Has anyone ever thought about what Gabriel did before he joined, well, basically everything? Like, what do you think his background was like that had him join the military, SEP etc etc?

He was senior officer and decorated veteran at time, when he was chosen for SEP. It was honor for them, I believe, and Reyes is ambitious man.
Let’s see, if we will get any family and childhood background for him, because only thing we know for sure that he is wanted to join army badly. In USA he could be looking for Army option because, for example, his family could not afford proper education for him, or he just needed money.

I’d been under the impression that Gabriel Reyes was a senior military officer to Jack.
Jack joined the military at 18 and is around three years younger than Reyes.
I’d assume that would imply that Reyes joined around 18 too for him to have seniority already.
My guess would be Reyes was a military brat.

I think it was either “parents from Army” or money thing. I mean, at Haloween spray his childhood costume is just mask, it’s damn cheap.

He was probably a commander of a force and then he got kicked out of overwatch for doing some non-healthy actions and then he got mutated (probably by Moira) which made him like how he is now (reaper) and he hates mercy because she wasted her Rez on genji and not the edge lord (no pun intended.)
Like childhood? Maybe following in family footsteps or joined because he wanted too and always wanted to be a soldier. Who knows?

He seems like the type of jerk that wears sunglasses after sunset. He was also raised in LA. What if his parents were YouTubers.

I have this BIG headcanon: Gabriel’s father was in the army but died when Gabe was only 7-8 years old. Life became harder for him and his mother, they barely had money and he never did well in school. His mother was depressed and didn’t know what to do anymore, but she kept on trying to keep her and her son alive. Back to Gabriel now, he was an agressive teen and even murdered some people out of frustration (wow the edge, but he had to do it to save some people) the police was after him, his mother didn’t want to do anything with him, and he was left alone now (18-19 years old). He decided to join the military, since the Omnic crisis was about to start and he had nowhere else to go to. The first ten years or so, he was harsh against his teammates and didn’t even care about them, but that changed later in the SEP.

Being that he’s a hispanic man who grew up in LA, it’s safe to say that he had a large family, and he ended up going into the military because it paid well and the army preys upon low income families like that with older siblings who don’t have funds to get to college or other vocational schools with promises of making $$ to send back to family.
Hispanic families like his are very tight knit, and often have several generations living in one household, or close by. So he was likely joining to provide for his family at first. But Reyes is a tactical genius so he found his calling in the military, and ended up making a career out of it, and once he was in the SEP it was sort of a no going back point.
Then the war happened.
