Genji is unique, his playstale is so anti FPS that I would main him, even he is the worst DPS.
No game comes atm close to this gameplay.

Let’s be real,the only “FPS-like” heroes in the game are McCree,Widowmaker,Ashe and Soldier.

Popularity to pickrate has to be the dumbest thing so far
Pickrate never had anything to do with popularity
It’s has always been effectiveness and rest all the arguments that " He Is PoPuLaR or FuN To PlAyZ " is invalid in a player vs player game
Heck that hardly even work in pve let alone in pvp

Because Genji is also very powerful; no Genji main being honest with themselves is denying this. As far as the others go, all Dva does is feed these days and Mercy is still picked very often, so I don’t know why she’s even included.
Hammond honestly isn’t that popular, at least not on the level of those three.

Even in GM you have onetricks that dont pick meta heroes.
They play what they love and make the best out of it.
Some even win mature tournaments with a meme char because they train hard, all I can say is google “Tekken Panda”.

well there’s some more but generally yeah, characters that have a melée weapon to kill you with and can more or less blink around the map aren’t really fps characters.
but yeah.
but genji is extremely popular, just check his pickrate in quickplay since launch, he’s been at the very top of that constantly there, it’s no surprise there’s a big influx of genjis in comp if he actually becomes better than he was.

1 trick is different
People will only play as long as the hero is effective once it’s not they’ll move to different one
Very minute people will still hold on to what they like and that’s what is 1trick
and that will always be very below average

He was in fact so popular that at average performance he only hit an average pickrate. Once he got buffed into being OP, his pickrate exploded and is now contender of top 3 most picked hero overall in the game. But its not about the buffs, cyborg ninjas are just cool to play.

Cause double shield is still strong and D.va is trash rn. She needs to be good so that Winston becomes even close to playable.
He is overtuned i’m not gonna lie, but his popularity does affect his pickrate.
I’m holding off on my assessment of genji and his power versus perception. It’s been five minutes.
Because they are underpowered heroes. They are not strong in their roles like Genji is.
Hammond is not that popular. People just play him to avoid actually tanking.
Because DPS rarely define metas.
It’s part of the reason. Not the sole reason. Mercy is still quite popular considering that shes’ an utter throwpick and pocketbot. Dva isn’t that popular, she’s only popular in a certain way… Hammond is nowhere near a popular hero, like at all. You’re better off comparing Genji with Ana and Rein
