Game using 100% CPU when starting up

I started having this issue shortly after the game launched where the game would be laggy and overall perform really bad for some time until it just sorts it self out.

Using MSI Afterburner performance overlay i noticed that almost every time i load up the game, my CPU is pegged at 100% usage across all cores. After couple of minutes it drops down to normal usage but its kinda annoying i have to wait 10 minutes for the game to do its thing every time i want to play.

I had 2 CPUs exibit the same issue, a Ryzen 5 2600x and a Ryzen 7 5700x. They both get pegged at 100% usage for few minutes upon loading up the game then drop to ~10% usage in the menu so its not a thing of the chip just being weak.

I tried changing around settings and nothing changed, it still does it regardless. My FPS is locked in menu to 60 and ingame to 70 (i have a 75 hz monitor), so its not the cpu just rendering extra frames.

My only guess is that the game has some shader caching system in place when it boots up, something similar with the likes of newer CoD games, Hogwarts Legacy etc but i havent found anything online about OW having something like that, and just looking up this issue online just gave me results to get better performance on low end hardware which isnt the problem here

What you want to watch is which specific processes are consuming so much CPU. Using a program like Process Explorer can give you a lot more detailed information. I am willing to bet that your CPU is getting pegged due to at least 2 processes during that 10 minute window. Furthering the bet, it probably has something to do with a on-access virus scanner, high IO for swap space (kernal CPU time), etc.

It was just the Overwatch process hogging the CPU, it does that almost every time i launch the game. I tried turning off all anti virus software, and other apps that could run continously and it all resulted the same. I have the same issue with apex legends and so far i havent found a fix. It happens on both Windows 11 and 10, and in the meantime Windows 11 was reinstalled

Dang, sucks man. I would have to sit at the PC to find the core issue.

same issue here since the game launched… sometimes after 5 minutes the game crash,
specs: ryzen 5 2600 stock
a320-sh2
32gb ram 3200mhz
rx 6600m
game is on ssd nvme

I noticed the ram slowly fill until the game turn back to low cpu usage…
sorry if I wrote something wrong…

Could be due to a shader compilation bug I encountered.

Try using the command line argument “–tank_WorkerThreadCount x” without the commas where x is the number of physical NOT logical cores of your CPU.

If using an AMD GPU reset shader cache then reboot your system and launch the game and wait 5-10 minutes for shaders to finish compiling (check using Task Manager), once shaders have finished compiling close then relaunch the game and see if shaders compile again.

If shaders are still compiling try disabling SMT (Simultaneous multithreading) in the BIOS but this will prevent you from sleeping your PC alternatively use the program Process Lasso to disable SMT for just the Overwatch process.
