If 5v5 actually made it so DPS queue times were short then I think it’s quite likely more supports and tanks would want to DPS. Tanking is not fun any more. I don’t really see 5v5 fixing that if they keep all the stupidly high burst damage in the game for OW2 and abilities that are generally used to destroy tanks like sleep, nade and discord.
So what happens if DPS queue times start coming down? What if they get to 2 minutes? Well, I think people in other roles will start queueing DPS. Lots of people I’m sure play tank and support because of the short queue times - they can’t be bothered waiting for 10+ minutes for a game. But if that barrier is removed then there may be a migration to DPS which, of course, will just push the queue times back up and the balance we have now of DPS to support to tank.
There is a limit to the time players will wait, and the queue times will naturally gravitate towards that limit if people prefer to move to the DPS role. If 8 minutes is the maximum players are generally comfortable waiting then I think that’s where the DPS queue time will settle no matter if it’s 5v5 or 6v6.
The whole “sort the queue times” reason for going 5v5 (one of the reasons for the change) is just wishful thinking.
Well fixing the queue times was pretty much something extra, of course a change like this isn’t going to fix queue times.
Their main focus to reduce clutter and change the playstyle is of course their priority meaning that the queue times will become secondary.
I haven’t been that much in the competitive scene recently so i haven’t been the victim of long queue times, though to me it doesn’t feel like it has that much of a priority.
But the point here is to make Tank a bit more attractive, possibly meaning that DPS will switch over to that role… though that would result in higher queue times for tank since that will just be reduced to a single slot.
To fix queue times… well truly it would be the best to go back to OQ, though i’m sure many players would dislike this.
With the introduction of Guilds, we could possibly return OQ as the main mode whilst introducing some way to keep the 1-2-2 structure in games whilst also reducing queue times.
I’m sorry but it’s quite the opposite, 5v5 is most likely a thing because reducing queue times is their main priority. Rn tank queues are holding down the DPS queus due to the disparity in players, halving the tanks needed creates more opportunities for matches and reduces queue times.
Them making tanks a “more desirable role” is a smoke screen for the dps queues
In EU when I flex in QP I get support more than tank. So I don’t really see how it will help queue times as supports are not much more common than tanks, at least here in QP.
Even if they are twice as common, they need to keep getting new people in the support role so queue times don’t go backwards after release. That will be a hard thing to do as tanks are a major part of keeping supports alive and with only 1 of those, and much less likelihood of a shield, I think making supports fun is going to be a challenge.
I mean, people have been saying for a while that support could easily becomes the next bottle neck ND so far they have shown anything to entice people to play support.
Worst case scenario they didn’t think this through enough and they didn’t consider the consequences that this would have in the support role.
I guess DPS will never see their queue significantly lowered.
It’s the most fun role since it has the most offensive tools and self agency. The trade offs are not being the most long lasting characters, but that’s ok if you have tools to escape, or self heal or burst kill someone before you’re dead. It’s the only role that has the most bursty hitscans.
There will be no ‘tanks’ OW2. They will be even beefier DPS brawlers. I reckon “tanking” will be fun in OW2.
Half of the time having a poor tanking experience in OW1 is because your random co tank instalocks hog or Dva and proceeds to feed for the rest of game in radio silence because they won’t join VC.
There are few things worse in OW than getting tank diffed because your co tank refuses to work with you.
In OW2 this problem has been solved. I can have my friends on dps and supp and I know that if I get ‘tank’ diffed its my bad and not because I had to 1v2 every fight.
I agree with everything you said besides tanks not being tanks anymore lol
Tanks are still tanks. They still have by far the largest health pools, best defensive abilities to protect themselves & their teams, best at holding space because of those 2 prior notes etc.
Yeah. I reckon the rework will lean more towards self preservation and play making rather than acting as a guardian for the rest of the team to hide behind though.
That’s how it should be, it’s what makes playing Offlane in dota2 fun because in that game the offlane is often an initiator and dictate the pace of the game.
In overwatch we stand in front of supports waiting for our DPS to find picks, it’s just not rewarding at all. Hope they get their act together in OW2, this shielding crap has to go.
So what happens in OW2 when the singular Tank locks Hog, D.Va, Rein or Winston?
Personally I think Hog will be a beast, but the other three…?
The tank diff will be real and I actually believe the community will get more toxic when there’s only 1 tank to play around.
That player has so much throwing/carry potential it’s not even funny, so I fully expect folks to be losing their minds when the tank locks trash, won’t join VC, and refuses to swap.
The lack of tanks is one of the main reasons DPS queues are unbearable halving the tanks needed and trying to attract a bit more player to the role by making them fat DPS is a solution to this, granted is not the best one but it is a solution.
Also they won’t come out and straight up say that they massacred the tank role for the sake of DPS queues, as obvious as that could be they really don’t want to show that DPS bias.
I don’t disagree, I just disagree on the idea that tanks aren’t tanks in OW2. They might have a more bruiser playstyle because they aren’t getting 90% of their value standing in the way of damage the whole match anymore but they’re still tanks & still “tanky”
Totally agree. I guess some people do… But I do not enjoy being a bullet sponge for my team waiting for my DPS to be useful. I want to be effective besides that & lethal too. I can’t wait to tank in OW2
Sleep? I either get hit with that when I contest the point as Hammond for past 30 seconds or way away from the enemy team. Hardly ever do I see Ana’s jar and discord is even still a thing?
You’re right, I don’t feel like waiting a long queue, so I play tanks to tank.
