Playing the October patch, I enjoyed playing some pre rework heroes, and not having to play against some post rework heroes… Maybe you can even name some small changes that heavily gimped the fun of some characters, like Genji’s wall climb ““bug fix””.
Imo almost every hero was more fun before their reworks, though just to name my personal favorites; Bastion & Orisa.
I’m particularly saddened by losing Bastion, cause he was my favourite hero to play in the whole game, and the rework turned him into one of my least favourite heroes to play. I don’t like having sentry mode on a cool down, or being able to move during it, or only being able to use it for 6 seconds each time. I definitely don’t like the stupid, annoying, useless, boring, unimaginative, piece of artillery “ultimate” they replaced tank mode with. The grenade… it’s okay I guess, it can be mildly fun sometimes, but it’s pretty clearly just tacked on randomly and it doesn’t feel like a “natural” part of Bastion’s kit. Also playing without self-repair until you get the perk to unlock it just feels terrible.
With Orisa my feelings are a bit more mellow. I do still enjoy playing her now, but she is radically different from what she used to be, and I definitely preferred her back in OW1. She was my favourite tank, and 2nd favourite hero overall back then, but now, I think she’s only kind of fun sometimes, as opposed to being very fun the vast majority of the time. I just prefer the bigger focus she used to have on protecting people with the shield and bodyblocking in fortify, and working with your team and setting up combos with halt and supercharger. I do like the javelin and think it looks cool, and terminator horse moments can be pretty funny, but…man, it’s just not the same Orisa that I fell in love with all those years ago, y’know :/
Honestly, I have no idea why they felt they needed to change his ult too, cannon jumping was so much fun
Personally, I think most reworks have been good. Orisa went from the most boring hero imo to an actual fun tank to play. Would much rather play against ow2 orisa than barrier bot ow1. I enjoy bastion more in ow2 as well. Never played him much in ow1, but disliked how he forced his entire team to have to play around him and be some cheese comp to get value. Otherwise guy is just always dead and can’t set up. And when a team is playing around him, it was boring cheese barrier stacking with insane bastion dmg. My gripe with his rework is why they felt the need to change his ult. Maybe with his new kit they felt his ult would be too good, since he has one of if not the worst ults in the game now. Can certainly argue they are less unique, but I think they are more enjoyable and better for the game now.
I find sombra to be more fun in ow2, probably because her gun is so good compared to ow1. But she is and always has been a hated hero.
I don’t really find those heroes more fun to play, I find them way less fun to play against, except bastion. Sombra used to be way worse in that aspect but is not so bad after all the changes.
By and large, Torb. He’s always been a favorite as I enjoy engineers in games, but they really dumbed him down to be rather generic over time. My favorite version was the one just before the big rework, where you auto-genned scrap so you didn’t have to throw your meatball shape critbox into the wide open to collect some. Level 3 turret and Molten Core (which turned into Overload) were iconic (dead Torb ult POTGs anyone?). I think the rework is just… substantially more boring. Overload is an ability about as creative as Regen Burst (without the level 3 turret perk), throwing the turret and not upgrading it makes it feel so expendable, and the lava pool Molten Core is too feast or famine.
Perks have definitely brought a bit of the old Torb magic back. I never really stopped playing him, but I do play him a lot more now. Also becuase they fixed that horrible sound effect whenever you ulted in yesterday’s patch
sym was an improvement
mercy was a massive improvement
brig was an improvement
torb was an improvement
hog was an improvement
hanzo was an improvement
mei was an improvement
if youre asking why i think theyre all improvements…generally speaking they got rid of stuff that just wasnt working (brig/sym/hog) or added more skill (torb/mei) or removed something that was just god awful (mass rez/scatter arrow)
doom - indifferent…i dont really get why they moved him…but i dont think hes any better or worse
orisa…dont miss the shield…but i liked orb…meh
sombra has been all over the place - i liked her initial reworks…but hate the “stealth assassin” changes
anybody else i dont really look at as have been changed dramatically
in terms of fun, ive never not had fun playing a hero
It’s all opinion and preference.
I disagree with all the other ones, but-
I definitely agree with that. I’ve actually played her more after the rework than I did prior to it, but the whole assassin thing just feels so “un-Sombra-like” to me that I still think it was a mistake to take her in that direction (and an obvious mistake at that).
That’s nice. With the exception of Bastion, I haven’t ever found a hero to be outright unenjoyable to play as either, but I do think all the reworks did make the heroes significantly less fun than they used to be, but it’s all pretty subjective at the end of the day
i did forget bastion
id say his old ult was 1000 times better…but the stationary turret was cheeks
also indifferent
sure
Mainly don’t like the turret changes if we’re talking about her latest iteration
sure
never much of a mercy players but I did see some mercy players say they prefer old GA and what not
I kinda hate how they just kept making his doritos stronger… ow2 s5 was it, was not very fun because of it.
I find hog substantially less fun after the rework. Old right click was so much and the risk reward on him is insane. They made him safer to play but brought down his highs and got rid of some skill expression.
Is this referring to scatter arrow? sure
Mainly indifferent but I know other mei players loved freeze to death.
I will die on this hill. Tankfist is way less fun and way more annoying to play against. too much aoe and sometimes just feels unkillable.
people tend to enjoy the thing that makes everybody else suffer…whether its because its OP or super annoying
not when i play him…lol
edit - maybe its because i play the nonRQ less hp version of him…cause i often wish i had more HP
Orisa’s pull and b*ngo (this word is banned) were fun she’s boring as hell now
Sym. I know her multiple reworks made her a better character on paper but a mediocre character thats mediocre to play isn’t as good as a trash character who’s fun to play. I miss her noodle beam and the shield she threw out. I also hate that they took a character that didn’t have to aim and made her one of the more aim intensive characters in the game. Her reworks feel like they were made with complete disregard for symmetra’s player base. The sym we have now seems like she was meant for a completely different demographic than old sym. If they HAD TO rework her, I think they should’ve leaned into her being a shield support. Short range glass cannon, essentially the opposite of zen. As a dps she does nothing another dps can’t do better, provides the most situational utility in the game, and had the most fun aspects of her kit removed. She just doesn’t feel like her own character anymore. Now if I want to make a Pharah die by her own ult, Sigma is the one with sym’s old shield. If you want to not aim much and harass people who also can’t aim but are playing characters that require it, dps moira. If you want to shield your team and not aim, brig. If you want any aspect of syms old kit your best bet isn’t sym, its usually someone else. If you like new sym more than old sym, I don’t know why you wouldn’t be playing Zarya instead. Shields, beam that increases in damage, character people hate playing against, the only thing she can’t do is teleport. If you want to teleport, flank, and do high damage, play reaper or Sombra. If you want to make a microwave and bully a genji who keeps missing your massive head hitbox, its just not very fun anymore. You can do it I guess but since you have to actually focus on aiming you can’t point and laugh the whole time. You can make tiny death rooms but its not the same as a whole carwash. I still play sym sometimes, I still love her, but objectively other characters are just better choices to do what she used to. Sym isn’t one of my favorites anymore because other characters have the fun of her kit. Sigma has her shield and hitting people with a rock has the same effect as a carwash (the enemy dies really quickly if they don’t have help and its funny). Ramattra and brig can damage through shields though only close range. If you want old support sym I’d say play brig or moira and if you want old dps sym, play tank. A lot of tanks have a more similar feel to old sym than sym herself. Sym has her moments where she’s fun now but it can’t just be any moment like it used to be and I could complain about it all day.
Now for the satisfaction of old annoying sym, I play bap and say “I recommend not dying” every time I kill someone. Bap has a lot of potential to be extremely annoying and I think he’s underused for that. He’s unkillable, does great damage and heals, isn’t hard countered by anything, and has voice lines to maximize enemy tilt. If you’re looking for a hero to be annoying with its not Sombra. Its bap. Highly recommend
Aside from sym I feel like bastion is probably in a similar situation where objectively its fine but he just isn’t the same
It would be easier to list the characters that became more fun after adjustments…
So, yeah, that’s the list.
Some of the OW1 hero reworks were good, but I think essentially every OW2 rework and most of the new heroes post-OW2 are extremely poorly designed.
Symmetra
Short version: She can no longer pick up objects and Player Corpses with her weapon and wiggle them around.
Plus it was nice to litter the area with Turrets making Flanks extremely difficult.
Lastly, the numerous buggy interactions she had (Ghost Turrets, Turret Climbing and out of bounds traversal)
Putting turrets on a basketball and punching it around
Brig maybe? I didn’t play her very much before her reworks though so idk
Everything after 2020 was a mistake
