So I’ve seen a lot of people recently talking about being false reported or the reporting system in general and wanted to share a related experience and my thoughts in general…because well toxicity is (imo) the BIGGEST drawback to this game
First of all let me just say that false reporting DOES happen…it’s a product of the internet age (and hardly unique to overwatch) where people know that they’re anonymous and it’s a tangible harm that they can inflict on another person(s) with little repercusions …a lot of it is selfishness or projection of anger unto others because things are not going how YOU want them to:
- “you didn’t pick a character I like” (sym hate for example even though it’s explicitly stated that this isn’t reportable)
- “you didn’t help me” (even though they were on other side of map and you never said anything)
- “we lost because of person X (never yourself)”
- “you aren’t good”
a lot of it is just trolling which is sad behavior honestly but worth mentioning…
But a lot of it is actually warranted reporting and that’s what I wanted to talk about here: perhaps you’re actually toxic and don’t realize it
I have a friend who I play with on occasion…i don’t know them personally…I don’t know which of my other friends invited him but he’s a permanent fixture in our TS channel (yes we still use TS)…he’s perfectly fine on TS…we all get along fine…but he usually just plays competitive which I don’t like so I barely play with him…in recent weeks some of my other friends have wanted to try comp so I reluctantly joined them
And then the nature of the beast is exposed…
The SECOND that the character select screen appears he is TALKING…and I don’t mean pertinent conversation…completely off the cuff deliberately poking people and/or being annoying on purpose type…has an opinion on everyone’s voice (and he himself has a thousand different voices in game apparently), their character selection, ask everyone for opinions about random stuff that’s happened in/outside of game…if someone asks him to change characters he’ll specifically point out how well he’s doing and/or turn the conversation around to how they should change and accuses them of being toxic…has an overly obnoxious (on purpose) laugh that he uses strictly to show everyone how much “fun” he is having when things aren’t going well…and on and on…all of this mind you in “good fun” if you ask him…he’s just having “fun” with people…
He’s fantastic player btw…easily the best out of all my friends and is also a great shot caller in game…but the amount of times I’ve verbally asked why he felt the need to say something and pointed out how it helped start the toxic behavior from others (as all of the above inevitably leads to others becoming toxic themselves) is A LOT
2 days ago I logged on to TS and he was the only person on and he told me about the hilarious thing happened to him…he got a notification that he was being avoided as a teammate by many people…I specifically said “careful, don’t be surprised if many of those people are reporting you as well”…he laughed it off saying he wasn’t worried…people know he’s just being silly
well later that day he was actually silenced in game (can’t use chat or comms)…and according to him he doesn’t understand why…literally doesn’t get it…furthermore while he can still play the game he says it wouldn’t be any fun to play like that…the game isn’t worth playing if he can’t do all of the above apparently…this all happened coincidently as apex dropped (which he is now playing) so I actually wonder if he’ll be coming back…but I know that if he does that he’s just going to start right back up and that I probably won’t be playing with him because well I never liked comp to begin with and he just makes it worse
So I share this story because I know everyone knows someone who they consider to be toxic…and to pose the question to all the people that have been “falsely reported”…was it unwarranted or is there a chance that perhaps you are partaking in behavior that others might not find agreeable? How much of what you do/say in game is REALLY necessary?
