Just been itching to ask this for a while…
But first let me define what I consider a flex player just to make sure we’re all on the same page.
Flex: an OW player/gamer (whateverdafuq you wanna call it) that can adapt their hero pool according to the map, 5 teammates and enemy composition.
As a flex player, at the release of 2-2-2 I struggled a lot and felt myself very restricted when I saw my team struggle with certain aspects of team fights, where as before 2-2-2 I would be able to switch with that person and sometimes change the game in our favor.
I got so used to switching roles in between games, because I knew I could play tank better in that map/moment. Same with DPS or support (although very rarely bcs I mean, all you have to do is play Moira for an EZ CLAP FREE SR)
I really think we could put a dent in DPS queue times if Blizzard introduced a 4th Q option for Flex players.
Anyways, what do you think? Share your thoughts below!!1!!1!!1

It would bring me back into the game for sure.

I think league’s system of selecting a Primary and Secondary role is what Overwatch needs. You can also just select flex as either of those roles. Without it, flex queue might as well be tank queue.
How would that work with role-based SRs?
the same way it worked prior to ROLQ being implemented.
inb4 people say flexq is queuing for all roles…
that’s not what i mean…
I mean a separate Q which allows you to choose your role prior to being Q’d? I feel like this would help a lot of Solo Q players.
Wouldn’t that just mean DPS players queuing as flex and us ending up with one support and one tank?
The moment you have a ‘flex role’ it just means another DPS role in practice.

We didn’t have role-based SRs before role queue.
This would let me play my gold damage in a diamond tank game, no?
Or do you mean have two different queues: One with role queue and one without?

Well to be clear I mean a flex queue, not a flex spot on teams.
Ah, so comp classic? I’d be up for that.
Or comp classic teams vs 2-2-2?

If you queued as flex, would you be put into the role which is needed? Because then 100% of the time you’d end up as tank.
Or rather, is this a role in which you wouldn’t have class restrictions?
Because I mean it would take some of the weight off of the dps role queue.
And many flex players like you would be able to switch freely.
I would like it too. I’m a Support main but I usually freely switch between heroes until I find the one that works with the specific team and specific map against the specific enemy. (And that I can play too)
But I mean I just want to point out that I suspect very often it’ll end up with three people trying to heal, amp and tank for Ashe, Hanzo and Widowmaker, while all three snipers keep enthusiastically shooting into the unimpressed enemy tanks’ infinite barriers without any effect.
No, I dont think blizzard would do 2 different queues.
don’t miss comp classic, miss the feeling of switching off dps to tank and carrying the game.
don’t think that would work, players would abuse it and it’d be back to what it used to be.
4 dps, 1 tank 1 healer vs 2-2-2.
that’s basically role q now if you’re soloqing and pick all 3 roles.
not exactly, but something like it.
Maybe Blizzard could introduce a Prefered Role option, where you select your main role and it is always present next to your player icon. So that way, if your Prefered Role is to flex between roles, you could swap roles with someone who has queued as a tank but is struggling in a game.
So for example, lets say your queued under Flex right and you select DPS.
You’ve just been queued into Hanamura, its 2-2-2 and your main tank is struggling to get past the choke. You, as a flex player know that you can make a swap to tank, play a different tank hero, have a different strategy, in essence you can change the win condition by making a swap to tank…
A Flex Q would allow players to prompt teammates to swap roles by displaying a pop-up where if both players agree, roles can be swapped.
So if you win the game, your Tank SR goes up, even if you originally were queued as a DPS.
A flex players SR would be determined the same way everyone’s was determined before role queue. The combination of all role SR’s.

Exactly what I was thinking

I mean… If ya wanna flex, queue all 3 roles :PP
That is not what flex is.
What you are describing is filling.

MMmm okay so you don’t know role names.
Flex players have an inaccurate sr by default, since you’ll ALWAYS be better at one role than the others, but you won’t be actively practicing it.
If you had a flex queue, you’d still have a faulty sr. FLEX by queueing all 3 roles and you’ll have a nice fun experience with all 3 roles being it’s respected SR!!
Filling = “Hey other tank, pick first and I’ll pick around you”
Flex = Willing to play multiple roles. Edit: It stands for “flexible” for a reason
Yes, which means if someone is a GM support, platinum DPS and a bronze tank, they could play their GM support heroes in around a platinum game.
There were four. Now there are three.
The four roles WERE Tank, Damage, Support, AND Flex.
Inaccurate. My non role queue sr was at least 500 higher then the other three roles. It is 1000 higher then one of them.
Many peoples strengths do not come from how they play a specific hero or restrictive role, but rather from their ability to use a wider array of tools to turn a disadvantage into an advantage.
Flex players typically are not the best at tank, support, or dps. What they are good at is being better playing MORE roles then others. That is how we get our edge.
Yes, Because DURING the match you are flexible enough to FLEX into another role as needed based on available information DURING a match.
