Fix matchmaking in comp and QP - Not a hard solution!

People that say that MMR differs very little between ranks are delusional!
You can literally be diamond1 rank but still be top500 MMR, that’s15 ranks below GM1 if you are diamond 1, but you have the same MMR! Good luck ranking up from Diamond on your own!
If it can differ that much between diamond and GM, it will surely be the same the other way, but maybe not as extreme. But you can get a Master MMR player in your gold and platinum lobbies for sure.

What does that mean? It means that you’re personal performance is so good each game that you get a top500 MMR! Why just diamond rank? Because you lose too much games anyway (due to bad teams - which don’t exist apparantly, but you still have top500 MMR in diamond lobbies and don’t win enough games to rank up), so you’re rank is relatively low compared to your MMR!

That is what I literally call a rank within the rank, since the MMR is used to make teams among some other useless algoritms.

Remove the MMR completely in competitive, use only the actual rank Bronze-Champion, and skip that if you are on a losing streak or a winning streak you will get teams with higher percentage on paper to win or lose!

MMR will be used only in QP, and divided in to two pools to lessen the chances of uneven teams. For example: Below 1500 MMR is one pool, and those above 1500 MMR is one pool, that way you will most likely get teams between Bronze 5 to Platinum 1, but those will never meet Masters, GM’s or Champions, and vice versa, because they will be in separate pools.

Will this affect que times? Yes a little in QP since there are 2 pools, instead of 1 big pool, but it lessen the risks of getting completely stomped by Master players if you are bronze-gold.
In competitive? Not so much, top 500 will still have longer que times, and since top500 MMR doesn’t exist anymore, top500 will solely be based on the rank, still only 500 of them, so que times will still be long. For the rest of the players? Nothing changes, if you are platinum 3, you will most likely face players around gold 2 to diamond 4.

But according to some people the que times will be longer? NO! The amount of players that playes the game doesn’t magically diminish because you change the ranking and matchmaking system!

The only thing removing MMR in competitive does, is increasing the chances of even teams.

In QP with the 2 MMR pools, it goes the same way, it will increase the chances of more even games.

This post shows a distinct misunderstanding of how matchmaking works and the purpose of quickplay.

  1. Players tend to team up with their friends more often in quickplay. Meaning that high MMR players will group with low MMR players.

  2. Queue times would indeed sky rocket because the player base is a bell curve. With the majority of players landing in gold. Anyone who isn’t in the same “pool” as gold players will see queue times upwards of 30 minutes for “quickplay”.

You have no numbers for players teaming more often in QP! Secondly: The purpose of QP is defined by the game itself: “Jump into a game against other players of your skill level” - YOUR SKILL LEVEL!
The 2 pool system will better reflect that. There is no definition in-game that QP means shorter que times. And wide-search is still a thing!

Thirdly: No, not the majority - the average player however is around gold in rank! And there are a lot of players who has no rank whatsoever because they never played competitive, just QP or other game modes. Playing QP still awards MMR, and as it is new accounts will have their own pool until they get an MMR, after 14-15 games-isch!
Yes, the que times might get longer for the higher pool, but the matchmaking will be more fair. Or increased chances of more even teams! And the que times will be far shorter than in top500, due to a larger player pool.

Lastly - Bronze-Champion ranks will have no use in QP only MMR, so if you are for example gold rank but diamond MMR, you will be in the higher MMR pool! And vice versa in competitive where only Bronze - Champion will be in use!

Your post however shows distinct misunderstanding in what QP is, and how matchmaking actually works in OW2.
And you don’t know the difference between majority and average.
And you clearly didn’t read through what I wrote!

An extra add: If for some reason we keep both MMR and ranks, make them both visible for everyone in every lobby - So every player can see the variances in both ranks and MMR in the lobby. Still 15 ranks between diamond 1 and GM1, but both on top500 MMR - Says something!

Yoda, We don’t need numbers. It is one of the purposes of quickplay. It allows players of any ranking to team up with their friends in a low stress no stakes environment. If that is only a small percentage? Doesn’t matter.

The purpose of quickplay is not reflected by a single sentence put on its button in a menu.

Anyone who looks at what quickplay allows can clearly see that the purpose of quickplay is multifaceted. It allows people of any rank to team up with each other, it is the place new players and veteran players go to practice and learn the game as a whole, it is zero stakes.

Also, yoda. You can end your sentences in other things besides “!”.

You mean besides the word “quick”?

That is basically the same thing. If the average player is gold then the most people land in gold. The average. The bell curve shrinks the further to each end you get. Even more so the higher up you get. If you cut off the top end of the bell curve then that end will be cut off from the largest part of the player base and will have huge queue times.

That doesn’t change anything accept who is waiting longer. The fact still remains that the top end will be waiting longer.

I know that a huge part of the player base lands in gold and that the majority of players land at plat or below. You have zero understanding of what quickplay does.

An extra side: if you want to avoid higher rank players, play competitive. Pretty simple.

Still the game uses numbers all the time in both QP and competitive!
No, both needs a massive overhaul!

Yes, the sole definition of QP is defined by one single sentence! And it isn’t stated anwhere that the word Quick refers to shorter que times!

Yes, you can end sentences differently, but that doesn’t really matter here, does it?
Or you willing to put in semantics in to this?

No, the words majority and average has completely different meanings, but I thought you knew how language works, since you felt the need to tell me that sentences can end with other than “!”.

And I said that the top end will have to wait longer, you still neglect the fact that you can still be top 500 MMR as diamond 1, the same MMR1 as someone 15 ranks above you. And what that will do in QP! Reading isn’t your strong suit!

No, you won’t automatically avoid higher ranked players in competitive due to the MMR use, once again a diamond 1 can be top500MMR, but still “only " diamond” rank i.e 15 ranks below a GM1, who has the same top500MMR.

Learn to read before you reply, as it is now, you’re neglecting far too much of what I write!
People like you will never understand the numbers, but not really surprised, you think majority and average have the same meaning.
And you still haven’t even mentionened the fact how much MMR can fluctuate between ranks.

Now, go back and read everything through thouroghly, and you will see that my math is far better then what the system is doing now!
And yes I end with “!” to give empasize to something!
But once again, let’s change the subject to semantics instead.

Nope.

Yes you can! You can link whatever you want! Fact is, you can be diamond 1 and have top500MMR, that doesn’t mean it happens often, but it happens often enough!

You can literally every top500 player in the world, and they will say you can be top500MMR as diamond rank!

So, yes!

Nope. Blizzard devs know better than you do.

Is that an arguement against the fact that a diamond can be top500MMR?

No, clearly they don’t since OW2 dev team was the only team in Blizzard that didn’t get a bonus! Why? The game didn’t perform well!

So please define your “Blizzard devs”, because every game has it’s own dev team!

Yes. Gavin Winter (blizz_winter) from blizzard wrote in emogg’s chat that your rank is directly mapped to your mmr.

Heres a tweet from Morgan Maddren, matchmaking dev for overwatch:
https://x.com/SrslyPaladin/status/1757144821066870859

MMR still exists, just your rank will always be an up-to-date reflection of your MMR after every match.

And has anything to do with I wrote originally?
Oh, it has nothing to do with it!
Fact still remains the same! Diamond players with Top500MMR exists!

Yes it has.
You wrote also:

you still have top500 MMR in diamond lobbies and don’t win enough games to rank up), so you’re rank is relatively low compared to your MMR!

Which doesnt happen since everyones rank is directly mapped to their mmr & rank will always be an up-to-date reflection of your MMR after every match.
In other words, there is no visual rank - mmr deviation.
Thus, you cannot have relatively low rank compared to your mmr.

Additionally,

Shows a misunderstanding of how matchmaking works altogether.

If you’d have “top500 mmr” and “diamond rank” you wouldnt be playing in diamond lobbies.

You would be playing in top500 lobbies while showing a diamond rank. Not the other way around.

Just stop typing, you are wrong!
Fact will never change that you can have top500 MMR and still being diamond ranked!
And the dev team knows that! And every top500 players knows that!

And I just explained in the original post why you can have top500MMR and still be “only” diamond rank! And I also said, good luck ranking up from diamond alone with that MMR!

Learn to read, and stop wasting my time!

I’m telling you what the developers have said.
They know better than you do. And they have said rank is directly mapped to mmr now.

You haven’t kept up with how things actually work, which is fine.

You wrote:

Since only mmr is used for matchmaking, if you have top500 mmr, you will be in top500 lobbies.

You are in diamond lobbies if you have a diamond mmr.

Yet there needs to be a solution of some kind that isn’t “too bad your match is going to suck”.

I’ve been diamond/masters most of OW2 and my matches (as support) are absymal with so many poor dps and tank players. Whenever a profile is open, easily 90% of the time I am the highest ranked player on the team, without exaggeration.

This is not fair because I cannot shoot enemies for my dps. And it’s uncountable how many times they die alone or leave me to die alone to dives. Meanwhile if I play dps, I’m not the highest rank but still carrying because… dps excel at killing enemies.

Provide an idea that doesn’t either harm queue times or removes one of the purposes of quickplay and I am game.

Does that change the fact that you will have top500mmr and still “only” be diamond rank?
As I already said: Good luck ranking up from diamond!

Again, you don’t read! Learn to read before you reply!

It’s been very very clearly spelled out to you that you are wrong here. You CANNOT have Top 500 MMR and Diamond rank. If you still think otherwise then I kindly suggest that you learn to read because the developers themselves made statements proving you wrong and grgr has very patiently provided those statements.

I already did! But you still haven’t got the math done!
So don’t reply, because you got nothing to say anyway!

Yes, because that is not a fact. The developers have said so.
They know better than you.

And if you have top500mmr you will be in top 500 lobbies, not in diamond lobbies, like you wrote before.

Thus, you have only so far explained your own confusion about how matchmaking works and not stated any facts.
