When using lfg it’s very clear that flex is not the same as dps. So if you select the flex role, you have to flex to what the team needs, not instantly lock dps and refuse to switch. Select THE DPS ROLE if you want to play JUST dps. Very simple
Flex = flex to healer or tank if needed
Dps = play just dps
But I can only play Junkrat…
Then select the dps role. not flex haha.
In most LFG groups (I’m at a much lower rank, so it might be different for me, mind you) there’s usually a 2-2-2 with flex replacing DPS
It was a joke. All dps I have seen lately are junkrat onetricks…
All ranks can see all lfg groups, it makes no difference. I know a lot of groups do that but if you are looking to play a healer and stumble across a group with only a flex role available, do you select it and only play healer? What about tank? It makes no sense. Typically you would find another group to have the role that you want to play.
Actually, flex indicates you can swap from dps to something if needed.
For example, DPS to Hog or Zarya (even DVA), or from dps to brig.
It IS a dps role, but it says “Hey, in a situation like GOATS or x3 tank, I can swap.”
Flex is, basically DPS, but if you get someone disconnecting just as you join a game and get a random teammate you can fill.
Also it leaves open the option of something like a GOATs comp.
Mist lfg groups I have seen have 2 flex slots, 2 tanks, 2 healers. So the dps have to take the flex if they want to join. And both probably expect the other to actually do the switching.
Most LFG groups I see have 2 Flex / 2 Tank / 2 Healer role. In these groups the understanding is that flex stands for DPS but can be anything really in case the team decides they want to run GOATS or Slambulance or something like that. (And let’s be honest this isn’t probably going to happen unless you’re in comp.)
Of course, the expectations should be discussed by the leader if that’s what the role is being used for. Otherwise people will just treat it as DPS with a fancy label.
Whenever my 6 stack lfg has a leaver (usually the healer) someone will backfill and instantly pick dps. We then have 3 dps, 1 healer, 2 tanks. I need the dps who are on the flex roles to swap to another healer because the back filled guy who isn’t in our group will never cooperate.
But they selected FLEX. Which means they should flex to what the team needs, not just dps.
Okay, riddle me this, what if the DPS slots are taken? The only way to play DPS in locked roles is to then select flex. You following me? Once I pick flex, I can play DPS in relative peace. Like, the team will probably be complaining that I am not flexing, but hey, that is not really my problem, now is it?
What if the Healer slots are taken? The only way to play healer in locked roles is to then select flex… But we don’t want a 3rd healer… so MAYBE only select FLEX if you are willing to FLEX. Select DPS if you are only going to play DPS. Select Tank if you are only going to play Tank.
Indeed. I agree with all of that jazz. However, the hypothetical I presented came with the caveat that DPS slots were already taken and therefore flex is the only way to do it, bro. It is, like, my only option.
It is also very possible to find another group or make your own.
If we have a 2 flex - 2 healer - 2 tank group where the 2 healer slots and 2 tanks slots are taken, we are left with 2 flex roles. What if 2 people looking for a group to play healer in stumble across this group and decide, “oh flex role, that means I can just play healer!” Then we are left with 4 healers, 2 tanks, because the flex roles are filled with 2 people who only want to play healer. Well then that screws everything up. And what if a group has 2 dps, 2 tank, 2 flex roles? Do you still see those flex roles as dps slots? Then we’d have 4 dps, 2 tanks.
Very simple:
Flex = flex to whatever the team needs (healer, tank, dps)
Dps = exclusively play dps
You could join a different group, use the filter to only show you groups with a damage slot available, or you can accept that damage is more likely than not what they need but be open to swapping if the need arrives, or make your own group.
So many more options than just misrepresenting your intentions to your group.
If you ask me, the team always needs another DPS. They just do not understand what they need. I definitely know better than they do and with that informed decision, I just have to be a bit dishonest before the game starts and enact my master plan once it is too late for them to back-out.
^ that’s bait
yuh huh sure…
Have you noticed that some characters could flex in their own right? For example, I play Soldier: 76. Sure he’s DPS, but he always has a cannister of biotic fluid. That way, if worse comes to worst, he can plop down a cannister, get healed up, and heal anyone who happens to come into the area of effect. In this way, he’s like a mini-healer. How many characters do you know that could play more than one role? Isn’t that the very definition of a flex?
