Gamemode: Demolition

This idea is actually based on the PvE gamemodes of Uprising and Junkenstein, meaning that you have to protect something that has health, and then the enemy team has to damage it.

This gamemode takes place on control maps, as well as the CTF map of Ayutthaya.

I think it could be an “official” gamemode, meaning it’s not just limited to Arcade. It can be played competitively.

Here’s how I envision it working:

Each team gets 3 generators on their side of the map, which have to be defended. If all 3 are destroyed, you lose the round. (maybe some maps are not big enough for 3 generators, so then 2?)
The matches are played in rounds, with “best of 3”, similar to control maps.

  • Generators have 500 health, 500 armor, and 1000 shield points.
  • Generator rooms have barriers in the doorways, or if the generator is in the open: there is a bubble barrier (about winston shield size) around it. Neither the friendly nor enemy team can shoot through the barriers at any time, and the barriers have infinite hitpoints. This is to prevent long-range attacks on the generator.
  • Generators can not be repaired/healed by players. However the shield hp will self-regenerate when the generator has not taken damage for 3 seconds. Obviously this won’t happen if the generator is destroyed entirely.
  • Damaging generator health/armor awards ult charge, but damaging the shield pool does not award ult charge (kinda like Hammond’s adaptive shield)
  • Rounds last 5 minutes. At the end of 5 minutes, the team that has the most generators alive will win. If both teams have equal generators alive, then non-shield hitpoints are taken into account: the one with the most hitpoints will win. If both teams are tied in that as well, then the round enters Sudden Death overtime: players will not longer respawn upon elimination and generators take 500% increased damage. First team to eliminate the enemy players or destroy the generator(s) wins the round.

I think adding a new gamemode is very interesting and something that is sorely needed to decrease player retention.
and something like this would be very MOBA-like, but at the same time it would, I believe, fit into the OW universe and gameplay.
I don’t think the additional mechanics would be extremely hard to implement, as most of the stuff is already used in the game, but just used differently in this proposal.

I think it would be even more interesting if we could combine this gamemode with slightly larger teams (8v8 or 10v10 would work extremely well here… same for CTF by the way)

The downside of the additional gamemode would be that certain balance decisions now also have to take this mode into account.

I think a Domination game mode would fit better.

You have 3 control points on the map. When you capture a control point, your team starts collecting points.

Kind of like control but with 3 points to capture at once instead of just 1. So you’ll have to split up your team accordingly.
If your team has 2 points captured and the enemy team only one, your team gets points faster.
First team to 200 , wins.

Another fun game mode is “Protect the V.I.P.”
One player is the V.I.P. the other team has to kill the VIP a set number of times.

If your team manager to protect the VIP, then you win.
If the enemy team gets the set number of kills on the VIP , then they win.

Although I would like more game modes added to quick play and competitive, I don’t see this one being added. As much as I want it to be added, anything even remotely CTF-like won’t be added to qp/comp.

This does however sound like a fun arcade mode, hopefully something to replace CTF. CTF works as an event-specific mode, but I think this would be a good mode to be in the permanent arcade rotation.

Good ideas, here’s hoping we see something similar.

This seems like a cheese variation of 2cp and I can see it being insanely unpopular because of it sry

I think this gamemode actually favors attackers. You can defend, but you have only 6 people, so that is an average of 2 people per generator. If you are bunkering, you are not attacking. Attackers can then send in 6 people for 1 generator, and in general you do win a 6v2 battle.

Please do stay on-topic and discuss the idea in the OP, don’t hijack this thread with a completely different idea

That’s what I fear too, but I hope that my idea is different enough compared to CTF.

CTF required a lot of unique mechanics to make it balanced and is VERY different compared to the other gamemodes because of it. But I do like the gameplay difficulty of attacking and defending at the same time.

I think my idea is relatively “vanilla” in that regard. You don’t need to escort a flag, there are no anti-mobility restrictions, etc.

This sounds like who ever has the better bastion and junkrat wins

What if this player lets the enemy to kill him?. It won’t be fun anymore.

That last one soumds similar to the rainmaker mode in Splatoon 2. Except there you have to capture a weapon first.

Also, in the OP it’s said that barriers would be around the generators, with infinite HP? How would you ever get to the generators in the first place, then?
