Game sensitivity vs mouse dpi settings

I play with pretty low sensitivity and a huge mousepad.
My game sensitivity is set to 3 and my mouse usually set to 800 (I can raise it to 1000 and 1200 if aim is not my priority). So my eDPI is 2400-3000-3600. I also enabled the mouse precision option in the game settings.

Now, I see a lot of players have pretty high game sensitivity (like 8) and lower mouse dpi (like 400). I have often read that higher game sensitivity can make you skip some pixels so it should be kept pretty low if you have a good mouse, so I’m surprised to see some very good players have a high game sensitivity.

After years I haven’t understood if, for the same eDPI, it’s better to have higher game sensitivity and lower mouse dpi or viceversa.

Does anyone have a proven explanation of what is better?

I mean I guess it depends if you use arm or wrist and what grip. Pixel skipping is not that big of an issue due to the distances usually combat takes place in. You also dont need to “draw” any recoil pattern accurately so that kind of precision is not required.

On the other hand you will have to do swift turns and will target enemies jumping high distances. Most heroes that need precision will have ADS and depending on the hero, the hitboxes will be so generous that it will make a higher sens yield more value.

I have like 6 with 800 DPI and its “medium” some people have it faster. You need that in Apex and OW, not so much on Valorant or CSGO.

Well in my case my aim definitely gets worse with higher eDPI.

I find that 2400 eDPI is what works best for me when I use Hanzo, Ashe or Ana, higher eDPI up to 3000 for others is definitely the maximum I can handle before my aim and tracking get worse (I don’t play Rein or Brig).

My question is if it would be better for some reason to have like:

Game sensitivity: 6
Mouse dpi: 400
eDPI: 2400

Than my actual:

Game sensitivity: 3
Mouse dpi: 800
eDPI: 2400

The only reason you’d want to use values lower than X on your mouse is if in-game sens stopped at a certain value.

Minimum in-game sens for Overwatch for a long time was capped at 1. So if you wanted an e-dpi of 800 you’d have to change your mouse dpi. You couldn’t have say 1600 mouse dpi and in-game 0.5.

Also low dpi values ON THE MOUSE introduce additional sensor latency so more is actually better for the most part.

Lowering the DPI makes no sense. 800 is pretty standard, but you should increase ingame sens, even if you use arms. Mostly because you can still micro adjust, but if Genjis jump your head, GL with low sens.

Generally it’s better to have higher DPI and lower sens. I play with 1600@2, for most heroes. Keeping your DPI at a multiple of 400 is also recommended as that’s what most sensors use natively.

Pixel skipping is basically not an issue anymore, but the best way to avoid it is having higher DPI. I run 800 myself and don’t have any problems.

I used to have a very low edpi, lower than yours but decided to go higher and nearly doubled my in game sense. Feels like I was using low sens to compensate for bad control so I want to go high and learn better control.

It depends on the hero. If you’re playing Quake and have hyper mobility and need to get around the map in 10 seconds, then you need high sens. If you’re playing CSGO, you need to low sens to make a single flick to a head shot. I don’t think anyone is going to take away from Toxjc or Niko as aimers, despite their setups being complete opposites. If you want to see something hilarious though, look up Toxjc’s keybindings.

OW seems to be somewhere in the middle. Play what you’re comfortable with, and what works best for the characters you play. There is no definite best sens. If you can play Widow with 12,000 esens, more power to you.

It seems like the average for most good players hovers around 3500 though.

Well I think the best sens is very personal and depends on your play style and what you are comfortable with. I’m definitely not saying low or high sens is better. What IS better is that the sens you use makes you play better.

Just wondering about the game sensitivity vs mouse dpi setting.

It’s very interesting that lower game sensitivity should be better, it’s what I thought too (thanks for the video about the latency at lower dpi).

I was watching kephrii on twitch the other day and I saw he had a game sensitivity of 8 with 400 mouse dpi and really made me wonder why… if for example game sensitivity 2 and 1600 dpi would be better?

Not true at all? If someone has a small space for your mouse and they’re on 3 800 then they’ll be lifting the mouse all the time

If anyone needs help with their Sensitivity please watch this video

Don’t set your sensitivity low just because you have a “good mouse” :sob:

also make sure to turn off enhance pointer precision in mouse pointer options in windows

If you have a “good mouse”, one of those that reaches high dpi and has a good sensor, why do you need to choose high game sensitivity instead of high mouse dpi??? This is the question.
Why should you need space to move your mouse if you can set up a higher dpi if you have a small desk or a small mousepad?

Of course if you have a mouse that has limited dpi you will definitely opt for higher game sensitivity.
I think you didn’t read carefully that the post is about game sensitivity vs mouse dpi.

oh I see mb I stopped reading after the middle paragraph if I’m honest

uhm personally I have a logitech superlight pro and it doesn’t even have a DPI button on the mouse so I just stick to 800 dpi otherwise the mouse is moving way too fast when not on a game :woman_standing:

(btw don’t get a logitech superlight pro, I regret not getting another viper it’s a downgrade, and feels cheaper and icky and costs more too oh and the side buttons stick out more and feel squishy… idk how ppl are praising this mouse when it’s legitimate a downgrade lol oh and of course removed feature such as… DPI button on the bottom lol so u have to drop one of your mouse keybinds if you want to have DPI button)

High mouse DPI also affects using the mouse outside the game, like using menus or Windows. If you want to create a specific profile just to play Overwatch and only use the high DPI mode when you’re playing the game in-focus, go wild, but I’m extremely lazy.

For reference, the “correct” non-skipping settings I should be using for my cm/360 are in-game 3, 8000 DPI. I use in-game 10, 1200 DPI so I can actually use my mouse.
