It already happened 2 weeks ago and I didn’t really expect to climb that high, but I finally did it, I hit TOP500 with Roadhog

When I started this season, I tried to play another hero because a lot of negative people false reported me, I tried to play Zarya and it was ok but I did not so well I could climb in GM+.
I played more and more games with Roadhog and I struggled really hard, I was hovering between 3700-3900 most of the time, actually I just wanted to hit GM. When I was 1 win away from my goal I dropped more than 300SR back to 3600 with a 46% winrate, I had no idea what was going on.
I was asking myself “Did I suddenly become worse?” but I climbed back up again, the matchmaking is just garbage.
I climbed higher and higher, when I hit GM after ~35 hours of playtime, I was happy and I played more “relaxed”, I kept climbing and somehow hit Top500 with a 55% winrate.
I dropped down again, at the moment I have 52% winrate and I’m low GM but I don’t care, I’m quite happy with that. I mean it’s not bad for a 30 years old guy I think.
I’m really happy I could reach that dream, I mean it wasn’t really a dream because I was never like “I have to hit Top500! That’s my goal!” I was more like “How cool would it be to hit Top500 one day?”. My real goal was GM and I think that’s where I belong at the moment and I’m fine with that
So yeah thanks for reading guys and girls and good luck on your journey and your goals, sometimes big things happen to you when you don’t really expect them.
Roadhog is such a frigging terror nowdays. When I see a roadhog with a gold gun I groan. They’re absolutely brutal in so many situations, the right click can potentially erase you from existence even from a distance and hook of course is a death sentence. Oh, and you always have to kill hog twice before he actually dies - first time he just backs out thanks to his honeypot.
I guess what I want to say is gratz, and you definitely chose a good hero.
I’m not planning to stream any time soon/at all, maybe I’ll upload some gameplay footage to my yt channel later.
I can give you some tips by replying to GreyFalcons question.
I don’t really deal with Zarya bubbles, there’s no way around. I usually try to pull her into my team, many Zaryas don’t play very careful and get hooked by me.
For example when the match starts, Zarya and Reinhardt often are very close to the attacking team to firestrike and to gain charge % - when I see the Zarya is in hook range I hook her right before her bubble is going down, we kill her and rush the point.
The ult feeding is a big problem, often there’s not much you can do - you are an ult battery, it’s a fact. I try to position myself good. When I can’t hook because CD and can’t deal important damage for example for a kill, I simply hide instead of running around on the open field and wait for a good opportunity.
I think I get the most value from important picks. I don’t just hook anyone, I try to hook important targets. There’s a Hammond in front of me, easy hook, but I wouldn’t be able to kill him. I simply ignore him let him shoot me, keep walking and try to get a hook on the Ana - kill her and their main heal is gone.
When the match starts, most of the time the first thing I do is to flank the enemy backline to get an early pick on a squishy, preferably a healer. Even if I die, their healer is gone and we can push.
When I can’t flank I stick with my team and try to get a nice pick and if that doesn’t work either, well that’s when we lose
Amazing and inspirational to stumble across. They always say how the older you get the worse your reaction times are getting and such, you’re working hard and reducing that decline, that’s pretty cool (I’m 32, and I’ve definitely noticed it for myself).
Just awesome to hear you stuck with a character and got there.
What are some of your thoughts about Hog though?
Do you think the term Ult Battery goes both ways? (Your healer and how much Breather recharges)
What way do you think he’s best suited to be played: an in your face bruiser or with the team enforcer?
Well I’m playing FPS since I was a little child and according to online reaction tests I still have the reaction time of young people (~180-200ms if I remember right).
To a certain degree it goes both ways, but I usually try to heal myself first, except for when the fight is over and we have a few seconds to relax and our healer needs ult charge I let him heal me instead of breather - but my first priority is to NOT feed enemy ult, I will never let me shoot just for my or my healers ult charge.
It really depends on the map and situation, but mostly I play him as a Flanker and Team Enforcer. When you play too aggressive you can get melted in 1 second, not joking.
His ult is pretty bad and often a death sentence if you’re not careful. Usually I ult to secure 1-2 kills or to try to save my team while being in Graviton - sometimes I use my ult to push the enemies away to capture the point.
Very impressive! You mentioned that you dropped 300SR at one point. That must have been brutal psychologically. How do you handle a string of losses? Eg, do you take a break after a few consecutive losses or do you keep playing? Thanks.
