Getting better with Reaper?

this is kind of a “request advice” post because i know NOBODY who plays reaper, and most “how to” videos i’m pretty sure are OW1 based

from my understanding of what reaper once was, he was essentially a tank buster who was pretty scary if he approached you, especially if you’re squishy

but now? he’s so easy to hear and identify, he’s super easy to counter and shut down… and in all honesty, his damage seems to really lack??

i dunno, i thought his damage was low for a while but today i realised how abysmal it is when even in close quarters with somebody.

he hardly heals himself anymore when fighting, which in all honesty makes his passive totally useless most of the time.

now i know i only have 11 hours on him, i’m kinda new to him so i could also just be bad, i am aware of that.
but i did play him a little when ow ended and ow2 came out… he feels worse than ever

but i definitely need tips, maybe with positioning or priorities etc

Best thing about Reaper is his strength is when the fight has to come to him. Way better on Defend than Attack.

Sniper maps and wide open maps tend to be a stay away. On a few close quarter sections you can get away with him gate keeping a tight choke pathway.

9 times out of 10 if it is a Pharah friendly map ya gotta switch.

The current state of OW, just play what you want and have a back up hero when it doesn’t work out.

Reaper can be a nice sleeper on first point Nubani defend because he has option galore for teleport flank routes.

When you close the distance make every crit shot count and have an escape route or communicate with DPS/TAnk teammate to give you a lane.

Practice deathmatch a ton until you can consistently give squishes a 1 or 2 piece to the face that makes them respawn.

That’s the biggest key to Reaper. Getting in and out with a fast pick.

High degree of difficulty but once you swap to a different DPS getting head shots with tighter accuracy feels like easy mode.

Hes situational and it depends on the map and what tank you’re facing. His large hitbox makes him an easy target and very prone to CC. For example if youre playing on Havana vs a Sigma and snipers it will be very tough.

Beforing commiting to a flank always run these 2 scenarios:

  1. Can I make it over there without drawing attention?
  2. Once im there, if I cant win the 1v1 and need to disengage can I do so safely without dying?

Reaper has a higher downtime than most heroes so being able to escape and join your team is vital. Sometimes flanking is not the best solution and pushing with your tank is better but again it depends if a hanzo or widow is lingering around.

His damage just feels a bit inconsistent, but I wouldn’t say it’s bad. I think reapers greatest strength is his ult. If you can surprise people with your ult you should go far… and it’s easier than ever cause there’s so many boosted players so low rank idiots are in every rank, even gm.

His ult can easily be shut down though by any type of CC, even a small boop from lucio can take him out of range and do tickle damage but you are right, if you can time it well it can bring good results but thats with most ults.

Most people are only stopping a reaper ult if they see him coming. That’s why I said if you can surprise them with every ult it’s highly effective.

I feel like i’ve definitely noticed this. I usually try to chase after a fight in an attempt to help push and it’s very 50/50 on whether it works or not

I definitely seem to struggle with this, but whenever I fight against Reaper and he gets away I notice he’s able to recover well. So that’s just a me issue for now lol

I usually avoid deathmatch because it gets me in a weird way (I was gonna say jumpy but I don’t think that’s right lol. Anxious in a sense? Idk) but I definitely need help dealing with squishies.
I’ve died to squishies way too many times

I definitely do best with Winston, Dva, Rein and Hog. Orisa is okay unless the Orisa is a god player and destroys me lol. Sigma… not so much

This is usually where I fail. I can sneak around easy enough, but getting away is not my strongest point.
I can’t tell if it’s better to shadowstep or wraith away half the time either.

This, for sure. I almost got a team-wipe today but a Baptiste put his utility field thing up, so I got 3/5. Sometimes I feel like i’m waiting or hiding too much and it’s obvious? But generally I think i’m okay with his ults

You kinda need to play out the fight in your head before it even happens but generally never use shadow step. Is there a room you can wraith into for cover then shadow stepping away? Whats the closest healthpack? Would they follow you in there and you can finish them off? Is the enemy’s support in reach to heal them?

This is usually when I auto-dip, unless I have somebody else with me too.

This is also a nightmare for me on newer maps lol.
On older maps from OW1, I know every healthpack and I’m good to go. Newer maps? It doesn’t matter if OW2 is close to a year old, I’m still getting lost lol

Yeah its not easy once a support latches on them but thats why landing those first 2 shots are so vital.

I’l be honest im not that well informed of healthpacks on new maps either but its something you have to learn while playing reaper since his mobility is limited.
