I would like to share some feedback and suggestions that could potentially enhance the gameplay experience for Overwatch 2 players.
As a tank player, I have frequently encountered conflicts with other role players, leading to frustration and, at times, multiple reports and subsequent penalties. Tank players often bear the brunt of criticism and blame, resulting in extreme stress and pressure during competitive play. This issue has become so severe that some players are even leaving the game. This highlights the need for a solution to improve team dynamics and reduce internal conflicts.
I believe that adopting a role selection system similar to the early days of League of Legends, where players are not bound to predefined roles and can choose their positions after the queue, might be beneficial. Here’s a detailed outline of the suggestion:
Role Selection Post-Queue:
Allow players to enter the queue without selecting a role in advance.
Once the match is found, players can select their positions sequentially from 1st pick to 5th pick.
Enable role swaps among team members to accommodate flexible strategies and preferences.
Benefits:
Currently, the fixed role system places a heavy burden on tank players since there is only one tank per team, whereas there are two healers and two damage dealers. If the tank underperforms or makes a mistake, they are more likely to receive criticism.
By implementing the new system, other roles would have a greater appreciation for those who take on the tank role, and tank players would feel more valued and fulfilled.
Players can feel more engaged and responsible for covering necessary roles, reducing internal conflicts and “politicking.”
It empowers players who might feel frustrated with tanking roles, as they can challenge others with “If you’re unhappy, you can take over.”
The current system also requires a high level of skill from tank players, creating a significant barrier for new players. This proposed system could lower this barrier, making the game more accessible to newcomers.
Enhanced Competitive Experience:
This system could elevate the value of competitive ranks, motivating players to participate more earnestly, especially since competitive ranks would be unified across roles.
A potential reduction in matchmaking queue times would be an added bonus.
I believe these changes could significantly improve the overall gameplay experience, fostering a more dynamic and cooperative environment. The current system’s tendency to create friction between role players needs to be addressed, and this proposed solution could be a step in the right direction. Thank you for considering this feedback, and I look forward to seeing the continuous improvements in Overwatch 2.
Just as a strong foundation is essential for a sturdy building, tank players are crucial for a balanced team. To attract and retain tank players, we need a system that offers them protection and support, ensuring they feel valued and essential.
@FORTHEHORDE
Composition in open queue is literally broken. Some matches don’t even have a healer.
What I suggested is to unify the rank of the fixed-role comp mode, which means maintaining 1 tank, 2 DPS, and 2 healers.
Do you even play tank?
Given the high levels of stress associated with tanking, I suggest that you try queuing for a different role first. Alternatively, consider playing in a mode where you can queue for all three roles and let the game assign you a position. This will help you learn each role and develop your overall game sense.
What you’re proposing is technically impractical. What makes you think you’ll perform better in a support role? Expecting to switch roles mid-game and having someone else fill the tank position isn’t a viable solution.
Honestly play more games, and build on game sense and strategies.
Not that answer you want to hear but just try to have fun.
I do play all kinds of roles. My rank is Diamond 2 for tank, Diamond 1 for heals, and Diamond 5 for DPS. I’m not the best, but I think I’m pretty decent. What rank are you?
This just sounds like a way to get worse matchmaking than we already get
How do you even match 10 players together in this kind of system? A player may be gm tank whilst plat in support. How do you matchmake for that?
If you opt to put that player in a plat averaged game they can just pick tank and stomp. If you put them in a gm game tank could get stolen from them or they could just choose to play support which they cant play at that level
I feel a change like this would completely break every system in the game
alterantively, we just put dps and tank into the same role, where they get their old passives but it cuts down on dps queue times, it also allows dps to play tank so they can shut up about tank diffs
I understand that my initial post might have been unclear due to its length, so I’d like to clarify the main point: reducing the burden on tank players.
As frequently mentioned in other discussions, the outcome of tank battles heavily influences team fights, forcing tank players to constantly counter-pick based on matchups, similar to a rock-paper-scissors game. This not only diminishes the fun of playing a tank but also leads to significant pressure from teammates. Tank players often get criticized whether they switch picks or not. If they switch but still lose, they are blamed for losing despite having a favorable pick. If they don’t switch, they get just reported frequently.
The purpose of my suggestion is to find a fair way to share this burden among players since the tank role has become highly undesirable.
Perhaps investigating why players are reluctant to play tank roles would make this clearer. If we can’t solve the tank problem, queue times for DPS and healer roles will be worse, and ultimately, players will leave the game, just as they did in Overwatch 1.
There is a down side, with the current system, since the matchmaker knows which role you are picking, it can use the SR role, but here you give that up.
Stop blaming on tank, mercy player.
You are the reason why tanks are leaving.
Do you think it’s normal for picks to be forced just to avoid getting yelled at by teammates? It’s because of attitudes like yours that tank players feel such a heavy burden.
And the players who criticize tank players often don’t consider counter-picking the opposing tank with their own choices, even though they know how crucial tank battles are.
Wow, you are the best tank.
I’m happy that you never been told “tank diff” by 3-10 dps.
So that’s why you feel justified in dismissing the concerns of tank players who post about system issues, by arguing that they are the problem.
