I have been playing OW for a couple of months and I suck. After placing with support in gold 4 I felt invincible so decided to try with tank.
I have played about 5 games, my first game was horrifying, then in my second game someone said “plat?” And people said yes. I checked their profiles after and those i could see were plat and diamond. I have since checked after every game and I’m down to gold 1 but I AM NOT A GOLD TANK.
Every single game my whole team is roasting me in the chat and telling me how much I suck and I’m ruining their games but I don’t want to be there!
Overwatch, why would you put a (not good) first competitive game tank in diamond and plat lobbies?! And why is the match making not realising I’m significantly worse than everyone else? I wish they’d de-rank faster in placement to quickly put me in lobbies where I belong.
For now I’m just going to give up trying to rank with tank because it’s not fun to play at all.
At least you are honest with yourself, most of these people in your situation have no clue what to do in the ranks they are in. It really is blizzards fault. However I will leave you with some valuable information about progressing.
Overwatch is a game built around heroes that have abilities that counter others. By simply learning what tank character counters best for the enemy team composition; you will climb… to be honest you don’t even have to be great at the character you play in gold, just counter picking is enough. (Honestly Blizzard should have implemented a list of counters for the characters in-game with all the new players joining)

Also recommend watching at least 1 YouTube video on each tank character
Just keep playing. If you have qualified on one role it puts you at a similar SR with your other roles. However, it very quickly changes your rank. I’d think within 5 games you will be down bottom of silver if you really do suck at tank.
I would hope so but it hasn’t dropped me, my final game was mostly gold 3 from what i could see. It’s lower than diamond for sure, but still way above my skill level.
Just wish there was an emergency button you could press that would immediately de-rank you…
Yeah, it’s not fair on you, you just have to drop a bit more and things will level out for you. Until you get to where you think you should be turn off comms and text. When you think games are fair for you turn them back on. I’ve been there and it is not nice.
The game doesn’t have enough information about you to match you appropriately. Therefore, you are matched in the average rank, that being platinum. If you keep losing, it means you deserve lower and you will drop to your peak rank eventually. Same thing if you deserve higher.
Don’t feel bad about retards, you can’t always avoid them. Just mute every chat and play like nothing is going on if you get tilted.
I assure you in OW2 the average rank is not platinum. At the start new players were placed gold and almost every one sank directly to bronze. This was confirmed by devs in one of their blog posts where they also said they would be starting new players in bronze now.
So why OP is in plat and diamond lobbies I don’t know. The game is dead though, ranked is broken and it’s not getting fixed any time soon. The developers prioritise queue times over balance so even if you do drop down to gold you’ll still see plat and diamond players in your matches.
You are delusional it seems if you think this game is dead.
I get 2 minute queues in Master 1 rank and most of my lobbies are pretty balanced, with a few exceptions. There’s way too much activity in this game to consider it dead.
Not to mention the latest updates are pretty good and they’re addressing most of the issues. They will also be bringing back cool things like on-fire mechanism (Aaron Keller confirmed it on 24th of March).
There’s future for this game and if you get your head out of your a@@ and stop looking only at defeats and bad games, there’s a lot of fun content. Most games you play are nice, but it’s in the nature of humans that defeats hurt a lot more than victories feel good so you ignore those SICK games you have for the shake of a ‘Master Role Challenger’ title you happened to notice on the enemy DPS.
The average player in OW2 is Gold/Plat. Therefore the game will start you at plat. Nothing hard to understand about that. According to the first google searches I did, 32% are in Gold and 25% are in Platinum, that’s the average ranks.

I don’t really agree with this, I have a lot of hours in quick play and I play tank probably 40% of the time, I feel like that should be taken into consideration. They know the ranks of those I’m playing against (if they are ranked) so it would make sense to me for them to place me based on that.
Maybe they don’t use ANY info from quick play, but if they don’t use that for first time competitive players they’re really putting us up against it!
OW1 maybe, yes. But most OW2 players are bronze/silver. Go back and read the dev blog posts again as they mention they were surprised that when they started new players in gold in season 1 they immediately went on a loss streak to bronze, and now start new players in bronze to avoid that. But they do have a habit of lying in those posts too, so who knows maybe you’re right and they do still start new players in gold.
I placed gold 4. I played multiple games this evening by 5-stacking my team where i was outperformed by Bronze 1 tanks so not deserved and no idea why. But that means I’m now perma-stuck in toxic lobbies
