europe - 185.60.114.159
  • Europe - 185.60.112.157
  • Korea - 211.234.110.1
  • Taiwan - 203.66.81.98

Thank you for trying to help, this caused me multiples hours ban + a huge loss of SR

Hey, Ssun! Thank you for the WinMTR test. The issue appearing to be with the local home network. The cause of the 16% packet loss could be due to a variety of reasons.

There’s a few suggestions that may help, but the ISP will want to be contacted with the WinMTR test to further troubleshoot the issue.

  • Unstable wireless connection. If possible, try a direct wired ethernet connection.
  • If there are separate modem and router, try bypassing the router.
  • If bypassing helps or unable to be done, specific settings like high privacy/security settings or Quality of Service (QoS)/Wireless Multimedia (WMM), or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) may be the cause or firmware/hardware issues with the router. If assistance is needed, please contact the ISP.
