"Get Better Positioning"

I see this statement in a lot of threads, but by itself it’s not particularly helpful.

Okay then.

How?

I’m looking forward to it. I’ve seen countless videos but nothing really helps.

It’s mostly gamesense, being with your team and aware of what angles of attack the enemy has stuff like:

Does the enemy sniper have LOS to the healer
am I far enough from the group to help heal and stay out of danger, or too far and a flanking tracer/genji will gib me before I can get help.

Stuff like that, being aware of the threats to you and positioning yourself in a way to make you able to do your job, and not die.

I’m a support main, so my lens is a bit tinted.

Two basic questions that you can ask at any point and time and mostly get all of those answers:

  • Am I able to do my job
  • Am I safe

That’s what they say in that video at least and I think it’s a good basic concept to start from

After that it’s a quesiton of details.

  • Where are you relative to teammates/enemies
  • Where are your teammates/enemy
  • What characters are there in the match
  • What ults/abilities are ready/what could happen next?

Basically having good positioning means preparing for different scenarios:
Having a plan A and a plan B, staying pressuring the enemy team while still being able to protect your healers, poking for damage while still staying in sight of your healers etc. etc. etc.

It’s great but one question. In my games, I almost never have a tank giving me a space so should I just stop playing cree like forever?

Well that sucks.

I’d usually just start with asking the player to do certain things. I play a bunch of Zarya and often co-operate with random Rein players and I often make sure to tell them when they can/should engage to benefit our team.
If you feel like you see what’s “wrong” in the team or something that a player should do differently, just tell them imo. Tell that Rein where to stand/walk, tell your team to move in and tell them who to focus fire on.

I guess I kinda have the benefit here since I’m a main tank but I still think you should tell the players you play with what you think would benefit your team in that match.
Just make sure you don’t step on anyones little toes!

To be honest I gave up on communicating with my team till the next season. If I can start at somewhere other than bronze, I hope everything will change. Thanks for the video and tips.

Np man, and sorry to hear that. I hope you can find someone to queue with that and that you can help each other climb the ranks :+1:

Thanks man, I hope so too :v:

Just don’t go where you shouldn’t be going that’ll put you and teammates at risk. Period. Good positioning and game sense saves lives. Also think about where you can place yourself to allow you or teammates to achieve maximum value.

I noticed in comp that I was often the only one dying to DVa ults, leading me to conclude that my positioning sucked…

So I came up with a few rules of thumb.

  1. Always be within 2 seconds of cover/ doorway in case enemy ults (Dead Eye, DVa ult, Tac Visor, etc)
  2. Be aware of where your team shield tank is. Was embarassing one time I died to a DVa ult and the team Rein was literally right behind me with shield up…
  3. Seize high ground if possible. Stops enemies setting up tac visors, etc on it. Also offers good protection via angles vs. lower ground opposition.

These are all pretty simple, but can make a huge difference very quickly.

Hit scan take high ground. Flanker, flank, but leave room to escape. out numbered don’t put yourself out there. reconize when people on other teams may have ults, spread out or position accordingly… its not rocket science, but then you see people rushing in, diving into groups of 3 when its just them… those are the poeple who lose games for you.

If youre dva beaware, and use your matrix intellegently, same with winston and bubble use it for the team… healers stay behind team etc etc.

No, but you have to be more aware of being attacked. Be more with your healers or use corners and cover as much as possible among other things.

Are your teammates close by?

Do you have an exit approach incase you get swarmed?

What’s the fastest approach back to your healer?

Are you over extended too much where you can’t get back to your team?

Are you feeding?

If you’re expecting a wind-up ult, is there a corner to hide behind?

Do you have high ground?

Does the enemy have high ground?

Are you hiding in the back to combo an ult?

Are you using cover to your advantage?

“POSITIONING” - in other words use the map to your advantage.

In a nutshell if you’re a dps or support you want to be positioned with your tanks between you and the enemy and in a spot the enemy team can’t get to you quickly or have to expose themselves to your whole team. For tanks it’s making sure your healers can heal you and you can get back to the safely to peel without taking too much damage like having a wall close by you can get behind. There’s too many example to list with each situation being different depending on team comps and who is where at anytime, it’s down to asking your self “am I safe here or can I get back to my team safely?”

Well positioning is more based around who you’re playing and where your team is. For example you can’t expect to position the same way with soldier as you would with tracer, or ana, or mercy, or zenyatta.
Generally if you’re looking to get better positioning you want to start putting yourself in the most safe position for you. Mercy wants 2 GA targets in front and behind in the most ideal situation. You cannot always get that safety net but you should always be looking to have that safety net. Basically, if you’re super easy to jump on for the enemy team - you’re in a bad spot. That goes for anyone, even tracer. There’s spots where you do not want to be in as her.
Hope that helps a bit ?
