…said nobody, ever. (except maybe after losing because the Widowmaker on their team was a trash can.)
So why exactly are we nerfing her?
I get that people think hook needs a longer cooldown. It enables her to elude her counters. I don’t agree with it, but I can understand the argument behind it. What I don’t understand, is why anyone is even remotely nerfing this hero that is already so god damn hard to play and win with.
Why are we making that even harder?

Because this meta favors her for once and no one wants to be deleted from every fight in the match.
I don’t think she needed the nerfs either but because her counters are nowhere near viable enough she’s been left uncheck, and it isn’t really fun for anyone besides the widow getting the picks. It was necessary.
Maybe in the future if we get some of the dive heroes back they may revert it.

Why doesn’t she need a nerf?

Because she’s already really hard to win with, and nerfs are only going to make this harder?

But she wins a lot of games in diamond/masters/GM by herself. So clearly she isn’t really that hard to win with.
She needs to be able to be caught by her counters. That is why the hook is getting nerfed.

You literally explained why people wanted her nerfed.

If a person thinks the problem with Widow is that she has too much mobility they are completely beyond hope.

Okay. She has an A in Dance, but cumulatively speaking she is still failing.
That is to say, statistically speaking, across the board she has a 50.33% win rate. She’s barely above average. Sure she could use a nerf to get that .33% to dead 50%, but there are many heroes (even at master and grand Master) who have a way larger advantage than her 0.33%, and those heroes aren’t even being looked at.

It’s fine tbh. I been playing Widow since release. The new 10 second cooldown is still better than the 12 it was when they buffed it.
The nerf that does annoy me is the primary fire nerf. I used to tap fire after a scope shot using primary fire to finish of a target that was almost dead. The first shot was always dead on with the SMG, and it’s generally useful to already be moving again after you just fired a giant kill me laser pointing at you.
It’s a very :S change, and more meaningful than people give it credit for.
The reason why they are doing it is simple, that’s simply how Blizzard operates. See seasonal changes in Diablo 3 for an example, or in WoW. Things get shaken up periodically as Blizzard wants to shift the meta to whatever they deem would be interesting for the next shift. Then they will shift it again later. Their idea of what “balance” means is constantly shifting. That, and everyone has their own idea of what “balance” means, so they don’t really even try.

I don’t think the hook will change much I’m not mad about it, and I don’t think it’s going to ruin my life anymore than when hook already misses (it will make getting back to points after being murdered take slightly longer), but it’s nothing major. I just do find it annoying that this already difficult to play hero is becoming even remotely harder.
The rifle range falloff worries me too. It makes sense because I do think it should be consistent. It’s just a machine gun (although technically bullets wouldn’t slow this hard irl) but it’s fairly normal for overwatch. I do wonder how many more low HP kills are going to escape though…
Also this nerf further isolates her skill tiers. Players who already nail every headshot (professional players who already play exceptionally well) are going to see very little from this, while the rest of us who already struggle to hit them are only going to be further hurt by this. This seems like the exact opposite of what Widowmaker needed to balance her across all skill ranks.

As long as they don’t touch anything else about her I’m okay. This game is going more and more away from aim skill and that makes me sad because it’s still an FPS. We still need heroes that can do well but completely rely on aim. And I know people will say “it’s not your average FPS” but it still is one and by removing aim skill we might as well make this a board game.

I don’t really want to see Widow nerfs, but as a broader topic I believe that if a hero is too far above the power curve then they should be nerfed. I don’t think it matters much if it requires a lot of skill to reach that level of performance. Either it is balanced or it isn’t.

Imo, widow is pretty balanced she kinda requires some tweaks tho (from a widow main)

This. Lower skill players get very butt hurt when they don’t adapt and keep getting popped.

A hero that can just play their own game is a problem. If dive can reach her effectively, the enemy team suddenly has a way to deal with her.
Having a hitscan one-shot is bad enough, but being able to constantly run away made her impossible to actually interact with without a Widow of your own.
Why am I talking about interaction rather than skill? That is what makes direct competition interesting. If I just wanted to see who had better aim, I’d watch someone in a virtual target range or skeet shoot. I want to see how people outplay their opponent in comps, strategy, and positioning. Nothing bores me as much as just watching a Widow pop off and win a fight based on pure aim. Watching a team trying to get a McCree in range to do the same thing, while the other team tries to shut it down, is cool though.

dive heroes used to be able to counter her by forcing her to change positions. this was why her hook got buffed in the first place, so she can elude the dive heroes. with dive heroes not being used as much as they used to (cause of the introduction of brig) widow doesn’t need to change positions as often
The hook nerf couldn’t have come at a worse time. Dive is coming back. Hammond wrecks her. It’s going to be a nightmare trying to play her.
Plus the falloff buff for other heroes make her an easier target to kill while scoped. Her hook still has bugs that haven’t been addressed for years now either.
Winston and DVa can dive you twice before you get your hook back once. Plus Hammond too it’s complete bs she’s being directly nerfed when all these other changes happening around her nerf her anyways.
Now we’ll never be able to escape being attacked.

If clicking the head is so hard. Why do so many people do it?
