Framerate issue 90-100% CPU usage

Hey there,
bought a new PC in march. I have a i9 9700F, and a RTX 2060
I play on Low settings, High texture quality, 75% render quality, with FPS set to custom, and I sat at between 299-300 FPS.
I haven’t played recently for a couple weeks, nor have I touched my computer after this last update im having issues. And my frame rates are sitting at 299-300FPS for only a few seconds as the match starts my frames were wonky sitting at 240 max, dropping down to like 100, and some times lower then that.

So I’ve tried several things to fix this after looking through forums, and nothing is working. I started off last night by Disabling Xbox game bar, and updating my GPU drivers, and resetting my video settings. This seemed to work and I was able to play a couple matches at my regular FPS. Then I tried again today, and it was wonky again. I updated windows, I reset my video settings, reset my computer, and still wonky. Now I Deleted Overwatch, re-installed. Set my FPS to display-based, and was sitting at a smooth 154FPS wasn’t getting 300FPS so I settled.
Now my frames are wonky again. Dropping down to 80, fps but staying closer to 120-154. And I checked Task manager and my CPU is running at 90%-100%. And it wasnt doing this before. My core cpu temp is at in game 60C so its not over heating and my GPU sits at around 70-80C.

I only use my computer for gaming, nothing else. I dont donwload anything other than games, and don’t hardly go on the web, cause I use my phone. Only thing I may do is check you-tube.

Did something happen with the recent updates that’s causing my CPU to max out? War-zone used to do this but lots of people had problems with war-zone.

I heard razer synapse or something of that sort causes serious fps issues in overwatch

Thats funny you mention it, because I downloaded it last time i played to change the lighting on my keyboard to go with my LED cooler master mousepad. How did you know thats what I did?

it’s just something that many people have issues with

So how do I go about fixing it? Delete it?

I’m not sure about that part, just wait a little bit for a MVP or higher to reply

just try uninstalling it

I found a post on reddit involving someone with FPS issue and Synapse and the support guy telling him to download Cortex: Game Booster. Should I really download another razer product?

no just uninstall synapse

It didnt work. Solid 150 frames. But it wont sit at 300 any more, inconsistant at 160-220FPS. And CPU still maxing at 100%. I dont have any dust or issues like that and its not really over heating if u consider 50-60C hot.

not sure then, youll need a mod to help you (or an MVP)

Your temperatures are not a problem and you’ve updated your Drivers and Windows so that part of the Troubleshooting is out of the way.

Now, there’s absolutely no reason for a CPU as powerful as yours (which is actually a tad bit more powerful than even my i7-8700K) to be anywhere close to 90% - 100% utilization on a GPU - heavy game like Overwatch. That’s probably where the problem lies.

So, as Troubleshooting, I would suggest you follow these steps:

  1. Set your Settings exactly like they were when you were actually getting almost 300FPS. Don’t forget to get your Display Resolution to that of your monitor’s and set VSync Off.
  2. Restart Overwatch and play a couple of matches. While playing open up Task Manager and see exactly which of your programs takes up all that CPU utilization (there’s a large probability your AntiVirus has been Scanning your system and has been making up from both your CPU and storage, therefore prolonging Overwatch load times as well). Write this software down in your reply if you can.
  3. Try to End as many of these Processes as you can and then check your FPS. Additionally, I would suggest you also press on the “Startup” Tab in Task Manager and Disable as many of your Startup Programs as you can.
  4. See if the problem is fixed. If not, then you would probably like to check your performance on other games as well and see if it has also diminished.
  5. As a final step, just look back to your activity during the past days and at any new program/driver/update you may have installed, or any setting you may have changed in general that may be the culprit here).

If none of the above works, then I’m afraid I can’t really help you until you give me a lead and you’ll have to contact either Blizzard or Intel support. As an ending note concerning PC performance, make sure that you have no more than one AntiVirus program installed (BitDefender is the best one for gaming PCs) at once. I would suggest you don’t keep a cleaner program installed at all times, but if you want one get CCleaner, disable it as a Startup program if possible and run an automatic Registry Check/Clean just to be sure. Finally, if you want to Trim your SSD or Defrag your HDD if you ever have any storage performance problems in the future you can go with iObit Smart Defrag, if you want a good Uninstaller program go with iObit Uninstaller and if you want to have all your Drivers updated go with iObit Driver Booster (this one may help with your current situation as well). All of this software has served me well, but of course proceed with your own risk for everything

Good luck and hope you fix your problem!

When you checked your temperatures, did you use an app like HWMonitor? This app will capture temperature spikes as well as the averages. Most apps that display the temps only show averages. The Overwatch UI only displays averages and is not the best tool for this job.

Also, with any tech post, make sure you include the info requested in the pinned threads. Although optimizing your fps isn’t an officially supported issue, the DxDiag still helps MVPs/community members with troubleshooting.

The Razer Synapse issue is also described in the pinned threads, but the symptoms here do not match that behavior.

Hey there,
Yes I used HWmonitor because I seen a post else were about using it. My average temps were 54C and highest spike was 66C.

Pastebin: QPVzGFZL

Also I played a round of OW and it was still averaging around 90-100% in competitive, and 60% when in skirmish with a few people in the lobby. Was getting 90-100 in Qplay Classic as well.

As for the previous post. I Dont have really anything that opens at start up. The only Anti virus I have is Norton and have had it from the beginning that I got the computer. And it has never been an issue. I honestly dont download other programs other then games. I Play fortnight rarely. And I play COD: Warzone, but that game runs 90-100% CPU as well. But that game has known issues to do that. It has gotten a little better and stable in recent patches.

The Dragon Center LightKeeper.exe and also the Nahimic sound suite are both showing errors. According to Google, LightKeeper is really tough on RAM and CPU.

So what do I need to do?

I’d recommend checking with those manufacturer’s websites for either updates or guides to disable them.

Noticed in the DragonCenter app that theres some Other Driver settings I need updated. Intel Chipset being one of them. Along with Mystic Light. Ill try updateing that and see what it does.

EDIT: Still hasnt fixed the CPU issue. Can run a steady 154 FPS But worried it will lag at somepoint again like last night. And Still cant do the 300FPS like I was

Can you post some screenshots of your HWMonitor? I’ll take a look, but like I said, we’re outside the stuff supported in the forum, and a place like Reddit might be your best bet for optimizing.

these are the results after a 300fps game, but my fps wasn’t dipping below 200. constantly inconsistent between 200-300
