Event Loot Boxes

Dear Blizzard,

Please be so kind and answer my honest question.
Why the … do you make the lootboxes drop already known loot 90% of the time?
Honestly… why?

It’s the worst when there is a special event, like winter wonderland now…
I log in every week, do all my best to get lootboxes and maybe… win a skin that I like, but costs 3000 (later about that). Instead what do I get? Already known, not event related grey and blue loots from 90% of the lootboxes. For 5 credit.

This is more than infuriating.

In the first place, I would think that if you have an event, the focus should be on the loots related to that event… but no, random unrelated items drop from the christmas lootbox. What is the difference between a regular and a christmas lootbox then?
Second: the prices. 3000 is too much for a skin. It is. There are usually 3-4-5 to buy in every event, which can add up to 15k credit if you intend to buy them all…
Gaining 15k by 5 credit (for already known blues and greys) is a hell of a job. If not impossible.

All in all, i’m fed up with the lootbox mechanism. I play the events to get the special items obtainable from the event, not for shifty 5 credit / duplicate.

Fix it, pretty please.
First fix: event lootboxes should drop event related items mostly.
Second fix: only drop duplicates when all obtainable loot is acquired from the event.

Event items outside of challenges are always available. You get a chance during the event itself or the anniversary. Or wait a year to get them again when they cost only 1k.

Simply put once you collect all available items of a given rarity in the current loot box distribution, you start earning duplicates. Epics and Legendaries do not appear in every single loot box even if you collected all possible Commons and Rares. Here are the full rules.

  1. The rate of rarity distribution for Loot Boxes (during no seasonal event) are a minimum 3 Common (White) and 1 Rare (Blue) item, then approximately 1-out-of-5 loot boxes will replace one item with at least one Epic (Purple) item, and 1-out-13 loot boxes will replace one item with one Legendary (Gold) item. It is possible to get more than one Epic or Legendary in any given loot box but it is extremely rare.
  2. During a Seasonal Event, seasonal marked items will appear more frequently with a minimum of one seasonal item appearing in any Loot Box and the odds of getting Seasonal Epic and Legendary items are improved from that of standard loot box items.
  3. On occasion, a Rare, Epic, or Legendary item will be replaced with Gold Currency. Gold Currency can be used to purchase any items (except Player Icons) from the Standard Loot Box distribution and any items that is currently available in an active Seasonal Event. You will get 50 Gold for Rare drops, 150 Gold for Epic Drops and 500 Gold for Legendary Drops.
  4. Loot Box contents are determined at the time the Loot Box is earned or paid for and not when the Loot Box is opened. The contents takes into account of the player’s current inventory for all items in the standard loot box distribution and seperately for any seasonal event in progress, but only issues items based on the rarity distribution. You cannot hoard loot boxes to earn new items for upcoming content releases such as a new hero.
  5. If a player collect all possible Standard Distribution loot box items at a certain rarity or all items of a Seasonal Event currently in progress, they will start to earn duplicates again. Here are a few possible scenarios:
  • If a player has collected all possible standard Commons from the Standard Loot Box distribution and there is no seasonal event running, they will start to earn duplicates again for any Common items issued. The Loot Box does not instantly provide any higher rank items by default nor will it issue any seasonal items when no seasonal event is running.
  • If a player has collected all possible standard Commons from the Standard Loot Box distribution but there is a seasonal event running and they have not collected all possible commons from that seasonal distribution, they will not start to earn duplicates again for any Common items but any Common Items will be seasonal items until all possible Seasonal Common items for that Seasonal Event are earned.
  • If a player has not yet collected all possible standard Commons from the Standard Loot Box distribution but has collected all possible Seasonal Commons from a seasonal event that is currently in progress, then they may start seeing duplicates on occasion. This is because a Seasonal Loot Box must contain at least one item from that Seasonal event which is not affected by rarity distribution.
  1. If a player unlocks an item with gold currency before opening any unopened Loot Boxes, they may receive duplicates to the item they just unlocked.
  2. A Golden Loot Box is guaranteed to contain at least one Legendary item, however it is not restricted otherwise. There are no current promotions for Golden Loot Boxes at this time. An Anniversary Event Legendary Loot Box will contain one Anniversary Event item based on your current inventory but it may not be that Legendary Item. If you purchase the 50 Loot Box pack with the bonus Anniversary Legendary loot box, the items in that Legendary Loot Box will be determined NOT accounting for the 50 other Loot Boxes (and the 50 boxes will not account for the Legendary Loot Box either). This makes it possible where the guaranteed Legendary Item is a duplicate!
  3. Anniversary Event Loot Boxes now pool from all current existing event loot box distribution and the standard loot box distribution. Please note, the Overwatch Anniversary Event is NOT running at this time. At least one Anniversary Event item will appear in each Anniversary Loot Box. For the three remaining slots any seasonal event drop or standard item drop will be selected PRIOR to rarity and item selection. Because of this, if you have collected all possible items of any rarity of any event or the standard Loot Box Distribution, there is a chance to earn duplicates. This chance will increase the more complete your collection of loot box items are even if you do not have all possible items for any rarity of any event (or standard loot box distribution).

as long as you own all base white/blue lootbox items you are guaranteed white/blue event items (you get 1 guaranteed event item anyway). if you own all of the base and event white/blue items then you will get duplicate white/blues.
“easiest” way of only getting event epics/legendaries is to collect all base epics and legendaries which will happen eventually

Thank you for putting this here, now I have an insight on what is happening.
Although i’m not completely happy with it.
If I understood correctly, normally the chance for a gold skin to drop is low…
And the more items I unlock via lootboxes of any kind, this chance gets lower.

I think that this is not really good for us “skin hoarders”…
Maybe there’d be a better chance if the rules had some flexibility for special events…
Or maybe a chance to “trade” items in the lootbox.
If I get a duplicate, I could choose another item of the same level which I don’t know yet. That would be good. Or something to imporove the droprates of exciting skins during an event.

Thanks for the info.
