I have gone through just about every phase imaginable. This roster is relatively small and as a result, I have spent time one tricking the vast majority of heroes. I am a bit iffy on Zarya, Winston, Reinhardt, and Brigitte. Those eras were shorter in duration, happened a long time ago, and I was never particularly good at any of them. I get bored easily of I am not firing a weapon consistently. They are all glorified melee heroes and I ain’t vibe with those.
I decide based on what feels right. The reason is always different. Mauga because he was fresh. Albeit, he was added to my main pool of tanks joining… Hog. Quite the honor. It was not just a fling, I love him. Currently on support I have been and will continue to one trick Kiriko because she is hot. As you can discern, I do not need a particularly compelling reason to give a hero a chance.
The reason why I decide to one trick to begin with is just because I enjoy limiting myself. If I just chose a hero that was the best for a certain situation, I would never get to experience other aspects of Overwatch or learn the heroes in a meaningful capacity. That depth is what I enjoy about the experience.
I used to make a lot of pig jokes about Hog when I was passionate about him. But, I do not really change my “persona.” Not to be that guy, but I hate fake people, so I am not fake myself because I also hate hypocrisy. I do not bother lying on the Internet because there is no point. What you see is what you get and I made pig jokes IRL too. Much better jokes because they wouldn’t get censored.
Kiriko. I play her because I’ve always been a fan of the kunoichi archetype so I liked her design immediately, and she was a support character which is my preferred role. Adopt an online persona though? No. Just a Kiri fan.
I’m not a one trick anymore, but I was for quite a while in OW1, so I hope that gives me enough cred to answer these:
Bastion, because I like miniguns, and I just really connected with Bastion as a character. I too am a killer robot with PTSD and an affinity for nature and birds.
Wasn’t really a conscious decision, I just found Bastion way more fun to play than anything else so I just kept playing him exclusively for a good while.
Not really. I was already similar to Bastion in that I don’t talk much, if at all (though in Bastion’s case it’s because he physically can’t, and in my case it’s just extreme shyness), and I’m a big nature/animal lover.
kiriko and d.va enjoyer here.
B.va was my first hero back in s1 of ow2. I like her kit and spammable voicelines.
kiriko has kunais.
I tend to be more “Owo” when I play d.va if that counts as “online persona”.
I one tricked sym 2.0 initially for 500 hours:
I played her because she was the most fun to me, and my persona was very bitter and jaded because I was witchhunted by other gms in social media groups to keep me out of t500 by throwing my games. I got a lot of threats and was not mentally well in hindsight LMAO. I definitely had an enormous chip on my shoulder at the time. I’d like to think thats past now. I was definitely reported thousands of times, but never suspended. I never broke TOS, but was very passive aggressive.
Now I almost otp zen, and its because I want to learn a hero that scales better with skill, is respected by the community (unlike sym 2.0, because I care too much what other people think of me) and because I watched a jjonak zen compilation back in 2017 and my brain has never truly recovered. I don’t have an online persona or anything with zen, I try to keep to myself these days. I can’t play nice with others 100% of the time and I don’t want to get banned so I avoid coms in comp.
closest thing to a persona i have these days would be streaming moira/zen whilst drunk
sombra since advantages
in low elos all the supports are on dps trips (or are dps mainly just playing support) so you really wont get heals unless you spam. sombra doesnt really need healing. or they are tunnel visioning the tank and ignoring their dps teammates
trolling, i always try and find the opportunity to hack someone at the right time. pharah over a pit, stalk cassidy on the flank KNOWING he is setting up for his ult and then hack … stumblin on a junkrat in the room about to use his ult… putting his hands in his ears but the millisecond after standing there confused
surveying the battlefield in stealth is awesome too, since safe and you can look at the big picture
I’ve never been a full-on one-trick, but I heavily favor Pharah when I’m on DPS. She’s probably the character I am best with. I don’t adopt any persona or anything related to her, I just like being in the sky and I enjoy projectile heroes.
Supports are pretty much a mood thing for me, but Kiriko is what brought me back to Overwatch and got me playing Overwatch 2 at all. I like foxes, she’s fox themed. I also like projectile heroes, she’s projectile. I like vertical mobility, she has wall climb. I despise Ana, she can counter anti. Match made in… Irvine CA, I guess?
I wouldn’t call myself a onetrick, since it is a definition of playing only one hero, however I think that’s applicable for maining a certain hero. Which is Bap for me, as he has no counters, has best damage potential in both support and dps roster. Moreover, still has 3 hp bars, which allows him to basically tank anything in this game. Infinite mobility allows abusing highgrounds with all the damage he has. What else do you need to call it S-tier? The best character to go in “their” backline and get out with 3k or at least highly disrupt their order.
Tracer! She has everything. Good mobility, fun mechanics, and a British accent.
I have the most fun on her, and it’s very rare that Tracer has to swap. She’s viable into everything.
Absolutely. “Cheers” is a part of my vocabulary now. I’m usually very cheerful in game because Tracer just puts me in a good mood.
Also, on one of my alts I’ll act like a World Trigger character for the entire game. That’s a persona that’s only on that account though.
In ow1 i one tricked mei until they added role queue and the infamous 15 minute dps queue times and i literally got a visceral enjoyment out of freezing enemies and lining up that headshot. Ill never forget in a 6v6 elim match where one round my whole team went down and i managed to 1v6 the entire enemy team. I felt like a god. Also her ice wall is the most unique standard ability because its the only one thst actually blocks pathways (this was before lifeweaver).
Nowadays i mostly play sombs but seasons 1-7 i mained lucio and junkrat. Sombs gameflow makes me giddy when im doing good, rat is just dumb fun, and lucio is lucio need i say more i mean comeon.
