Exactly as the title says, I run Overwatch and when entering a match the FPS counter in the top left corner says I have 60-70 FPS, considering the fact that I’m playing in a laptop with a Nvidia GeForce 840M, I can’t really complain about that amount of FPS, but once the attack comences and the teamfight begins, the FPS start going from 60 to 15, they get stuck in 15 for like 1 or 2 seconds and rise up back to 60, where they stay up there for another 1 or 2 seconds and then drop again to 15, this last the entire match until the POTG, which I can confortably see at 70 FPS. This drops are pretty annoying because they also cause the audio to glitch and it sounds like my headphones are going to explode. I’ve tried everything (or at least I think so, because honestly I’m tired of trying all the solutions I found and see how they do nothing) from deleting the cache, the High Precission Event Timer and even cleaning 200 GB of unused stuff from my laptop and nothing worked. If anyone knows what more should I try tell me please
PD: I play on the lowest settings.
PPD: I forgot to say that OW is the only game with these issue, other games like GTA V, Far Cry 4 Doom hits the 60 fps with the settings in medium or even high in the case of Far Cry 4.
Hi there, I’m a volunteer/fellow player, and I don’t work at Blizzard. Please include a DxDiag if you’d like members of the community to help you troubleshoot.
DxDiag instructions (click to expand/collapse)
- Press Windows Key + R.
- Type DxDiag and press Enter.
- In the DxDiag window, click Save All Information.
- Name the file “dxdiag” and click Save.
To add it to your reply here:
- Open the text file and copy all of the text.
- Paste the text in your reply.
- Highlight the pasted text and click </> on the post editor.
If your DxDiag does not fit in one message, you can post it on Pastebin.com and provide the hash code (the numbers/letters after the .com) in your reply.
Here’s the numbers after the .com on Pastebin: “uBw2NF4S”
PD: There are a few sentences in spanish, since it is the language I have configured in my laptop, but the important information is still in english.
Thanks for posting that AnoyingSans.
I would recommend manually checking for Windows updates (Go to Start → Settings → Update & Security) and getting that updated to the latest version.
This sounds like it could be an overheating issue. Try downloading HWmonitor and leave it running in the background while you play. After you experience the issue take screenshots of the info in HWmonitor and post it to an image sharing site (like imgur.com) and then share the links here. Remember you can just include the numbers/letters after the main link like you did for Pastebin.
I checked if there was any update available and my Windows was alredy up to date.
Here are the images of the info of HWmonitor /a/Fxp7o7y .
PD: I delayed the time that takes these drops to appear in game by reassigning the Graphic Card to the GPU instead of the CPU (Because it looks that an update change that setting), and by turning off the in-game hints and the OWL results, now instead of dropping at beggining of the team fight, it starts in half match.
Thanks for that!
Looking at the HWmonitor info, this does appear to be a case of overheating. The Intel i7 5500U is hitting a max temp of 103 Celsius and the Nvidia Geforce 840M is hitting 87 Celsius. So it is very likely that the system is thermal throttling which reduces your performance and can cause the audio stuttering like you describe.
Here’s our article on checking for overheating which has some steps on how to prevent overheating. Since you have a laptop you may want to look into obtaining a cooling pad if the basic steps like blowing out the fans/vents with compressed air doesn’t help get the temperatures down.
I cleaned the vents and the problem seems to be fix, they had some fluzz and they weren’t cooling the laptop causing, as you said, overheating. Thanks a lot for your time and your help
