Fan made skins VS. Blizzard "skins"

This should put a bug in someone’s ear and see how bad the designer are at making skins in game, the fan made skins are 10 times, no what i’m saying, 100 times better than what blizzard is giving us for 6 years, trust me the transition from f2p will be even worse with cheaper skins and in hurry made skins due to the delay between patches.

Blizzard should hire the people who can make skins better than them, here is some example :

Don’t tell me we gonna get better in overwatch 2, that’s just delusional and i’m gonna prove it.
During the trailer of overwatch 2, we have seen couple of skins and this is what we gonna get :

A washed up (literally) skins with barely details on them : https://www.lacremedugaming.fr/wp-content/uploads/creme-gaming/2022/06/blancs-729x410.png

Even a crossover between their own IP licence is non existent in this game, like everyone does that but them for some obscure reason.

I’m not gonna do them all but you got the point, anyway blizzard, i hate to say it but your skins need a revamp, a re-designer idk, they’re all washed up. Hire someone who knows their job.

Half of these skins look like League of Legend skins, the other half look like the style we already have.

I agree with the robin hood skin that it look ugly and uninspired, but the space corsair Cassidy is pretty cool.

Clown sombra is litteral trolling from Bliz tho

Hell most Overwatch heroes have better skins in HotS than they do in the actual game they’re from.

Oh joy.

Muting Qwaser threads is becoming a full time job. Honestly we should be getting paid.

In the interest of civility I will add that unless you know the process of creating a skin over simply designing a skin than you really have no idea what you are talking about.

I’m a somewhat successful digital artist with a massive following on Patreon and twitter and I can assure you that designing a skin on paper and actually converting it into a working 3D skin is not the easy task you think it is.

You are falsely equating two different topics, again, and I believe at this point you only seek to sow discord here.

Fairly certain those are epic skins, so they’re pretty good for that.

  1. Most of the skins in Overwatch are not from Blizzard but from external companies that work on behalf of them. The company with the largest share is Airborn Studios from Berlin. (They make skins for different games. Just have a look at their Artstation page)

  2. If you just take skins from fans you have legal problems. On the one hand copyright by the artists and possibly licensing rights with other companies.

  3. Are there technical limitations that limit creativity. A skin must look reasonably good in every setting of the game and must not affect performance (polycount, texture resolution, level of detail.)

There are quite a few skins I don’t like in Overwatch and OW2 (mostly because of the hair and helmet) and I really like a lot of these fanarts. However, it ultimately comes down to personal taste. For example, I don’t like the OW2 widow skin at all because of the visor and her hair. But that’s not why I approach the artists and ask for their replacements. Yes, they could have done better, yes they could be more creative, but you shouldn’t ask for layoffs with something like that.

I’d like to see those artists turning a 2d drawing into a 3d model. Oh wait, most of them can’t.

Ive seen that “meme”, it’s actually hilarious.

And you’re talking about 1 skin every 9 weeks and for the price of 45$ that means they’re so rare we wont get anything similar beside that, they’re not even looking good especially the genji one.

Thanks mister obvious, i’m not talking about whats legal here, i’m talking about the quality and how far they couldve gone to make a skin, instead theyre choosing not to.

You said, and I quote, “Don’t tell me we gonna get better in overwatch 2, that’s just delusional”. That is what I’m talking about.

Don’t be moving them goalposts now, Qwaser. That’s totally unlike you

Also just to do some fact checking:

  1. The price of the mythic skins has not been confirmed.
  2. We do not know the rarity of that Mercy skin.
  3. Those skins are objectively awesome (Yes I’m kidding about it being objective, but I think those skins are great and I’m sure plenty of others do too)

So blizzard can make this skin live but not the other fan made ive showed? hahaha
Oh yeah especially with their new modern engine x2

We already know all that, they have asked on a survey, it’s crystal clear

Just to do some more fact checking:

  1. The survey was not an official confirmation of any prices. It was a survey.
  2. The survey included a range of prices, including $15, $30 and $45 for a mythic skin.
  3. The Mercy skin’s rarity was not a detail that was included in the survey by my knowledge.

Out of everything to complain ab in ow, the art is the weirdest one to choose. Why can’t you just say the fan made art looks good and leave it at that?

It’s a free game,
who is gonna finance all of this mess?
No sell = skyrocketing prices
Repeat.
I’m expecting them to sell the “mythic” skin for 50$ or even more, valorant is good example for this.
But i don’t really care, they look terrible anyway

Because blizzard don’t know how to make skins and dare sell them now

You’re free to speculate all you like in your own time, but that’s not what I’m talking about :v:

The one thing to note is that usually the translation from concept art to in-game (2D to 3D) isn’t always a positive experience. Plenty of animated films given live action should always tell people what a weird shock it is go see.

I really don’t consider these skins to be any better or worse than OW’s concept artists.

OW has had plenty of good skins when you actually compare concept art to concept art rather than having a sense in your head of 3D vs Concept Art.

The Concept Art has its own unique style while the 3D is fairly stylized among all the cast. Some things are lost in translation just as any of the concept art done here would be.

This is actually a good point, I wish they did more skins like the starcraft rein and wow genji skin. There are large gaps of time between them and they come at a premium price on top of the fomo.

I also wish they would reach out to other companies for collabs like epic does for fortnite. The emotes are also kinda lacking there’s only 1 or 2 dance emotes for every hero and none of them play any audio besides the sigma maestro emote.

So? What’s your point here, 2D to 3D things are lost in transition, so? You can basically transform everything but you need to be talented for that, fortnite and other game do it perfectly.

You are toting about hiring concept artists and not referenced any concept art itself in this from blizzard. Largely only 3d works. Need to compare apples to apples here. None of the art designs to 2d or 3d are bad. Nor are your concept art picks any better than what blizz has done.

Let me tell that you have a very bad taste, no wonder blizzard choosing only bad skins.

They can at least do a community skin competition (with incentive for artists) and have the players vote on favorite design.

Also that Lilith Moira skin looks insanely good.
