Frustrating PC problem

Hi.

I just had the most amazing Game with Zarya I think I will ever have.

Watchpoint gibraltar on attack.
The enemy team was feeding me so hard i was on constant 100% energy, i think my average was 80-something.

we pushed throught he checkpoints no problem, noone died, we jsut trainplowed them.

on the last checkpoint they managed to stall us for qutie a bit and i managed to get TWO gravs off in less then 90 secs.

And just 5 seconds after the 2nd grav,

My Pc crashed.

I even did a solo quintuple in one of my surges, which would have surely been POTG, and the team was very very nice, nice comms and everything.

And on top of that I cant level up with endorsements.

I’m currently lvl 3 and i’m getting between 3-6 endorsements per match. I should be well well over lvl 4 by now, but because my PC crashes every now and then I, of course, loose endorsements.

Since a couple of weeks my PC “crashes” randomly. This can happen on the desktop, youtube, in games, everywhere, anytime.

but there is no error message, no bluescreen, not even an error message in the log files after a restart.

It just… turns off.
as if someone would pull the plug. Black screen, dead.
And then it instantly restarts no problem 8i have it set up in the bios so that after a power fault it remembers its last state)

and i don’t know where the problem is.
it cant be software wise, since i formated my whole PC and installed win10 freshly because of these crashes, and even with no programs this happened so it must be a hardware fault…

I’m planning to buy a new mobo, cpu and ram soon, i want to keep my gpu and psu.

but i suspect it might be either the psu (which is a corsair with 10 years warrantly, bought 2 years ago), or something funky with the mainboard.

sigh

I’ve searched the whole internet, but noone seems to have had any problem like that… ever.

Guess i’ll have to live with the constant fear of my pc crashing whatever I’m doing.

If you’re already contemplating buying a new board, it may be worth trying to flash the bios as well, jic. Probably not that, but it’s something to keep in mind before dumping money into a nearly full new build.

Usually hardware failures are more definite. Something tends to short, burn, or die. Generally no real question on it.

Are you able to purposefully repeat the crash at all?

Nope. i have no idea if its connected to anything.
Sometimes it doesnt happen for a week, then it happenes 4 times a day, maybe after 4 hours of gaming or maybe just 3 mins after booting up on the desktop.

Same thing happend to me. Its a power supply problem.

Those things don’t last forever anymore. A person doesn’t need a FANCY power supply, but they still need to buy a name brand. Ive been running with EVGA’s now for awhile, with LESS failure issues. They run smooth and have a good Sin wave to them for power output. You dont see the 5v side fluctuate heavily. Generally when those types of crashes occur. its the 5v rail that causes a hard crash. The 12v side isn’t so fussy.

As someone whom did this for quite a few years, before the economy tanked. Those 5v rails can TRASH a nice computer. So when it occurs. Your best bet is to NOT restart the system after every crash. As it is TRASHING your board. If it does it a couple of times. Just take the power supply OUT and dump it.

Capacitors manufactured in Japan work best. They do an amazing job over there on CAPS. I’d say that 750w really can get anyone by now these days. There is no need for 900w+ of power. A single graphics card willl never use that, and most games don’t even use SLI anymore.

You can tru to run GPU stress test and CPU stress test at same time (just start GPU test first, because when you start CPU test pc gets really slow). When both tests are running both parts use 100% power and if your power supply is too small your pc just crashes, because not enough power.

I did that and i ahve way enouh power. i’m running a fx6300 at 92 watts (i believe)
And a 1070 amp edition (overclocked) at 400 something.

My Psu is the corsair RM750. I made a request to send it back to them and i could get a new one even, but my PC is bolted INSIDE my wall so its impossible to get all cables out without alot of trouble. And they want the cables.

I said them this and they said i can take out as many cables as i can and send it in but i don’t have a replacement Power supply and i really don’t wanna wait 2-3 weeks to get it back.

Troubleshooting stuff like this is long process and the forums will only be able to do so much for you. I’ve had one problem with my machine and it used to lock up randomly, sound locked and stuttering (ya know…that awful sound that locks up as soon as you get BSOD) and then it would shut down.

It was found to be an overheating issue. I reapplied thermal paste (first time in 4 years since the machine was built) and the issue disappeared and we are back to new again.

It could be a faulty mother board…it could be an overheating GPU, it could be an overheating CPU, it could be a faulty power supply.

Typically, in my experience, when a machine just shuts off like that, with no BSOD, there is a pretty bad fault happening. Check PSU, CPU or GPU.

if your pc crashes even on youtube is not a problem exclusive to OW, you need to start measuring temperatures on idle (when the system is not doing anything) and under heavy load (like when you play OW) then check the values you have vs the values you are supposed to have according benchmarks. Room temperature may be affecting if it’s too hot or too cold. try connecting your computer directly to the wall, sometimes a faulty power strip can cause random issues like this.

Lvl 4 decays pretty fast. I have been back down to 3 at least 3 times now.

That would be too easy. It’s not the temperature either. My whole pc is water cooled in a custom loop, my gpu caps out at 50 degrees and cpu at 60.

Oh THAT is actually interesting.
I’m using 2 master slave powe strips.

I’ll give that a try. But don’t get my hopes up.

Actually, I had this issue too!

Apparently my cpu had been overheating. Installing a fan in the top, moving my pc off the floor, and blowing it out with compressed air every month or so seems to fix the issue completely.

If you want to be sure that it’s an overheating issue before taking any action, I’d suggest getting HWMonitor. It’s what i use to make sure my pc’s not getting too hot anymore.

I know that PC turns off by itself whenever the CPU overheats, but idk if it would restart because of it. Maybe that’s the problem. There is thermal paste you can get for cpu to prevent this, and fans. Some people have the whole PC case open and an actual big fan pointed at the open PC to keep it cool, or liquid cooling. Also cpu and graphics cards tend to overheat easily when they’re filled/covered with dust, so you should get a 2$ can of air and regularly blow that dust out.

When was the last time you cleaned dust out of your computer with compressed air?

Most computers will automatically turn themselves off when they reach a certain heat threshold to avoid any serious hardware damage.

I get SO many people coming to me who have their computers completely caked with dust that outright refuse to believe their crashing was from overheating isuses and I’d just blow out their computer and their problem was fixed.

Ok guys hey.

I’ll say it more clearly:

My pc is custom build. It’s bolted to the wall in a completely open show case. With just a glass panel on front. It’s water cooled. I’m monitoring temperatures all the time. I even have displays showing them so I don’t even need a program to look at them.

I know how to pc.

I can check again if these sensors may be faulty and the temperature isn’t displayed correctly but the cooling is not the problem here.

Depends on the computer

Some computers will instantly turn off when they’re overheating, some will restart and so on

Let’s just assume my cpu overheats. Should there be an error message in a log file somewhere stating that this happened?

Seems like if a PC restarts over and over from overheating, that’s a fire hazard of some sort because a lot of people keep their PC running unattended for long periods of time.

Ok so to-do list is:

-remove power strips
-carefully monitor temperatures with 2-3 different programs To avoid errors
-re-apply thermal paste to the cpu anyways

It sounds like a problem with power. Maybe it’s a bad power supply, or maybe the problem is not in the PC at all. Maybe it’s the voltage. I’m sorry that I can’t be any more helpful.
