When using freesync premium should i enable vsync ingame?

freesync and gsync dont work if vsync is enabled so you have to turn it off in every game

Omg that makes sense now… on one of the games I play my screen was slightly flickering all the time and I didnt understand why and had to turn off freesync/gsync on my omen monitor to stop it whenever I play that game I just saw your post and opened that game and I had forgot to turn off vsync, tyvm

I don’t think this is true. I’m not sure about FreeSync, but the recommendation, at least as far as I’m aware, is to turn vsync on in the control panel for Gsync and off in game. You also need to have stable FPS in game. Google something like “Blur Busters vsync and Gsync”, without the quotes, obviously. I forget the exact reasoning, I think it’s maybe that it both gives the low latency of very high FPS while very minimal tearing, but whatever the case the article explains it and the consensus elsewhere seems to be that Blur Busters is on the money.

As for its shortcomings, G-SYNC is only as effective as the system it runs on. If the road is the system, G-SYNC is the suspension; the bumpier the road, the less it can compensate. But if set up properly, and run on a capable system, G-SYNC is the best, most flexible syncing solution available on Nvidia hardware, with no peer (V-SYNC OFF among them) in the sheer consistency of its frame delivery.

if you have 144hz monitor then cap ingame fps at 142
if you have 240hz monitor then cap ingame fps at 236
only use ingame frame cap

There seems to be some disagreement on this from my looking into it. Again, I use Gsync, so I’m not totally familiar with FreeSync, but the recommendation, at least according to a Reddit thread on this from about a year ago titled “Vsync ON or OFF with: G-Sync (FreeSync) + FPS cap with RTSS ? 1080p 75Hz, RTX 2080”, is to turn vsync on in the control panel along with FreeSync.

It seems like if you go back more than a year then the recommendation is to turn it off, which is similar to what happened with Gsync IIRC.

i have a 144hz freesync monitor, its been awhile since i’ve brushed up on the details but i remember the recommended settings is to always set vsync to off cause it interferes with it causing more screen tear or something along those lines

There seemed to be some initial confusion. A few years ago people recommended turning it off, but now, I’m guessing with the BB article being passed around and tested, people recommend turning vsync on in the control panel and off in game. Gsync and FreeSync are functionally the same from what I understand.

Just remember that vsync needs to be turned off in game or you’ll be increasing input lag quite a bit by increasing buffering. The Blur Busters article explains it well.

Yes, on officially supported “G-SYNC Compatible” FreeSync monitors (see Nvidia’s G-SYNC Monitors list, my recommendation to limit the FPS (a safe -3 minimum) below the max refresh rate, and to use G-SYNC + V-SYNC “On” to eliminate tearing 100% of the time, still applies

Additional explanation :

The answer is frametime variances.

“Frametime” denotes how long a single frame takes to render. “Framerate” is the totaled average of each frame’s render time within a one second period.

At 144Hz, a single frame takes 6.9ms to display (the number of which depends on the max refresh rate of the display, see here, so if the framerate is 144 per second, then the average frametime of 144 FPS is 6.9ms per frame.

In reality, however, frametime from frame to frame varies, so just because an average framerate of 144 per second has an average frametime of 6.9ms per frame, doesn’t mean all 144 of those frames in each second amount to an exact 6.9ms per; one frame could render in 10ms, the next could render in 6ms, but at the end of each second, enough will hit the 6.9ms render target to average 144 FPS per.

So what happens when just one of those 144 frames renders in, say, 6.8ms (146 FPS average) instead of 6.9ms (144 FPS average) at 144Hz? The affected frame becomes ready too early, and begins to scan itself into the current “scanout” cycle (the process that physically draws each frame, pixel by pixel, left to right, top to bottom on-screen) before the previous frame has a chance to fully display (a.k.a. tearing).

G-SYNC + V-SYNC “Off” allows these instances to occur, even within the G-SYNC range, whereas G-SYNC + V-SYNC “On” (what I call “frametime compensation” in this article) allows the module (with average framerates within the G-SYNC range) to time delivery of the affected frames to the start of the next scanout cycle, which lets the previous frame finish in the existing cycle, and thus prevents tearing in all instances.

And since G-SYNC + V-SYNC “On” only holds onto the affected frames for whatever time it takes the previous frame to complete its display, virtually no input lag is added; the only input lag advantage G-SYNC + V-SYNC “Off” has over G-SYNC + V-SYNC “On” is literally the tearing seen, nothing more.

don’t use RTSS or any frame cap app outside the game itself
or you will have massive latency
even the frame cap from Nvidia or AMD software it will add latency
always use ingame frame cap

i just switched vsync on in control panel and idk maybe its just me but the game feels smoother now i was able to zip through doors as hamster with ease when before i would bounce off the walls and whatnot all the time

Don’t know about Gsync, but for FreeSync the official recommendation is to turn Vsync on.
