Hello,
i have played the last time 3 days ago, where everything worked as expected.
Yesterday, after an update, i started having problems with starting the game.
When i click on “play” it gives me an error box popping up
“Unhandled exception”
X “An unexpected error occured.”
“[ OK ]”
I tried to start the game from the launcher, tried it also without the launcher.
Updated my drivers, restarted my pc, closed all open programs and processes, removed the overwatch folder manually and reinstalled, uninstalled and reinstalled, tried again after windows updates. Tried from an installation on an external harddrive.
Since yesterday it wont start. There are no windows log in the event viewer about any crashes. When this popup happens a crash file is created but i cant read it.
I would be happy about any ideas of things to try/any feedback.
If you need further information for this, please let me know.

My friend experiences the same problem. We have also tried all the things mentioned above, with no luck. Would be nice to know if it’s corrupted update or something in users own system that causes this problem.

Like you, I have updated as much as I could, I have been talking to my friends about ideas, but unfortunately none is useful. We thought about the idea of formatting my pc, but it’s relatively new so I don’t think that’s a problem either. Until then I will have to wait for them to take out a new update or repair the bug that has been bothering us all.
I appreciate your answer, thanks.

any info for this? having same issues here
edit: mine auto solved. it just went away
Nope. We have extended our measures, and on top of the above mentioned we have;
- CMD ipconfig/flushdns and sfc/scannow
- Enabled and disabled VSync from Nvidia App
- Uninstalled both OW and Battle.net and installed OW from Steam
- Using phone shared data plan instead of the usual router
Not even sure if there is everything. Nothing seems to work, so I’m more and more convinced that this is a Blizzard issue, not an user issue.
This just happend to me game was runing better than ever compared to the last 4 months now an 1h after i updated i get (unexpected error) never seen this screen before I shutsown the game and battlenet instantly
Just read your post about it. It’s a different error. You had your game open and it crashed, people on this thread can’t even get the game to open before it crashes.
That’s the thing i can only open it i get the same shutdown again if i press play just shosw a huge warning sighn and that i need to contact blizzard with a error code bit the bar is empty
Yeah, you still get further than the rest of us. Also our error was not “Unexpected error”, our error is “Unhandled exception”, meaning it doesn’t even try to start the game. In your case “Scan and repair” could solve the problem. Found next to the “Play” button.
Not sure if its helpful to anyone, but toggling on the run as administrator setting in Overwatch2.exe properties fix this issue for me. That said, as far as I know, Overwatch shouldn’t need to run as administrator and has not needed to in the past. Did something change?
The same problem still persist. Nothing that has been mentioned here or on other forums has helped. Any chance that Blizzard could fix this in a reasonable time?
I’m receiving the same error. Scan and repair did nothing to address the issue.
On December 25th 2024, this issue persists on my end still. I have to this point updated graphic drivers, reinstalled visual c++, launched the game from both the steam library as well as the main exe with and without administrator privileges/fullscreen optimizations/compatibility mode, disabled all overlays on all softwares (discord, nvidia, steam, etc.) that had any appearing over the game, tried different launch options on steam, verified integrity of files, completely deleted and reinstalled the game, refreshed steam’s download cache, moved the installation folder to a different ssd, checked firewall settings and both private and public settings are on for overwatch, killed all background services that could go into conflict with the game, restarted my pc, terminated any vpn app and several other solutions that I can’t even recall anymore. Nothing works. Minimum requirements are well met with 16gb ddr5, 3050m and i5-12450h, I had no issue playing the game due to personal pc specifications prior to this. Uninstalled the MINA server selector well before I had this issue and before the aforementioned software stopped working. I cannot for the life of me understand what is causing the game to be completely unplayable, unlaunchable and unfixable. The one time I want to play a game I got tired of, this situation is forcing me to play anything else. Whether it’s a blessing in disguise or another issue blizzard is overlooking and losing a large part of their decreasing playerbase over, it’s embarrassing that they have still not come up with a fix for it or informed their players of any viable solution to be able to play their own product after a whole month. I’m guessing it’s a sign that I should get off the game for good.
Welcome to the club. “Luckily” I’m here uplifting this thread in behalf of my friend, but we both are losing our minds over this. We have accepted that this is Blizzard problem, not user based. The only thing we can do is hope that someone at Blizzard end takes a note and does something for this.
Hi, I have managed to solve both issues with the game not launching and failing to log into the game (the latter I fixed today and I was an absolute idiot wondering what the issue was to begin with).
What helped me was going into cmd as admin, “ipconfig /release” , “ipconfig /flushdns” , “ipconfig /renew” , “netsh int ip reset” , then IMMEDIATELY restarted my pc and only tried launching overwatch afterwards. I don’t really know what the issue was, but it started launching after those steps.
The other issue I had was… the MINA server selector. I legitimately forgot to unblock the rest of the ip addresses for the overwatch servers and couldn’t even log in. Reinstalled it and unblocked all connections, so it’s all good now.
Maybe the ip resetting thing will help out someone else out here, if it’s the actual solution to the problem and it didn’t fix itself on its own which I highly doubt it did
