Lekker gewerkt pik! translation: good job, …uh…friend!
I was always very skeptic about the Dutch language sounding badass but you pulled it off. I love it. It’s so strange to hear your own language in-game. Super fun. Looking forward for more content!
Blizzard has done an amazing job with the voice actors for this game. While yes I would love to have Terry Crews as DF, the one they got does give a sense of power and leadership.
Actually “mij” is the formal version of “me” (pronounced: “muh”). So in The Netherlands, “mij” is often used when trying to sound somewhat intelligent or professional. Like in a job application. Or when you’re a mad scientist. Of course.
Most people in The Netherlands agree though that Dutch isn’t a sexy language. It’s not suave. It does not roll over the tongue like French does. It’s rough and gritty. It’s silly, really. Dutch is really silly.
Some voicelines (not 100% accurate, but from what I can recall) like “we gaan dat varkentje eens wassen” is a biiiiit too much and feels cringy, even for Dutch people. It’s like a Dutch saying, literally meaning “We’re going to wash that pig”. Though it’s not like the literal translation feels any different to Dutch people. When we say “we gaan dat varkentje eens wassen” what we mean is “Let’s get that job done”. But as I said, the literal translation sounds just as silly to the Dutch.
Though since he’s supposed to be crazy, they freaking made it work. That’s truly unbelievable to me. I’ve always speculated with my brother that the Dutch Overwatch hero should be some kind of redbeard-pirate with a chain cutlass or something since the Dutch have history with the seas.
I always felt like The Netherlands was being overlooked since we’re such a small country. Especially in media, we’re often are seen as “Orange people who like tulips and drugs” which is accurate, but we’re more than that. It’s cool that people actually think that the Dutch language sounds badass. Because I’ve always disliked my accent since my first language is Dutch.
On a sidenote, I love how Overwatch is also lowkey making mental health awareness. Schizophrenia or multi personality disorder is a serious thing to a lot of people and perhaps through reading/knowing about Sigma, people would become more openminded for these kinds of things.
That’s pretty awesome. I love Blizz tries to make the language feel as natural and accurate.
I was a bit worried when Sombra came out because of how different spanish sounds throughout spanish speaking countries, not only because of the accents but also the meaning of some words change and the coloquial “slang” is very different. So I was glad to see that she sounds authentically mexican, and uses mexican slang.
That’s pretty dope though lol. And well it sounds badass at least to me because it’s different, I don’t understand it at all lol, and because I speak spanish, I can kinda make out words in portuguese, italian, french so they’re not as “misterious” as dutch or german or swedish to me
