Genji help with Ana

Genji is by far my favorite hero to play, but I’m a potato with him. One of the matchups that I struggle against (sadly) is against ana with anti nade available. I swear no matter how close I get to her and on point my deflect is, the anti nade still goes off on me and is able to heal herself and any surround teammates while watching me die. Any tips or just get good? lol

Leave us Anas alone you opportunistic harpy and go chase somebody your own speed instead of old ladies would be my advice

Hahaha I love playing Ana just as much! I would just like to help my own team when playing genji more :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s aoe. A good Ana knows how to throw a nade outside deflects range but close enough to hit genji. Just push her into tight chokes so she can’t throw it to your side. Sometimes I jump over a defecting genji if he is bad and throw it behind him

:stuck_out_tongue: don’t jump on Ana when she has her nade and make sure you save deflect for her sleep dart. If you see Ana use nade, jump on her. If you know she has sleep dart, then wait until you see the animation start or hear the sound go of before you deflect. Without those two items (or if she’s missing even one of them) she’s literally the easiest kill in the game.

I nade genjis who are deflecting all the time. I even sleep deflecting genjis from behind if they’re careless enough. It’s all about cooldown management and ability tracking. Comes with practice.

Best to come at her from an angle she can’t see (highground or from an angle behind) Damage her from afar so she has to use nade, then jump her. I suggest finding someone who plays Ana and practicing against them in a 1v1 custom game

I generally try to engage when I know she doesn’t have cooldowns, but sometimes see her low or someone near her low and try to dive in to get the kill and that’s generally when disaster happens.
That would be great practice honestly if I could find someone - any takers? I’m a plat-diamond player, but constantly trying to improve and sounds like great advice.

Sneak up on her from behind, wait for the bionade, or bait the bionade first, retreat, then go back to get her.

Sounds easier said than done :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, sounds like the poor ana you are against doesn’t leave spawn after their first death XD

Make sure to poke her from range; Ana’s biggest weakness is poke damage that forces her out of position or to use her grenade on herself

Since Genji’s primary fire doens’t have fall off, practice using Mouse 1 from long distance to really get some good poke on Ana

Try to focus her when she has no-cooldowns; Make SURE that Grenade is burnt before trying anything since the splash can hit you from funny angles when you’re close to her

Another good thing is trying to always jump over her head; since her weapon is projectile when unscoped she has to lead shots which is difficult when you have to constantly turn or flip yourself around

It’s a mind game between the Genji and Ana player; the stronger the player for either, the more 50-50 it becomes

10-4 awesome tips! One thing I think I really struggle with is accuracy with him. I’m a hitscan main so he’s been harder for me to figure out.
I know as ana player too that getting poked can be a royal pain if your other healer isn’t always paying attention. I will make sure to keep that in mind along with watching ana’s cool down use.
Thank you all for the tips - much appreciated it and will put these into action!

Against a good Ana with decent teammates, it definitely is. Especially if Mei, Winston, Symmetra, Sombra, Moira, Brigitte, and/or some other Genji headache is there. You can also try getting her from afar to scare her into using the bionade, but she’ll often opt to retreat and find another source of healing.

Keep doubling jumping witg right clicks

Dont ever dash onto a full health ana

Ana can negate your deflect 8/10 times so try n save deflect for sleep

I’m a diamond ana main (300+ hours on her across all accounts) so I’d be down for some ana-genji 1v1’s :joy: i have nobody to practice with

If you have trouble with the cooldown game between ana and genji with deflect and nade, don’t play it. Instead wait for bionade to go on cooldown. she has 3 ways it can be used. It will be used, it’s your job to keep track of that cooldown and take advantage of it. Without her nade, her survivability becomes a fraction of what it was prior.

The easiest way to adjust to projectile (imo) is to think of this - the further away the person is from you, the more you have to lead them/predict where they are going. You don’t have to lead at all with hitscan really, you track instead.

So you can use the practice range to your benefit here with Genji, because you just need to learn the speed of the shuriken and how far you need to lead. Go practice leading the bots that walk around. Since they’re predictable, you can really concentrate on the speed vs distance thing. Do it from various ranges so you can learn to ‘feel’ the difference in how early you have to fire. Once you have that down, you will find it a lot easier to hit people with Genji’s shurikens from various ranges.

A caveat here: I’m actually a terrible Genji in every way BUT accuracy. I can ping people like crazy with his primary fire, but I can’t pull off a dragonblade for crap, so I only play him in QP nowadays lol. But I DO play projectile heroes almost exclusively, and the leading and knowing speed/travel time for various ranges is the same with all projectile heroes.

Just trading your dash for her cooldowns is a massive victory. Get hit by the nade, dodge the sleep, dash away. You win the resource war.

this is actually a really great point too.

If ana’s distracted defending herself, she’s not healing her team. Just keeping her busy during the team fight can be a huge advantage for your team, since the main healer on the enemy’s team isn’t healing. Really no need to finish her off as long as you accomplish this.

Despite what everyone says (this is coming from a previous high masters genji main on multiple accs, stopped playing a few months ago.) If an Ana is good or even god forbid better than you its absolute hell to deal with one. Her hitbox is extrememly tiny and if she has abilities avalible while strafing there is nearly no way to duel her without wasting time and letting the rest of her team kill you. The best way to deal with one is to listen to sound queues and spy on her from high ground to see if she used her nade. After that your best bet is to quickly execute her by climbing down to her and doing the m2+melee animation cancel then dashing to finish her off. The reason you dont engage with the dash is cause if you screw up there is only a tiny chance that you are getting away alive. If you are certain she is gonna die shift on to her and use the other one to escape. I recommend relatively high sense so you can do what is called a ghost dash by cancelling the animation frame where you stand still after a dash so you dont get ccd before you use it. However this needs heavy practice and mechanical skill so dont feel discouraged if you fail to do it and die. Even I only managed to pull it off like 70% of the time. Also when using blade dont dash into the sky or straight to her cause she can predict your movement easier when you are mid-air doing the ult start animation. When you dash to her quickly turn to her and deflect. Most Anas at relatively low elo panic and instantly try to sleep you so use this to your advantage. Against a good ana tho you may want to wait it out before she uses it to blade or dash straight into her hitbox before she can sleep you, forcing her to panick. However against REALLY good anas they dont panic at all and turn around to 360 sleep you. When verisng these anas just wait for them to use it or try to strafe and crouch spam as much as you can to avoid getting slept.
Dont forget to poke her with m1 as much as you can before going in for the execution tho. But keep in mind there are situations where you dont want to do this since it can alarm her teammates. Genjis primary has a very distinct sound and if anyone on the enemy hears it on high elo you bet the lucio or zen or whatever is gonna instantly rush to her side.

Thanks for the detailed input! Ghost dashing is by far one of my favorite things to pull off, but that’s probably where I get to greedy and get in trouble. Plenty of times have I dashed in thinking I’d secure the kill and nothing would happen and be left there to die…definitely some laughable moments.
Frankly, that might be my problem is that I think I can dash in and get that quick M2+melee combo, but doesn’t quite workout as intended. Honestly, I just need to put these tips into practice and keep at it. .
Thanks again everyone for the input!!

Yeah the combos are vey mechanically demanding and it just makes me even madder when some rando on the forums says stuff like “gEnjİ BrAiNdEaD uNdoDgAbLe m2”. I recommend practicing on ana bots to flick m2 + melee. Use dash if you are certain the enemy doesnt have any burst healing and they are sufficently low (like 2 bars left) Jumping makes your m2 easier to hit and headshot since the enemy hitboxes are squashed when looking them top down. Good luck on your improvements, hope to see you in masters someday!
