I have a freesync capable monitor with 165hz. My computer is capable of delivering more or less stable 330fps. With more or less, I mean the following:
If I make the cap to 400, I get ~400 most the time, sometimes drops to ~370.
If I make the cap to 331, I get ~331 most the time, sometimes drops to ~310.
Btw: Any idea why this is? CPU/GPU are at 40%/80%.
What would be the best setting?
Fps cap to 155fps to benefit from freesync, fps cap to 331 to get ~2 frames per hz or fps uncapped to 400? Or maybe something else?
EDIT: I have an AMD GPU, so I can actually use freesync.
Just cap it at 144…Why would you put uneeded stress on the gpu when you have a 165Hz monitor?
You may have a bottleneck BTW.
I would imagine freesync introduces some input lag
There’s a menu you can pull up in the shooting range to see your input lag directly, its like CTRL+SHIFT+A or something, gives a bunch of graphs on screen
Likely because the way that the framerate cap is implemented it by “spinning” (think of it as the CPU just sitting in a loop doing nothing) until a certain amount of time has passed. It’s hard to say without knowing how they did it, but when you hit a spike in the work per frame it can compound on top of some of that spinning for brief periods of time.
When you go above the freesync rate you’re not actually using freesync anymore. You are just refreshing at an uncapped rate with tearing. You probably just dont notice the tearing at 165hz. This used to be different in old days of gsync where they enforced vsync but i believe they’ve long since changed that, and Im not aware of freesync doing anything like that.
So for absolute lowest latency, you would just want it uncapped. My personal recommendation would be to just set it to display-based and keep your hardware running cooler, but I’m biased since i have a room that turns into an oven when i run uncapped.
Why would you want to cap your framerate to something below your monitor’s refresh rate in a game like OW?
cap your fps 20-30fps below your max. if you can indeed achieve 400 then cap at 370. never use freesync in games where lag matters.
ps. you wont gain sr going the one way or the other.
Because, as you mentioned, Freesync works only with lower framerates.
Then set it to 165, not 144
Uhhh.
Doesnt Freesync really only matter if your framerate is consistently below your refresh rate? I thought that was the whole point. To get them to… sync up.
Also…i believe that the higher fps you have the less input lag you get.
Not sure tho.
I read That article so long ago i forgot what they exactly said.
But linus tech tips did a study on input lag and crap. I think Shroud was in it. And some other overwatch league player.

be sure your GPU doesn’t get 100% load
or it will cause frame delay
for me open HWMonitor app before i play OW
if my GPU reached 100% i lower my fps cap by 10 and i keep doing it
you need your GPU to be less 90% load
there is some videos doing test about this on Youtube
they tried it in many games and they measure the mouse latency
all games with no cap have higher fps but also higher mouse delay bc the GPU load
about freesync its good to have it and it will not cause any delay but be sure Vsync in game is OFF also cap your fps below your monitor HZ
i tried it with my self with 1000 frame camera and there is no delay at all and i have 240hz monitor
also never use any app for fps cap never not even in the AMD software dont use them just use the ingame cap
