Game Crashes On Launch

I posted this on a similar topic, yesterday, but have not seen a response. I noticed other ‘crash’ reports have been looked at since, so I will make a thread for my own issue. Here is what I wrote:

I took a break for about a month and tried playing again tonight. Every time I load up Overwatch, my PC crashes and goes to a blue screen before restarting.

This has never happened to me before, so I am not sure what the problem is. I also have never added any code to the forums, so I will try my best.

On the same note, after my issue, I deleted/reinstalled both battle net/blizzard launcher and the Overwatch game. I scanned and repaired the game multiple times too along with resetting in-game options to default. My Windows is updated, CPU, GPU, and drivers as well. I ran a defragment and cleaned out my disks.

I have tested several other games that I play and only have this issue with Overwatch.

The first few times the PC crashed, the blizzard launcher also asked me to relocate my saved games. After a few crashes, the launcher did not recognize the saved folder (thus the re-download/install).

Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds like the Bnet app doesn’t have the correct permissions for your hard drive, or the hard drive itself is starting to fail. You’re missing the error report from the end of your dxdiag. Also, what error code is on the blue screen? This will really help speed up diagnosing your issue.

I do not receive a prompt for permissions, as I would for new updates/new games. Overwatch has always had permissions to play/use voice in the past. Overwatch appears to load, but then the crash occurs. I get maybe 3s into the Blizzard logo (video, since I re-downloaded) before the blue screen. A few times, there was no blue screen, just a black screen.

I tried a few more times later on and noticed the BNet launcher only ‘randomly’ losing file location to saved games after the crash/reset. Sometimes I would have to remap, sometimes I didn’t.

The hard drive also houses all my other Blizzard games and continues to run them without error. I have had Overwatch for a while, but this issue never has happened. I deleted BNet/Overwatch and started fresh just to be sure. The last time I had played was probably a little over a month ago. There was an update to Overwatch during this break.

As for the dxdiag, I followed the instructions as per Blue forum post. I am not sure what else would be on it. It saved as a notepad file and I sent full info. Is there another location to find this ‘error report’?

As for the crash/blue screen. The screen is up for maybe 2s before restarting my pc. I am not sure where to look for the ‘error code’, but I can try. Is there a location on the pc where it would save the error instead?

Pasting the DxDiag file without wrapping between [code][/code] can cause portions of the file to disappear. Also the error section that Nicole mentions may not be there if DirectX didn’t log any errors (which is common for hard crashes). Alternatively you can also post the DxDiag file to PasteBin and provide the link here:

  1. Go to www.pastebin.com
  2. In the open field paste your DxDiag there and click “Create New Paste” (Please note you are not required to create an account on that website and your file will remain there temporarily for a few days.)
  3. Once created paste the link in your reply. Note if you are not permitted to post links, please wrap the contents between two tick marks like so:

I tried the pastebin method, but when I create a paste, it says I exceed the limit.

Today I uninstalled and reinstalled my GPU drivers and at this point, have re downloaded Overwatch maybe 4 or 5 times.

Sometimes I get a blue screen and sometimes I get a black screen followed by a reset in both cases. When I launch the Blizzard launcher and try to remap the recently downloaded Overwatch, it has been telling me that I do not have the correct version in the folder. I have launched the game without using the launcher and I still crash.

A friend of mine said that his Overwatch video settings were changed automatically to Ultra recently. If this is so, maybe it is the reason why the game crashes my pc? I have tried ultra settings before and this did not crash my pc, but I do not play on those settings. I could not locate an in-game file in the recently downloaded Overwatch folder so as to turn down the video settings.

Once again, this game has always worked for me and I have not changed any hardware/software on my pc. Other games I play are Destiny 2, HotS, WoW, Resident Evil 7, and Fall Out 4. All these games have been tested and they all still work fine. I know there was an Overwatch update recently and my only current guess is maybe my PC specs might conflict with the update.

I appreciate everyone’s help on this matter, but I am getting burned out. I have spent way to much time on this over the last few days and have come up with no solutions.

Edit: Oh one more thing before I give up, I tried 2 different hard drives for the download, both did the same. One was a HDD and the other SSD.

This error means one of your CPU cores or your GPU is failing to communicate with the operating system. It could be that your driver reinstall wasn’t clean (need to use a utility like DDU), or that CPU or GPU has damage from overclocking or overheating. It could also mean that your bios needs to be updated (this has been a common trend in posts here lately).

I think Overwatch is more taxing than your other games and that’s why you’re seeing the error. You can Google the first set of numbers in the error and you’ll see lots of how-tos for fixing the issue, but ultimately, it’s related to your hardware, and not a fault of the Overwatch app itself.
