False reporting vs warranted reporting (maybe you are toxic?)

So I’ve seen a lot of people recently talking about being false reported or the reporting system in general and wanted to share a related experience and my thoughts in general…because well toxicity is (imo) the BIGGEST drawback to this game

First of all let me just say that false reporting DOES happen…it’s a product of the internet age (and hardly unique to overwatch) where people know that they’re anonymous and it’s a tangible harm that they can inflict on another person(s) with little repercusions …a lot of it is selfishness or projection of anger unto others because things are not going how YOU want them to:

  • “you didn’t pick a character I like” (sym hate for example even though it’s explicitly stated that this isn’t reportable)
  • “you didn’t help me” (even though they were on other side of map and you never said anything)
  • “we lost because of person X (never yourself)”
  • “you aren’t good”

a lot of it is just trolling which is sad behavior honestly but worth mentioning…

But a lot of it is actually warranted reporting and that’s what I wanted to talk about here: perhaps you’re actually toxic and don’t realize it

I have a friend who I play with on occasion…i don’t know them personally…I don’t know which of my other friends invited him but he’s a permanent fixture in our TS channel (yes we still use TS)…he’s perfectly fine on TS…we all get along fine…but he usually just plays competitive which I don’t like so I barely play with him…in recent weeks some of my other friends have wanted to try comp so I reluctantly joined them

And then the nature of the beast is exposed…

The SECOND that the character select screen appears he is TALKING…and I don’t mean pertinent conversation…completely off the cuff deliberately poking people and/or being annoying on purpose type…has an opinion on everyone’s voice (and he himself has a thousand different voices in game apparently), their character selection, ask everyone for opinions about random stuff that’s happened in/outside of game…if someone asks him to change characters he’ll specifically point out how well he’s doing and/or turn the conversation around to how they should change and accuses them of being toxic…has an overly obnoxious (on purpose) laugh that he uses strictly to show everyone how much “fun” he is having when things aren’t going well…and on and on…all of this mind you in “good fun” if you ask him…he’s just having “fun” with people…

He’s fantastic player btw…easily the best out of all my friends and is also a great shot caller in game…but the amount of times I’ve verbally asked why he felt the need to say something and pointed out how it helped start the toxic behavior from others (as all of the above inevitably leads to others becoming toxic themselves) is A LOT

2 days ago I logged on to TS and he was the only person on and he told me about the hilarious thing happened to him…he got a notification that he was being avoided as a teammate by many people…I specifically said “careful, don’t be surprised if many of those people are reporting you as well”…he laughed it off saying he wasn’t worried…people know he’s just being silly

well later that day he was actually silenced in game (can’t use chat or comms)…and according to him he doesn’t understand why…literally doesn’t get it…furthermore while he can still play the game he says it wouldn’t be any fun to play like that…the game isn’t worth playing if he can’t do all of the above apparently…this all happened coincidently as apex dropped (which he is now playing) so I actually wonder if he’ll be coming back…but I know that if he does that he’s just going to start right back up and that I probably won’t be playing with him because well I never liked comp to begin with and he just makes it worse

So I share this story because I know everyone knows someone who they consider to be toxic…and to pose the question to all the people that have been “falsely reported”…was it unwarranted or is there a chance that perhaps you are partaking in behavior that others might not find agreeable? How much of what you do/say in game is REALLY necessary?

Here is a realistic scenario for you.

I am a player. I enter a match. I see you. I did not like how you made a joke in chat. Reported for abusive chat.

I am a player. I enter a match. I see you. You won the match and dominated Reported for abusive chat.

I am a player. I enter a match. I see you. You criticized me Reported for abusive chat.

I am a player. I enter a match. I see you. Reported for abusive chat.

Why? Because why not? There is no drawback to false reporting. You could false report everyone every match and , imo, seems to have zero repercussions.

Their idea of letting the community just simply report only ended up giving everyone a weapon to be abused to no end. They hope we will do their job for them and customer support never has to ever look into anything.

While what you say is technically true…I would also say that it’s very easy (extremely) to not do or be any of the things you just mentioned and/or just highly unlikely

I guarantee you that the vast majority of people who are playing the game in a respectful manner and are behaving themselves like good teammates are not being falsely reported…

If you’re getting reported chances you are doing SOMETHING…I’m asking those people to do some introspection and see if they can figure out what it could be…and you’re right it could’ve been nothing

False reporting does happen…but there’s just as much if not more warranted reporting

If you have ever seen a topic on one tricking you would see how big a problem is false reporting.
Anybody who clicks on the report option can clearly see what is NOT a reportable offense and yet the forums are full of people saying that one-tricking, playing poorly, not switching, not joining the chat, playing well, playing certain heroes deserve to be reported despite the clear evidence that its not a reportable offense.

Let me tell you something about human history.

Whenever you put in place a system that ultimately causes fear in the long run, it only serves as a means of a system that is used to silence people in general, even the good ones.

Eventually, nobody speaks. Nobody talks. Nobody criticizes, nobody jokes, nobody. Nobody.

Just a dead chat that is rarely used while everyone is too afraid to talk. Those who brave it, run a risk.

Welcome to a passive aggressive, lazy, and controlling way of getting around a problem. Sure, you hurt the toxic players… but to what end?

Meanwhile me and a bunch of other guys have to combat the stupid masses on the warframe forums who try to get us a simple to use ingame report system similar to this and they dont understand why we are against it.

Because allowing everyone to have the power to report is good on paper, but is abused to death by everyone and anyone who plays victim.

This is why its not a good report system. There are no limits to it.

Meh I acknowledge it’s drawbacks…Purpose of post was to address the people that are rightfully being punished for something and don’t realize why…you make it sound like the system is only ever abused

But I also don’t think it’s as rampant as you say…

In this thread

“False reporting IS a thing, but lol maybe it’s your fault?”

Yeah, thanks mate, that was helpful.

Nope…false reporting is a thing…but maybe you weren’t falsely reported

You ever read one on of those “I was falsely reported” posts on here and immediately think “dude, even your complaint post is worthy or reporting”…cause I’ve read plenty

Imho, I think anyone heavily ‘reporting’, or providing a large number of reports, should be heavily investigated by customer support themselves.

Or at least their reports flagged in some reason as ‘low priority’.

I been playing since release an have probably made no more than 20 reports in nearly 3 years

I have played this game regularly for a long time, and sometimes I get quite tilted in chat. I have YET to recieve even ONE notification saying I’ve been avoided or reported. Never been silenced.

Yet (and i know this isn’t good), I have been toxic about 10% of my games, even just a sentence or two it counts.

So all these people that are saying “I did nothing and got banned OH NO!”

Total bulldung, how can you people be getting reported enough to warrant action yet I have never even ONCE recieved a negative notification from blizzard after I have actually been toxic in game, and admit it.

If you have recieved a warning or a silence there is 0.000005% chance youre innocent. The majority of these people getting silenced or warnings are definitely being toxic, or whatever, and are either not intelligent enough to understand that, or straight up lying.

It’s almost like the addict that doesn’t realize they’re an addict? Yes that’s who this was directed at…my friend from the story and another post on here I saw this morning is why I wrote this up

A: “I’ve been false reported and I havent done anything!”
B: “Are you SURE?”
A: “How dare you question me you scum?! Im never fecking toxic and youre mother is actually a dog and you’re bronze so shuddup! Blizz please look at my ban cos its false xoxo”

I’ll take that over toxicity.

Since when do we have to be so careful that nobody feels attacked? Things weren’t so bad back then. I wouldn’t report anyone if I knew no one was reporting me either. Players report for ridiculous things, you can’t make a joke or a sarcastic remark anymore. The report system should be completely removed.
From a financial point of view, it wasn’t so smart to declare casuals and whiny players as a target audience.
These players leave immediately when a new game is released.
Now the player base is shrinking and the game is designed for players who are not even here anymore.

So you should be able to just do and say whatever you like even if people take offense to it on here?

Exactly. As soon as it is relevant for prosecution it has to go to the police. Just like real life. How often does this actually occur in the game?

Often apparently…we are talking about getting reported after all…

What exactly is the system you would like to see…

Sometime I get reported in the heroes screen. Because I pick Bastion on attack.
